67. Ling Ning’s Flavor
“Ye Ye, time to get up! Did you forget? School starts today!”
Ling Ning sighed as she shook her daughter awake. Since it was Ling Ye’s first day back, she’d gotten up early to prepare. Knowing her daughter’s habit of sleeping in, she’d figured it was better to be proactive to avoid being late.
“Mmm…”
Ling Ye slowly opened her eyes, her face filled with dread. Why did breaks always have to end so suddenly? She hadn’t even finished all the study material she’d planned to review!
“Alright, get up, wash up, and have breakfast. You don’t want to be late on the first day, do you?”
“Mom, dress me~”
“You’re big enough to dress yourself!” Ling Ning protested, though she soon relented, helping her daughter get changed.
“Mom, you’re the best~” Ling Ye beamed, giving her mom a quick peck on the cheek before hopping off to the bathroom to brush her teeth.
Ling Ning wiped the bit of drool left on her cheek, then set breakfast on the table.
“Eat up, and I’ll brush your hair afterward,” she said, sitting down to comb her daughter’s hair as Ling Ye ate. As she worked, she couldn’t help but nag, reminding her daughter to be careful on the way, to get along with her classmates, and to listen to her teachers. For the first time, she felt like she finally understood her own mother’s worries back when she’d started school.
Ling Ye nodded absentmindedly, a warm feeling bubbling up in her heart. Though her mom’s reminders were repetitive, they were also comforting—a sign of her love and care.
“Did you pack your pencil case? And if you see any strangers on the way, keep your distance! And if anyone offers you candy, absolutely don’t accept it!”
“Mom, I know! If anything happens, I’ll call you,” Ling Ye replied, rolling her eyes before skipping out the door.
“I’ll pick you up after school!” Ling Ning called after her.
“Got it~”
Finally outside, Ling Ye breathed a sigh of relief. Since when had her mom become so chatty? She’d been talking non-stop since breakfast!
As she walked to school, Ling Ye pondered what she could do since her mom’s strict rules had kept her from studying much over the break. Watching videos in school felt risky, so she’d probably have to wait until the weekends to catch up on those.
“Ye Ye! Over here!” Qin Sirou waved, making sure Ling Ye saw her.
Ling Ye looked at her friend and suddenly thought, “If I can’t study, why not put my knowledge to practical use?” After all, there were plenty of cute girls in school; it couldn’t hurt to have a bit of fun.
Seeing the slightly mischievous smile on her friend’s face, Qin Sirou felt a little uneasy, as if something unexpected might happen.

After the busy morning, Ling Ning barely made it to school on time. She’d skipped breakfast to avoid being late, but by the end of first period, her stomach was rumbling.
During the break, she slumped over her desk, clutching her stomach, feeling as if she’d been hollowed out. To make matters worse, a classmate nearby was noisily devouring a huge drumstick, and the smell wafted over to her, amplifying her hunger.
“What’s wrong?” Xia You asked, concerned. She wondered if Ling Ning was feeling unwell, recalling that she often ignored dietary restrictions at the wrong times.
“I’m starving…” Ling Ning replied weakly.
“Didn’t you eat breakfast?”
“I didn’t have time. I almost missed class,” she sighed.
Xia You thought for a moment, then rummaged through her bag, pulling out a chocolate bar. “I bought this as a snack and forgot about it. It’s yours if you want it.”
“Thanks!” Ling Ning took the chocolate eagerly, unwrapped it, and devoured it in no time, savoring the rich taste. She gave Xia You a pleading look—it was hardly enough to fill her stomach.
“I’ll… I’ll see if I have more.” Xia You’s cheeks flushed slightly as she fished around in her bag, pulling out a pack of cookies and handing it to Ling Ning.
She watched as Ling Ning munched on the cookies, finding her adorable even as she ate. An idea popped into Xia You’s head, and she quietly took out another chocolate bar, unwrapped it, and held it up to Ling Ning’s mouth.
Without thinking, Ling Ning took a bite, chewing happily as she finished the chocolate. She noticed a bit of chocolate smudged on Xia You’s fingers and, without a second thought, took her friend’s hand and gently licked the chocolate off her fingers, making sure not to waste a drop.
Xia You froze, feeling the soft, warm touch of Ling Ning’s tongue on her fingers. Her cheeks turned bright red, and she sat there, speechless, as Ling Ning focused on finishing her cookies.
“All clean now!” Ling Ning declared, satisfied, before turning back to her snack.
Staring at her glistening fingers, Xia You glanced around to make sure no one was watching. She then raised her fingers to her own lips, savoring the lingering warmth.
“Ling Ning’s flavor~” she murmured, her gaze dreamy and unfocused.
After polishing off the snacks, Ling Ning patted her stomach, feeling like herself again. Noticing Xia You still biting her fingers, she raised an eyebrow.
“Xia You, don’t bite your fingers—it’s unsanitary.”
The sound of Ling Ning’s voice snapped Xia You back to reality, and she quickly lowered her hand, her face turning an even deeper shade of red as she stammered, “I-it’s nothing.”
“Thanks for the snacks! Without you, I might’ve starved today,” Ling Ning smiled.
“N-no problem…” Xia You replied, relieved that Ling Ning hadn’t noticed anything strange.
