78. “Eating Dates Pills”
“Um, Mom, aren’t you going to ask about what happened this afternoon?”
Ling Ye looked curiously at her mother. Ever since they’d left school, she’d been waiting for her mom to bring up the incident, but even after dinner, her mom hadn’t mentioned it.
“You said it was just horsing around, right? As your mom, it’s only natural that I trust my daughter,” Ling Ning replied, as if it was the most obvious thing in the world.
“Mom…”
Ling Ye felt touched and threw herself into her mother’s arms. In this materialistic world, only her mother’s embrace felt truly warm.
Ling Ning smiled gently and patted Ling Ye’s soft hair. They stayed like that for a while in a quiet, comforting hug.
After some time, Ling Ning suddenly said, “Oh, Ye Ye! Isn’t Sirou coming over tomorrow? Have you prepared anything to entertain her?”
“Huh?!” Ling Ye froze for a moment, then looked up at her mother as she remembered that Qin Sirou was indeed coming over. It was the first time she’d invited a friend to her house, and she’d never dared to do so at their old, cramped apartment.
“When someone visits, you should have something to treat them with, right?”
Ling Ye gave her mom a pleading look. She had no idea what to prepare to entertain a friend.
Knowing her daughter wouldn’t have thought about this, Ling Ning stood up and pulled a large bag out of the storage cabinet. Smiling, she said, “Mom’s already got you covered. It’s filled with snacks. Just take a few out to share with her. There’s also soda and orange juice in the fridge, along with some ice cream, but don’t overdo it!”
“Oh, and I downloaded a bunch of movies and anime on the computer. If you two get bored, you can watch them. And as for lunch, I’ll come home and cook for you.”
“I knew you were the best, Mom!” Ling Ye cheered, throwing her arms around her mom’s neck and planting a kiss on her cheek before her gaze drifted over to the large bag on the table.
Shaking her head, Ling Ning chuckled and pulled out a package of “Eating Dates Pills” from the bag, handing it to her daughter. “You can only have one pack, alright?”
“Yay! Long live Mom!”
Ling Ye opened the “Eating Dates Pills” and started munching on them, savoring the flavor. Wait a minute… Eating Dates Pills? Ling Ning snatched the package back, reading it carefully before trying one herself. It turned out to just be a date-flavored candy, after all. She’d thought it was something else!
Ling Ning glanced back at her daughter, who was now giving her a sad, puppy-eyed look as if saying, “Mom, don’t you love me anymore?”
“Um…” Flustered, Ling Ning handed the “Eating Dates Pills” back to her daughter, whose face immediately lit up. Then she playfully took it back, causing Ling Ye’s face to fall again. They went back and forth like this a few times.
“Oh, stop teasing!” Ling Ning finally relented, laughing at her daughter’s ever-changing expressions. She hadn’t realized how fun her daughter could be to tease.
Ling Ning, still caught up in their little game, didn’t notice the frustrated expression building on her daughter’s face. When she couldn’t take it anymore, Ling Ye suddenly lunged forward.
“I’m gonna bite!”
“Aaahhhhh!”

“Ugh, I wonder if Ye Ye will be able to host her friend alright. Why isn’t school over yet?” Ling Ning sighed, leaning on her desk as the teacher’s lecture droned on in the background. She wasn’t paying attention.
“What’s wrong?” Xu Qing asked, noticing her friend’s distracted expression.
“Oh, it’s nothing… Ye Ye invited a friend over, so I need to head home to cook after school,” Ling Ning explained.
“Oh? Perfect! I don’t feel like staying for Mr. Xiao Ming’s class either. How about we skip the last period together?” Xu Qing suggested with a mischievous smile.
“Skip… class?!” Ling Ning was shocked. Could the straight-A student Xu Qing really be suggesting this?
“Of course! It’s only Mr. Xiao Ming’s class,” Xu Qing replied, explaining that she just couldn’t keep up with the math material.
“But… but…” Ling Ning stammered, torn between amusement and disbelief, but Xu Qing interrupted her.
“Don’t worry about it; just follow my lead. Between periods, I’ll do your makeup to make you look pale and sickly—I’ve got makeup in my bag!”
For context, Mr. Xiao Ming was Ling Ning’s math teacher. His last name was Xiao, and his first name was Ming—yes, the infamous “Little Ming” known for his nonsensical math problems. He was notorious for his odd questions that left students stumped, and Ling Ning had fallen for his trick questions more than once.
During the last period, Xu Qing gave Ling Ning a quick nod before suddenly standing up and announcing, “Teacher, Ling Ning isn’t feeling well. I’d like to take her to the nurse’s office.”
Mr. Xiao Ming looked over, noticing Ling Ning’s pale complexion and pained expression. After glancing between the two girls, he nodded in approval.
After getting permission, Xu Qing led the “sickly” Ling Ning out of the classroom. Once they reached the stairwell, Ling Ning’s pained expression instantly transformed into a sly grin.
She realized the makeup trick was surprisingly effective. Without it, she might not have been able to fool the teacher so easily.
Though they’d made it out of the classroom, they couldn’t just stroll out the main gate. Not only was there a security guard, but if they bumped into any teachers, they’d be in trouble.
So, the two of them snuck through the cafeteria to a delivery entrance and slipped out the back. From there, they looped around to the nearby market to buy ingredients for lunch before heading back to Ling Ning’s apartment complex.
In gratitude for Xu Qing’s help, Ling Ning invited her over for lunch as well, which Xu Qing eagerly accepted. She’d been craving Ling Ning’s cooking ever since trying it once over the summer.
Though Xu Qing already knew Ling Ning had moved, this was her first time visiting the new apartment, and she was impressed by how much nicer it was compared to the old place.
When Ling Ning opened the door, they saw several little girls sitting around the computer, absorbed in something. The moment they heard the door open, Ling Ye quickly hit Alt+F4 to close the window.
One of the girls gasped in surprise when she saw Xu Qing. “S-sis… sister?!”
