Chapter 35: 35 Evolution
Yokosuka City, located on the southeastern Miura Peninsula in Kanagawa Prefecture, is considered part of the Tokyo metropolitan area in economic terms. Broadly speaking, this place could even be called Tokyo.
However, at this moment, Yokosuka had turned into a ruined city. The streets were filled with wandering zombies, who were once the original residents of this place.
After Altair drove his Humvee off the highway, he entered the city. But as soon as he did, he was greeted by a large swarm of zombies. From a distance, Altair could see the horde charging toward him, so large in number that they completely blocked the road.
"This isn't exactly what I had in mind... Is this what Tokyo's population density looks like?"
Altair quipped from the driver's seat as he stopped the car and pulled the handbrake.
"Altair-kun, should I get out?"
"No, the numbers seem overwhelming. Stay in the car."
Altair replied and handing her a magic stone pistol.
"It's inconvenient to use a sword in the car. Use this instead; it's more practical for close defense."
"Understood."
Saeko smiled as she gripped the pistol, unbuckled her seatbelt, and sat in the front passenger seat, ready to deal with any zombies that might approach the vehicle. Meanwhile, Altair got out of the car alone.
There was no other choice. The number of zombies was too great, and if Saeko got out, she might get injured. The zombies were far stronger than they looked, and Saeko wouldn't be able to fight so many at once.
Moreover, these zombies were somewhat different from the ones Altair had seen in Tokonosu City earlier.
"Alright, I get what's wrong now." Seeing the zombies getting closer and closer, Altair couldn't help but twitch his mouth. What did he just witness? Those zombies were sprinting, they were doing parkour!
The zombies in Tokonasu City moved at a jogging pace, but the ones in front of him were sprinting like Olympic runners!
"What is this, elite zombies with a boss buff? This is straight out of World War Z."
Good thing he didn't let Saeko get out. If she had, she would've died on the spot, no doubt about it. These things were not something she could handle.
"I need heavy firepower for this."
Altair reached into his 4D Pocket and pulled out a rocket launcher. Although he only had ten magic stone rounds, now wasn't the time to save ammo... he needed area-of-effect weapons to clear the horde.
He hoisted the rocket launcher onto his shoulder, jumped three meters into the air, and aimed at the center of the zombie horde before pulling the trigger.
The magic stone shell inside the launcher activated, drawing magical energy and concentrating it on the barrel. A thick blue beam of energy shot out, directly hitting the center of the horde. The impact tore through the zombies, and the concentrated magical energy exploded, causing a massive shockwave that blew the zombies apart.
A blue light ball formed at the center of the horde and rapidly expanded, creating a powerful ring-shaped blast that sent zombies flying in all directions.
Boom!
Altair landed on the roof of the Humvee, watching with Saeko as zombies rained down like hailstones. Some hit the ground with enough force to shatter limbs, while others were decapitated or torn apart mid-air.
On the ground, there were no residual flames. This was the advantage of the magic-powered rocket launcher... clean and efficient, though the destructive power wasn't quite as high as one might expect. It was all about the raw force of the magical energy explosion, not fire or other effects.
"It seems like this weapon still has room for improvement."
Altair patted the roof of the car. Saeko rolled down the window and looked at him, her eyes full of amazement. She already thought Altair was impressive, especially with his lightsaber... but she hadn't expected him to have such a powerful weapon.
"Saeko, do you know how to drive?"
"I don't."
"Alright then." Altair sighed. He had hoped Saeko could drive while he handled the zombies from the roof, but no luck.
With no other choice, Altair jumped down from the roof. "You get on top, and I'll drive."
"Got it!" Saeko, still in awe of Altair's performance, nodded absentmindedly. With his help, she climbed onto the roof. It wasn't until she was up there that she realized just how powerful Altair had been in battle.
"Was that a rocket launcher?"
Saeko asked, noticing that Altair hadn't put the weapon away yet. From her perspective, it looked like a regular rocket launcher, but the power was far beyond what she knew, and the explosion worked completely differently.
"It's a rocket launcher. Take it, if we encounter another horde, just use it. It has nine shots left."
Altair had set it to single-fire mode. One magic stone could fire ten times; he had just used one shot, leaving nine for Saeko to use at will.
"And take this too."
He handed her a modified AK-47.
Now, Saeko found herself with a rocket launcher on her back, a pistol in her left hand, and an AK-47 in her right... completely armed to the teeth. She was a little stunned.
"Altair-kun, do you want me to handle all of this?"
"That's right."
"But... I'm better with a sword."
"Unfortunately, this situation doesn't allow for that."
Against normal zombies, using a sword might still work, but with parkouring zombies? Close combat was a death sentence unless you were some master swordsman cutting through them like butter.
"You're right." Saeko muttered, her eyes drawn to a zombie climbing toward them with a freakish gait, crawling rapidly on all fours from the top of a building.
Altair thought it looked like something out of Attack on Titan, but before he could say anything, Saeko sprayed the zombie with bullets, hitting it in the head and stopping its advance.
"Exactly like that. You handle the ones up top, and I'll drive us to the port."
Yokosuka's most important feature was naturally Yokosuka Port, the base of the United States Fleet and their military research lab. If the virus outbreak had started here, there was a 99.9% chance it originated from there.
