Chapter 108: Chapter 108: If This Isn’t Love
"What are we going to do? The Helicarriers are already airborne, and I can't stop them!" Sharon Carter was frantically typing on the keyboard, beads of sweat forming on her forehead.
"Let them take off. It's fine," Thor replied calmly. "Even if things get out of hand, I'll bring them down myself."
"Finally?" Sharon paused, glancing at him. "Do you actually have a plan?"
"Of course. You think I came here just to save you?"
"Well… yes," she said, shooting him a look. "Considering all the people chasing after me…"
Onboard the Helicarrier, Falcon inserted the final chip and activated his communicator. "All set!" he announced.
Underground, surrounded by a wall of computer screens, Maria Hill instantly seized control of the Helicarriers from HYDRA. She swiftly redirected the carriers' targeting systems so that they locked onto each other instead of the designated targets.
"Wait a second," Thor said, appearing behind her and pulling out a USB drive. "This is Dr. Zola's HYDRA list. Since the Helicarriers are about to be destroyed, we might as well make use of them first."
Hill nodded and stepped aside, letting Thor upload the data. There was no point in arguing.
Moments later, the Helicarriers' weapon systems roared to life, their missiles and bullets raining down on unsuspecting HYDRA operatives around the world. As Thor watched the screen, he noticed a blank spot on the map where no targets appeared—Sokovia. It seemed shielded from the carriers' detection.
In S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters, Alexander Pierce raised his champagne glass, grinning maniacally. "You can't stop me now! Project Insight is active, and soon, HYDRA will rule the world!"
But his victory was short-lived. A bullet shattered the window and pierced Pierce's chest. His smile froze as he looked down in shock.
"The villain always dies from talking too much," Natasha remarked coolly. "Though, to be fair, you wouldn't have escaped either way."
Nick Fury looked down at Pierce, lying motionless on the floor, and sighed. "Thor cracked Dr. Zola's database. He got the entire HYDRA list."
Pierce's eyes widened in disbelief before they closed for the last time. Fury stared at the lifeless body, a faint sadness in his eyes. This man had once been a mentor to him.
Meanwhile, on the Helicarrier, Steve Rogers was locked in a struggle with Bucky, desperately trying to break through to him.
"Bucky, wake up! We're friends! Don't you remember me?" he shouted, dodging punches. Steve had the strength to end the fight quickly, but he couldn't bring himself to hurt his best friend. He tried again and again to reach Bucky's mind, only to be met with another blow each time.
Suddenly, a barrage of missiles exploded nearby, tearing through the ranks of HYDRA operatives rushing to aid Bucky. Steve glanced around, stunned to see HYDRA forces being eliminated by their own project. Project Insight had turned on HYDRA instead of targeting him. He didn't have much time to think about it, though, as Bucky launched himself at him again.
Across the world, HYDRA's network crumbled as the Helicarriers purged every known HYDRA agent. Dr. Zola's data had exposed them all, including operatives who had hidden in plain sight for years. HYDRA's worldwide infrastructure was nearly obliterated—except for Sokovia, which remained shielded from detection.
With HYDRA neutralized, the Helicarriers redirected their weapons at each other, disabling the Insight Project once and for all. Thor had no intention of letting it fall into the Council's hands. While he considered salvaging them for his own purposes, he decided against it; the Helicarriers were nothing special compared to the technology he had in mind for his next endeavor.
The Helicarriers exploded in a brilliant flash, and as Captain America and Bucky continued their struggle, they both fell from the carrier, plummeting together toward the ground below.
Back in S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters, Thor and Maria Hill were finishing up as Natasha and Sharon took charge of the aftermath.
"How does it look?" Nick Fury asked, stepping into the room.
"HYDRA's network is all but eradicated—except for one place: Sokovia. The Mind Stone scepter is still there, and it's blocking signals from reaching the region," Hill replied.
"What about S.H.I.E.L.D. itself?"
"We've lost more than half our agents. Most were HYDRA operatives, but we did lose some who fought on our side," Thor sighed. "S.H.I.E.L.D. is effectively finished. The Council won't ignore something this big. Do you regret it?"
Fury shook his head. "I don't regret it. Sometimes you have to dig out the infection for the body to heal."
In a forest by the river, the Winter Soldier—Bucky Barnes—dragged an unconscious Steve Rogers out of the water, pulling him onto the shore. He'd been ordered to kill Steve, yet something within him protested.
A quiet voice in his heart whispered, If you let him die, you'll regret it.
For a moment, Bucky hesitated, conflicted. Finally, he took a deep breath, choosing to follow the faint trace of his old self. He saved Steve.
