Chapter 41: Shiny Pokemon!
After getting back from Treasure Town the day after their trip to Mt. Bristle, Dante and Pikachu already met the Azurill brothers again and received their thanks. At that time, Dante extended an invitation to any of the two if they wanted to join their team, but the both of them refused after some thinking.
Dante only needed one of them to join the team, but the both of them can't be separated. Especially Azurill, it hasn't even been a month since he was born. And Marill has to take care of his brother, as well as their mother who is still sick.
He felt it was a bit of a pity at that time, and Dante planned to extend an invitation again when Azurill was a bit older and their mother recovered. He just didn't expect that he'd meet the same Pokemon here in this dungeon.
The reason why he wanted to get an Azurill was because of its powerful Ability, Huge Power.
As Chatot mentioned when discussing the methods to further advance, some Pokemon are born with a powerful Ability, and Huge Power is one of the most powerful abilities a Pokemon can possess.
Huge Power has only one simple effect, it allows the Pokemon to exert double the strength of their physical attacks. In simpler terms, it doubles their Attack stat. And because it's their innate ability, there is no extra burden on them unlike Pikachu holding a Light Ball.
Azumarill, Azurill's final evolution, also has a good defensive typing of Fairy and Water. It is resistant to 6 types, immune to Dragon type, and has 2x weakness to Electric, Grass, and Poison types.
Its only huge drawback is the low racial Speed limit of only 50. Due to this, Azumarill exclusively relies on Aqua Jet if it wants to move around the battlefield. Azumarill is currently placed somewhere between the middle and top in the "Best Pokemon for Trainers!" in the Alliance website.
And with the friendly nature of Azumarill, it is included in one of the recommended Starters for new Trainers.
When Dante was still studying and just learned that Pokemon's can break through their racial limit, his first thought was how broken Pokemon like Azumarill and Medicham would be.
The high school books didn't discuss in-depth why Trainers don't just choose these Pokemon and focus on breaking through their racial limits. Even after becoming an official Trainer, Dante still obtained no concrete answer.
He can only hope to get an answer to his question after entering University and asking a professor.
For now, however, Dante was not in a rush to know why others didn't do that. As long as he himself knew that it was feasible for himself, he wouldn't hesitate about making the decision.
The only thing he had to do now is wait. As long as he got his first Gym Badge, he'd have the qualifications to register another Pokemon. At that time, he can stroll around this dungeon with Pikachu again and find the most suitable Azurill to join the team. They won't disappear anyway.
Continuing their trek through the dungeon, Dante and Pikachu became more at ease as they adapted to the watery environment. As they were exploring, the two of them found a Power Band in one of the rooms.
The Power Band boosts the attack of the Pokemon wearing it.
"Everytime we find something like this, I really can't help but wonder. How in the world do items spawn in the dungeon everyday!?"
"Hahaha maybe you can set that as your exploration goal, Dante. Anyway, it's good for me. Every dungeon exploration will be sure to give us treasures!"
"Sigh, I really hope I can be as simple-minded as you."
Dante replaced his Def. Scarf, which is already becoming less and less useful with his assassin fighting style. After equipping the Power Band in the menu, Dante looked at his Attack stat that jumped from 55 to 67, a full 12 increase!
With the Power Band equipped, Dante and Pikachu had a much easier time defeating the other Pokemon that came their way.
Because of discovering the Power Band, the two of them started to search the whole floor of each level, hoping they could find a Special Band for Pikachu. This inevitably slowed down their Exploration, especially since they needed to rest more often.
Until they reached the fifth floor, they were not able to find a Special Band. However, their efforts resulted in them leveling up twice and gaining a new move.
Dante learned Hyper Fang, one of the strong Normal type moves available. Hyper Fang is a physical attack with a base power of 80. It is perfectly suitable for Dante's current fighting style.
When Dante first tried to use this skill from the menu, a projection made of Normal type energy formed in front of his face and coordinated with his mouth to make a fast biting motion.
Dante was a little unaccustomed to using his mouth as a part of attacking, especially when his head was close to the enemy. It feels like he is really going to bite them. However, when he remembered that Pikachu had to make a kissing motion to use Draining Kiss, he immediately felt a lot better.
And speaking of Pikachu, his newly learned move is the most well-known Electric type attack. He learned Thunderbolt, a move with a base power of 90.
This move became Pikachu's strongest Electric special attack, capable of unleashing almost double the damage from his previous strongest Electric move. Of course, the effect of Electro Web to slow the opponent down is more important than the damage it causes.
Starting from the fifth floor, the two of them encountered a wider variety of Pokemon. There were Illumise, Seaking, Dragonair, Qwilfish, and Marill. In addition, their stats have also risen to the early-mid 40s.
Seaking was a particularly tricky opponent. Its Lightning Rod ability makes Pikachu's Electric attacks redirected towards itself and absorbed.
Whenever a Seaking is present, Dante will jump into its shadow then proceed to combo it with Hyper Fang and Fury Swipes. After that, Pikachu will use Electro Web to slow down the other Pokemon in the room.
Quagsire, who is immune to Electric moves, can easily be dealt with using Pikachu's Grass Knot that deals four times damage to it. After that, they just have to be careful not to get hit while fighting. With the debuff in speed, it was easy to manage.
Just as the two were about to finish the last Pokemon in the room, a stream of water suddenly appeared from under water. Dante and Pikachu, who already encountered a situation like this countless times in this dungeon, easily got out of the way.
Looking back, the two saw a golden, bipedal Pokemon with an ovoid body and large ears resembling a rabbit. It looks like a large golden egg with appendages. It was currently standing in front of the Marill that the two of them were about to finish.
"A shiny Azumarill!!"
Dante was extremely surprised. He didn't expect that a shiny Pokemon would exist in this PMD world. If Dante remembered correctly, the only shiny present in the official game was Celebi, which had a pink coloration.
Shiny Pokemon are Pokemon that have a significant deviation of its color compared to its counterpart. Because Shiny Pokemon are so rare, there was not enough data to determine the reason for their existence. However, one widely accepted hypothesis is that Pokemon become Shiny due to an abnormality in their genetics.
Aside from their coloration, most shinies possess something that makes them different from their same species. It may be having an egg move which that species of Pokemon can't learn, or possessing a different Ability, and even a different typing entirely!
Among the known Shinies in the human world, the most famous one is the Shiny Kingdra of France's Champion, Neuvillette. It mutated to possess both the Swift Swim and Sniper Ability. When under the rain, no Pokemon was recorded to be its match. This was also the origin of his title as "The Sovereign of Waters".
