68. Sorry, You’re a Good Person
Ever since Ling Ning’s identity as a model was revealed, she’d been receiving a steady flow of love letters in her desk drawer.
As she held the latest batch of letters, she felt a wave of nausea. The grammar was atrocious, the language was overly flowery, and the letters were riddled with typos. Who taught these people to write? She felt like she was reading the nonsense written by some tentacled sea creature.
Just as she pondered how to deal with the letters, a classmate called out to her.
“Ling Ning, someone’s here to see you.”
“Huh?” Ling Ning thought for a moment. She didn’t have many friends at school—who could it be? Tossing the letters into the trash, she walked to the classroom door, where a tall, handsome boy was waiting, staring at her dreamily. His intense gaze made her uncomfortable.
“Um… do you need something from me?”
“I just wanted to say, I’ve liked you for a long time. Please go out with me!” The boy looked nervous, a faint sheen of sweat on his forehead.
If someone confessed to you out of the blue, how would you feel? And what if the confession came from a boy?
Ling Ning looked at him blankly. She didn’t even know his name, yet here he was, confessing. She never imagined she’d one day be on the receiving end of a confession from a boy. The experience left her with mixed feelings.
She looked up at the tall boy. From what the girls in class had said, he was on the school basketball team and was quite popular with other girls. But Ling Ning wasn’t an ordinary girl—and she had a particular dislike for people who flaunted their good looks.
“Sorry, you’re a good person, but I think we should focus on our studies,” she replied.
She’d heard this line countless times in her previous life—though always directed at her. Saying it herself felt incredibly satisfying. After delivering the line, she turned gracefully and headed back into the classroom, leaving the boy standing there in a daze.
Back in class, Ling Ning found Xu Qing and Xia You watching her with concerned expressions. As she sat down, Xu Qing gave her a sympathetic look. “Ling Ning, it’s still too early for romance. With senior year, you should focus on studying. There’ll be plenty of time for relationships later, right?”
“Yes, exactly! You don’t want to get misled by sweet-talking boys; they’re often full of empty words,” Xia You chimed in, agreeing with Xu Qing for once.
Ling Ning chuckled, shaking her head. “Don’t worry—I have no interest in dating right now. Besides, I’m not into boys.”
The real reason was that dating cost money, and she’d rather avoid any unnecessary expenses. Ling Ning clearly hadn’t shaken off her old perspective as Ling Ling just yet.
“Not… into boys?” Both girls’ eyes lit up with a mischievous glint, convinced they hadn’t misheard.
Ling Ning had no idea what trouble she’d just started for herself.

“Agh, this is so annoying!” Ling Ning groaned, slumping over her desk. Just when the love letters from the girls had quieted down, it was now the boys’ turn.
As the academic rep, she often had boys coming over under the pretense of asking for study help, only to linger and chat. Since they were using “studying” as their excuse, she had no real way to dismiss them. It was bad enough with the boys in her own class, but now boys from neighboring classes—and even a few from middle school—had started showing up. She was at her wit’s end.
Finally, after school, Ling Ning strolled out with a group of girls. Since she’d shared some tips on fashion and skincare with them, someone would invite her out for a nice meal nearly every day. Life was good!
Of course, she had also turned down many offers from boys. Not only would it be awkward, but she’d hate to risk any “unwanted surprises” in her food.
After a pleasant meal, Ling Ning walked leisurely back to school, but as she passed a narrow alleyway, she heard some suspicious noises.
Curious, she crept over and peeked around the corner.
She saw a group of rowdy kids with brightly dyed hair surrounding a scrawny boy. She recognized the group as some troublemakers from her school.
“Hey, Li Si! Your brother Zhang San’s locked up now and won’t be out for a few months. No one’s around to protect you anymore, so hand over the protection money and we’ll be on our way. If not… don’t blame us for getting rough!” the green-haired leader sneered.
“Li Si?” The name rang a bell, but she couldn’t quite place it.
Li Si stood silently, staring down at the green-haired bully with an expression that seemed to say he couldn’t care less.
“So you’re not gonna pay up? Alright, but don’t make a sound once we start.”
Just as they were about to strike, a clear voice called from outside the alley, “Officer, it’s them!”
Hearing the word “police,” the gang instantly panicked. The leader bolted down the other end of the alley without even waiting for his underlings, who scattered in all directions.
“Ah, a brain is such a wonderful thing… too bad not everyone has one,” Ling Ning muttered, watching them flee with a smirk. She turned to Li Si and asked, “You alright?”
“Y-yeah, I’m fine,” Li Si stammered, staring at her in awe, momentarily forgetting to thank her.
“Don’t go into deserted areas. Stick to crowded places—they won’t bother you there. Just wait it out until your brother’s released…” she said, yawning as she walked away, heading back to school to nap.
Li Si watched her retreating figure, lost in thought.

I really want to see Your Name, but… no cute girl to go with me. Should I just go in cosplay instead?
