65. The Unbearable Wait
“Wow, this nightgown is so pretty! I want one!”
“This one’s nice too—looks a bit sexier though.”
“Ms. Qin Qing sure knows how to design; her latest works are as eye-catching as ever.”
A group of girls excitedly discussed Qin Qing’s newest line of nightgowns. But as they chatted, Round Face couldn’t shake a sense of familiarity about the model in the magazine. It wasn’t the clothes, but the model herself. She looked… oddly recognizable, as if Round Face had seen her somewhere before.
It wasn’t just Round Face; the other girls also felt a strange sense of déjà vu but couldn’t quite place it.
“Doesn’t this model look a lot like Ling Ning…?”
At this comment, the room went silent. The girls turned to look at Ling Ning, who was sound asleep at her desk, then back to the magazine. Yes, the resemblance was undeniable.
“No way! There has to be a mistake—it couldn’t be Ling Ning!” Round Face refused to accept it, frantically searching the magazine for any clue that would prove otherwise. But the more she looked, the more it seemed like a slightly more mature version of Ling Ning.
Just then, Ling Ning stirred, waking up to take a sip of water before settling back down to sleep. One of the girls, unable to hold back her curiosity, rushed over to her with the magazine in hand.
“Ling Ning! Is this… you?”
Startled, Ling Ning looked at the girl. She vaguely recognized her as a classmate but didn’t know her name.
“Mm-hmm, it’s me,” she replied, glancing at the magazine. The photo was from the shoot at Qin Qing’s place the previous Sunday. Looking at her own picture, she thought to herself that she actually looked quite pretty.
With Ling Ning’s confirmation, the girl’s excitement skyrocketed, and soon a crowd of girls gathered around, bombarding her with questions. Round Face, meanwhile, found herself standing alone.
“B-but… the magazine… it’s mine…” Round Face mumbled, her protest going unheard as the others flocked to Ling Ning.
She thought to herself bitterly, Forget it. There’s no point in trying to tarnish Ling Ning’s image now—not when she has everyone’s attention.
Li Qian observed the scene with interest. She hadn’t expected Ling Ning to actually be a model, and she felt relieved she hadn’t tried to spread rumors without evidence. Otherwise, she would have been the one embarrassed.
In her past life, Ling Ye might have enjoyed the attention of being surrounded by a group of girls. But now, Ling Ning just wanted to sleep. Surrounded by a crowd, she found herself unable to nap, though she was too polite to ask them to leave. She answered their questions absentmindedly, hoping the next class would start soon so she could get some rest.
“Ling Ning, is it true you go to high-end apartments often?”
“Yes, I work there.”
“How much did that dress cost? It’s so pretty—I want one too!”
“Oh, that was a gift from Qin Qing. I don’t know the price, but you can search for ‘Qin Qing’ on Taobao if you want; there are lots of lovely clothes by her.” Ling Ning even threw in a bit of advertising for Qin Qing.
“Your skin is so nice! How do you keep it that way?”
“No idea, honestly~”
“We heard you have a daughter who’s almost in middle school—is that true?”
“She’s starting sixth grade this year, so she’ll be in middle school next year…” Ling Ning replied, half-jokingly. The girls all laughed, assuming she was joking; after all, a high school senior with a sixth-grade daughter seemed absurd.

“Ring ring ring~”
With the bell signaling the start of the next class, the girls finally left Ling Ning’s side. She sighed in relief, grateful for a few moments of peace. How would she ever get any sleep between classes now?
Just as she was settling back down for a nap, Xu Qing leaned over and whispered, “How come I didn’t know you were a model?”
“Well, you never asked,” Ling Ning replied, scratching her nose with a sheepish smile.
“So, you must have some skill in picking out clothes, then?” Xu Qing teased.
“Just a bit,” Ling Ning answered humbly.
Truthfully, Qin Qing had taught her a lot about fashion—how to pick, match, and style outfits. Her current fashion sense far surpassed that of her past self, Ling Ye, but she hadn’t really noticed the change.
“Then come shopping with me this Sunday!” Xu Qing suggested with a bright smile.
“This Sunday? I have plans. How about next weekend?” Ling Ning remembered she’d scheduled a house tour with Zhou Xiaoxiao for that day.
“Alright, next Sunday it is. It’s a date!” Xu Qing beamed.
Luckily, this class was Ye Xuan’s; otherwise, their whispered conversation might have gotten them both kicked out, or even sent to the office for a stern talking-to.
But as soon as class ended, Ling Ning found herself surrounded once again. Somehow, word had spread to other classes, and even some boys had joined the crowd.
Li Qian watched with envy as more and more students gathered around Ling Ning. She wanted that kind of attention too. Yet now, everyone was gravitating toward Ling Ning, even the boys who usually tried to chat with Li Qian. She felt completely overlooked.
Meanwhile, Ling Ning was growing desperate. She’d needed the restroom since last period and had planned to dash there as soon as class ended. But her classmates’ speed in swarming her had thwarted her escape.
It’s fine—I can hold it through one more class, she reassured herself.
As the lesson began, however, she quickly realized her mistake. Holding it in was harder than she’d thought. Clenching her legs together, she checked the time on her phone, noting that she was only halfway through the period.
“What’s wrong?” Xu Qing asked, noticing her discomfort.
“N-nothing,” Ling Ning stammered, trying to keep her expression neutral.
“Are you sure?”
Ling Ning shook her head, insisting she was fine.
“Alright, but if something’s up, tell me, okay?” Xu Qing said with concern before turning back to the lesson.
Please let class end soon… Ling Ning thought, staring longingly at her phone.
When the bell finally rang, she bolted out of the room before anyone could stop her. Luckily, the restroom wasn’t far. Just one more step, and—
“Whew~~~~”
