Halloween 1988 (Harry 8 years old)

Chamber of secrets, Ritual room.

Harry stood in front of the completed ritual circle, this circle is a lot smaller than the one he used to perform enhancement rituals and more importantly at the centre of the circle there is a gleaming ruby.

Now after months of preparation they are finally ready to destroy Voldemort's Horcruxes.

The reason why it is so difficult to destroy a Horcrux has more to do with the inherent nature of a soul rather than magical protection. All magical protections are powered by magic and so they can be only broken by even more powerful magic.

Take the indestructible charm, the charm forms a magical shield around any object it has been cast on, this shield protects the object from all physical harm and can only be broken by magic. A glass ball with a basic indestructible charm can only be physically destroyed by extreme means like throwing it in a star or point-blank nuclear explosion but a wizard easily destroy such objects by using a more powerful spell or by removing the charm.

It's a good thing that these protective charms wear out with time and without any proper maintenance or muggles would have found all kinds of indestructible things in old wizard ruins.

All magical defences like protective charms, shielding spells, defensive wards, etc more or less work the same way, these defences can only be broken with even more powerful magic than the defensive magic on the object or magic that can bypass those defences entirely.

A Horcrux is a physical object that is imbued with a piece of soul, and it is impossible for a wizard to destroy or even harm someone else's soul by any means, it is extremely difficult for a wizard to even harm their own soul that's why creating a Horcrux requires extreme measures.

Since we can't harm the piece of soul tied to the Horcrux we also can't damage the physical vessel without taking extreme measures. The only person who can remove the piece of soul without completely destroying the physical vessel is the person who made the Horcrux since he is the only one who can interact with his soul.

However, Slytherin's portrait found a way to avoid this problem entirely, you see magical artefacts only function when they are complete and whole, you can't remove the rubies from the sword of Gryffindor or the jewel from the diadem, these are not just shiny stones that are slapped on to make the artefacts look good, they are a part of the magical artefact.

Voldemort intentionally made priceless magical artefacts as his Horcruxes because these objects have to be destroyed completely for him to die and even if lost these objects the person who finds them won't just try to destroy these treasures.

But he made a mistake by making the gaunt ring into one of his Horcrux, the ring is not a single magical artefact but two, the entire ring is one artefact and the stone by itself is another artefact. That's why the binding of the piece of soul to the resurrection stone is a lot weaker than the other Horcruxes.

Using this the portrait modified an old soul trapping ritual to help destroy the Horcruxes. Seeing that everything is ready Harry started the ritual.

Harry summoned the ring a little above the ruby at the centre of the ritual circle, after that a drop of basilisk venom slowly floated on top of the ring. At the right time, Harry let the drop of venom fall on top of the ring, like being doused with acid the ring started to melt and rot in front of him.

While the stone remained unaffected the ring surrounding it was gradually eroded away, before the ring got completely destroyed Harry activated the ritual circle underneath.

The entire circle glowed with golden light for a movement before turning to dust, with that the ruby at the centre started to glow with a red light and it started to suck in something coming out of the remains of the ring.

Harry couldn't see the piece of soul that is being sucked into the ruby as this was not his soul but he could see the dark mist like threads that connected the piece of soul to the stone.

Harry summoned the sword of Gryffindor that has already been doused with basilisk venom, he used the sword that magically appeared in his hands to cut these dark threads connected to the stone. After he was done the ruby sucked the piece of soul inside itself and an intricate pattern of golden lines appeared on the ruby for a moment before disappearing.

With that the ritual was over, now the piece of soul that was inside the ring is trapped inside the ruby, while Harry still had to destroy the ring to complete this ritual but with this ruby, he can destroy the other Horcruxes without destroying the physical vessels.

A soul naturally wants to be whole, that's why Harry's scar would hurt every time he was near Voldemort, that was the piece of soul trying to get out of his head and return to Voldemort.

Harry picked up the ruby and took it to the sealed box that housed the diadem, as soon as he got near the box it started to rattle like the diadem was trying to break out of it.

Harry opened the box but kept the diadem sealed inside it, the ruby once again started to glow as if it was sucking in something from the diadem, Harry could once again see the dark threads but this time there were many times more threads connected to the diadem and they were also a lot stronger.

Harry once again used the sword to tear these bindings apart and the ruby in his hand sucked the piece of soul in the diadem.

After the ruby sealed one more piece of Voldemort's soul inside it Harry took a sigh of relief. All of their efforts for the past few months finally paid off and more importantly, he now has a way to destroy all of Voldemort's Horcruxes at the same time with the help of this gem.
