Chapter 34: 34 Yokosuka
On the main road of Tokonosu City, a Humvee was speeding along, with Saeko in the passenger seat, studying the map intently.
Saeko was not only strong in combat but also proficient in various other skills. This was due to the elite education she had received from the Busujima family. While she wasn't a master in everything, she was well-versed in many areas.
"The nearest supermarket is on the second left from the next intersection. There's also a gas station right across from the supermarket."
"Great. We'll stop by the supermarket first to resupply. Whatever we can get, we'll take. Afterward, we'll fill up on gas."
Altair said as he began to slow down, carefully watching for the turn.
"According to what Rika mentioned, this outbreak of the biohazard crisis started spreading from Yokosuka. At first, it didn't spread as quickly, but after the initial phase, the infection and outbreak rates accelerated."
Anyone who's played Plague Inc. knows that when trying to eradicate humanity with a virus, you don't want high lethality from the beginning. That would make it too easy to detect. Once detected, containment measures would be immediate. Thus, the virus needs to hide in its early stages, focusing on enhancing its infection rate. Only after a significant number of people are infected does it then explode into a deadly wave, wiping out many in one go.
The zombie virus, while highly contagious, also had a weakness; it could only be transmitted through contact with infected blood. Maybe at the start, the virus could spread through airborne transmission, like in the Resident Evil movies, but once it hit the ground, the only method of transmission became zombie bites or contact with infected blood from animals or humans.
Zombies, aggressive as they were, could effectively spread the virus, but that aggression also made them easy to spot. It was only a matter of time before they were discovered.
The problem in most movies is that the government and military forces are portrayed as weak and incompetent, leading to widespread outbreaks, with the world's salvation left to small groups of survivors. In reality, should such a crisis break out, official military power would be far stronger than most people imagine. After all, the military has the capacity to flip the table if needed.
The slow response to this crisis in Japan? Well, that's just the way the plot goes.
Altair slammed on the brakes, bringing the vehicle to a halt in front of the supermarket. Both he and Saeko got out of the car.
"Saeko, could you go inside and gather as much food as you can? You can use the carts. Just take whatever you can load up."
"Got it, no problem."
Saeko opened the car door, preparing to exit.
"Be careful. Safety first."
"Understood."
Saeko smiled lightly, gripping the wooden sword in her hand as she stepped out.
Altair watched as she got out, then hit the gas, driving across the street to the gas station. Although there was likely fuel available, without staff on duty, refueling wasn't exactly straightforward. But this wasn't an issue for Altair.
Several zombies in gas station uniforms were lingering inside. With a swift press of the accelerator, Altair drove right over them, flattening them beneath the Humvee's wheels.
Pulling the handbrake and removing the keys, Altair jumped out of the car and drew his lightsaber hilt. With a swift stroke, he decapitated the nearby zombies, leaving them lifeless on the ground.
After sheathing his lightsaber, Altair searched the bodies of the zombies, soon finding an employee ID card. He used the card to activate the fuel pump. Beep. It worked.
Altair had prepared several empty containers in the Humvee's trunk, specifically for carrying fuel. After all, ensuring a steady supply of fuel was crucial for long-distance travel. He spent the next thirty minutes filling all the containers. Once everything was full, he got back in the car and returned to the supermarket entrance.
Saeko hadn't come out yet. Refueling was quicker than gathering supplies in a chaotic supermarket. After all, the store was likely in disarray, and finding uncontaminated food would take time.
When Saeko finally emerged, she was covered in blood, clearly having encountered quite a few zombies inside. Still, she wore a smile, as if she had enjoyed the experience. To anyone else, the sight of her drenched in blood with a grin on her face might have been terrifying, but to Altair, it was just another part of the world he had come to expect.
"Any trouble?"
"Not much. Just a few zombies were clustered near the entrance. I cleared them out when I went in, no big deal."
Saeko spoke casually as she pulled out two carts filled with supplies. "There are two more carts inside. This is everything useful I could find. Most of the rest was damaged. I didn't take anything that seemed unsafe, just to avoid the risk of infection."
"Good call." Altair agreed. "Better to leave anything suspect behind. We can't take chances with a virus."
Once Saeko had brought out all four carts, Altair loaded everything into his 4D Pocket. With their supplies secured, both of them got back into the car and hit the road again.
Their next destination was Yokosuka, based on the intel Rika had given them.
Speaking of Yokosuka, many people were likely familiar with it. The city was home to the Yokosuka Naval Base, one of Japan's four major military ports. More importantly, it was also where the United States Fleet was stationed.
Thinking about it, Altair realized that while this biohazard wasn't caused by Umbrella Corporation, it still had connections to the United States Fleet. It made sense... if anyone was conducting dangerous, unethical bioweapon research, it was likely them.
It's always been like that, no matter what games or movies, if it's not Russia, it's the United States at the center of all the trouble.
"Hopefully, this won't turn out to be too much of a hassle. If we can just resolve everything at Yokosuka, that would be ideal."
Altair thought as he sped along the highway, heading out of Tokonosu City and toward their destination.
However, as Altair had feared, things were far from simple at Yokosuka Port, the ground zero of the virus outbreak. The zombies there were undergoing strange mutations.
