Chapter 20: 20. Disclaimer: Proceed at Your Own Risk!

"First and foremost—let me make it clear, the Tyranids are unlike any xenos we've faced before! Be it Orks or Eldar, at least they are native to the Milky Way galaxy. The Tyranids, however, originate from beyond the galaxy itself!

"The true name of their species is unknown, but since the first planet to go silent was Tyran, I will refer to them as the Tyranids."

The Space Marines remained solemn. If the Tyranids truly were an extragalactic threat, this would mark the first time in the Imperium's history that mankind faced such an enemy.

They eagerly awaited Noah's next words. However, Noah paused, his tone turning somewhat resigned:

"Of course, I know many of you must be curious about the source of my information, but disclosing it could very well see me on trial before the Inquisition..."

Calgar immediately understood Noah's implication—he needed assurances that he would not be arrested by the Inquisition afterward.

"On my honor as a member of the Ultramarines and by the name of our Primarch, Roboute Guilliman, I swear that I will not reveal anything discussed here to anyone!"

Calgar's expression was serious; his words carried the weight of the entire Chapter.

Huron and the other two Chapter Masters likewise made solemn oaths in the name of their respective Chapters.

In truth, Noah wasn't worried about the Inquisition; if he truly feared it, he wouldn't have crossed the galaxy to find the Ultramarines. However, appearances mattered—if he acted too carelessly, it would only breed distrust.

With the assurances of the four Chapter Masters, Noah revealed his pre-prepared explanation:

"My intelligence comes from a xenos species known as the Zoats, a strange race that is part humanoid and part quadruped. Toward the end of M38, their fleet attempted to enter the Imperium from the galaxy's eastern fringe.

"Though the Imperium annihilated their fleet by 226.M39, some Zoats survived. My predecessor, Theodora von Valancius, encountered a Zoat tribe on a feral world.

"The Tyranids are unlike any other xenos. They function as a gestalt entity, controlled by a hive mind known as the 'Hive Mind.'

"As a result, the vast majority of Tyranid organisms lack independent thought; they are merely tools wielded by the Hive Mind to invade and consume worlds.

"Among the few Tyranid subspecies with high intelligence are the Genestealers and the Zoats, who serve as their vanguard forces. If the Genestealers can be likened to spies cultivated by the Hive Mind, the Zoats are its diplomats. However, for reasons unknown—perhaps due to their distance from the Hive Mind—the Zoats have broken free from its control."

Noah paused briefly before adding:

"Of course, all of my information comes from my family's archives, which are based entirely on Zoat accounts. Thus, there may be errors—or even deliberate traps."

Noah conveniently shifted any potential blame onto his predecessor, Theodora, while also issuing a disclaimer.

The Space Marines nodded in acknowledgment. Whether or not they believed him was another matter, but outwardly, they accepted his explanation.

"In addition to vanguard forces like the Genestealers and Zoats, the main strength of the Tyranids lies in their hive fleets. Each fleet is composed of countless bio-ships, carrying an unending swarm of ground forces."

A Space Marine without his helmet raised his hand.

A hovering servo-skull swiftly moved to him, announcing his name:

"Demetrian Titus, Ultramarines 2nd Company Sergeant."

"Proceed, Sergeant Titus."

Titus asked bluntly:

"What is their objective? Conquest or plunder?"

"Neither."

Noah dismissed his assumptions and posed a seemingly unrelated question:

"Sergeant Titus, are you hungry?"

"I am not."

Although puzzled, Titus answered.

"Neither am I—at least not right now. But I can guarantee someone out there is starving."

"Is it hunger that drives them?" Calgar inquired.

"Yes."

Noah's expression turned grave. "Their objective is, and always has been, singular: to consume everything they encounter to satiate their endless hunger."

"If the Tyranids are extragalactic, how do they achieve faster-than-light travel?" another Space Marine asked.

The servo-skull announced his name:

"Ultramarines 1st Company Captain, Saul Invictus."

"In their hive fleets, there exists a bio-ship known as the Narvhal. These organisms create compressed spatial corridors by manipulating the gravitational fields of star systems. Through these corridors, Tyranid ships can travel vast distances quickly.

"However, strong gravitational fields interfere with the Narvhal's sensory abilities. Once they near a star system, the hive fleet must rely on slower conventional propulsion."

"Any further questions?" Noah asked, waiting until no one spoke before continuing his briefing:

"The Tyranids' invasion strategy typically follows five distinct phases:

"Reconnaissance, approach, assault, conquest, and consumption.

"The first phase, discovery, is carried out by their vanguard forces—the Genestealers and Zoats. They infiltrate valuable planets, and once their numbers are sufficient, they send out potent psychic beacons to draw the hive fleets.

"The second phase, approach, begins as the hive fleets arrive. This causes a phenomenon the Zoats call the 'Shadow in the Warp,' a psychic disruption that prevents astropathic communication, shrouds the Astronomican, and renders Warp travel perilous and unpredictable."

Calgar's expression darkened. So that explained why those 'missing' worlds had failed to send warnings or requests for aid.

"The third phase, assault. Once the hive fleet breaches a planet's orbit, bio-ships will release massive spores and mycetic spores into the atmosphere. The spores unleash viruses and bacteria that alter the planet's environment, while the mycetic spores deploy countless Tyranid organisms to the surface.

"The fourth phase, conquest. With billions of ground units, the Tyranids swiftly annihilate all resistance on the planet, regardless of their target.

"The fifth phase, consumption. Once resistance is eradicated, the Tyranids begin harvesting the planet. Everything, including their own fallen organisms, is processed into nutrient-rich bio-fluid—a substance the Zoats call 'biomass.'

"This biomass is then transported to orbiting hive ships through capillary towers growing out of digestion pools. Ultimately, the planet is stripped bare—no life, no minerals, no atmosphere, no water. Nothing remains."

Noah added:

"Typically, the first phase takes the longest—possibly hundreds or thousands of years before the hive fleet arrives. However, once a fleet enters a system, it takes less than two Terran months to strip a planet bare. If the planet lacks resistance or its defenders are quickly overwhelmed, this process is even faster.

"From the third phase onward, the fourth and fifth phases occur simultaneously. Thus, attempting to defeat the Tyranids through a war of attrition on the ground is futile.

"Even if their ground forces suffer heavy losses, their corpses are recycled into biomass to create more Tyranids. They will not stop until the planet is completely consumed.

"In essence, our only chance of victory lies in annihilating the hive fleet before it can begin its assault."
