Alan Lake

The city goes to sleep, the mob wakes up. What a funny and interesting phrase it is, it's just a pity it doesn't reflect the whole truth. Anyway, it doesn't work in this town. Yorkshin... this town never goes to sleep, just like the mafia never goes to sleep. The only exceptions are law-abiding citizens, and generally normal people. But there are always plenty of abnormals.

The nightlife here is so vibrant. Artificial light illuminates everything almost as well as in the daytime, and there are fewer people walking the streets than usual, but still enough to realise that this city never goes to sleep.

And I didn't get any sleep today. Today I have a job that requires that it be done exclusively at night. I don't mind, though.

A nightclub is the place where life is most active at night. Such places are always full of personalities of different colours, who come there for various reasons. Someone wants to party, someone just to drink, someone to pick up some whore, probably with a bouquet of diseases, someone to find drugs, and someone to conduct serious business. All in all, there's plenty of variety.

I, as the leader of the Elimination Squad, took it upon myself to go to one of these clubs and neutralise the target, which was assigned to us by our superiors. I could leave it to someone else in my squad, but I want to do it myself.

John's already taken a beating from the Bellamy fight, Huxell's abilities aren't meant to be quiet, Mike can kill everyone there just because he wants to, and Greg can get in his head about anything, though he'd be the best person for it.

But no, I'll do it myself. I undertook this task not so much because I wanted the others to rest, but because it could be considered a kind of rest after yesterday. So to speak, to reflect on everything while keeping myself busy. And there's a lot to think about after yesterday.

Yesterday I came one step closer to realising my plan. Other people would have thought it crazy and would hardly have dared to do such a thing so easily, but I did it. Not just for my own sake, but for everyone else's, I did it. Yesterday, I attacked Passione's first lieutenant, Kurapika Kuruta.

It went exactly as I planned. He never realised it was me, but he showed me his abilities.

Soon... soon that bastard will pay for everything. They're all gonna pay.

***

Okay, here comes the nightclub. You can hear the music going on inside from the street. I'm wearing normal clothes, my face is normal, so I should be able to pass face control. And even if I don't... that's not gonna stop me.

Steve Glover.

And here's the nightclub itself. I had to walk round for a while to get dark enough to get it going. Now I have to go inside, but the problem is that at least because of the clothes I forgot to change, I won't be able to pass the face control, so I'll have to find another entrance. And of course that entrance would be a black entrance.

I headed to the back of the building, and good thing I had no trouble getting in after all. The only guard standing there had gone to the bathroom, which I took advantage of.

One problem solved, now there's the rest. We need to find the target and neutralise it. The main thing is to try to do it quietly, without attracting attention.

Walking a little further into the building, I hardly noticed that I was already in the middle of a large dance floor. The music was blasting in my ears, a bunch of people were shaking their bodies so that you could even feel a barely perceptible shake, and someone smelled of alcohol. Add to all that the crazy lighting and you've got an epileptic's hell.

Well, I can see why Chris didn't want to take this assignment. It's not so much the injuries he sustained in the battle as it is his aversion to such places. I've known him for a long time, and during our friendship I've learnt that he hates clubs as much as he loves rock concerts. It's understandable, because he can't stand pop music, which is often played here. But at the same time, he's a little bit categorical, if you ask me. Sometimes such places play good electronics, but such an inveterate rocker as Chris doesn't care about it. I mean, it's a matter of taste.

All right, well, we can't get distracted, we've got to find a target. The question is, where would he hide? If he knew they were coming for him, the most logical place to hide would be in the crowd. But he probably doesn't have any information about that, so that's out. In that case, based on the information I've received, he'll probably be on the first floor. If I remember correctly, he came to this club on some business, and all serious business and negotiations are usually conducted in the VIP-rooms, which are located on the second and sometimes on the third floors of such clubs. All that's left is to find a way to the first floor.

Damn, there are so many people here, and everyone is jumping and shaking as if they had drunk a carload of energy drinks. It really amazes me sometimes how people have so much energy. They've been working during the day and now they're like this. I don't get it.

Yeah, there's the stairs to the first floor! Bingo! Now it's just a matter of going upstairs and entering the VIP area. The guards won't be a problem, but it's a bit noisy. But I'll do it quickly, so no one will realise.

I pass one person, another, and then I'm almost at the stairs. Good thing there's no--

BAM!

Oh, shit! Shit, I lost my guard for a moment, as someone bumped into me and I almost fell down. I'm blind!

- Hey, look where--

- Hey, look where you're going.

Before I could really express my displeasure, I immediately looked at my offender, and then I was speechless.

Lake? Alan Lake?! What the--

Alan Lake

What the hell? Do my eyes deceive me? It's Steve Glover! What the hell's a member of the Special Forces doing here? No, seriously, this can't be happening. The task of elimination was given to my squad, and I'm in charge of it. And if one squad is given the job, then no other squad has anything to do with it.

Maybe he somehow managed to find out that I took it and decided to stop me? It's a possibility, since the Specialisation Squad doesn't like us, but still... I doubt it.

There is one other possibility. It's supposed to be the least likely, but it's the one I believe in the most. It seems to me that the elimination mission was given not only to our squad, but to them as well. This should be impossible, because the leadership can not allow such a thing, but something tells me that it is. I think it was set up on purpose.

Well, I'll have to think it over and figure it all out later. Right now I'm on my feet and ready for the worst possible outcome, and that's true of Glover, too.

In his eyes you can clearly see the readiness to start the battle. He's fully confident now, and he sees our meeting as an opportunity not only to complete the task, but also to deal with me.

Well, there's no time for motives and reasons, so if he attacks, I'll defend myself. But it's better to avoid a fight.

- What a meeting! Frankly, I'm surprised to see you here, Glover. And what is your reason for coming to such a place? I've never seen you in a place like this before, and you don't look like you're here to relax. Let me guess: You've been given a mission to take out a target in this club.

- What? But how do you know that?

- Ha, that's easy. The thing is, I've been given the same assignment.

- What~? What the hell are you talking about? There's no way two different squads can get the same mission. That's impossible! You... You're just trying to fuck us up. You and your whole squad... you just want us to fail and get punished. Is that it?

- Hmm... Think what you want, but I told you the plain truth. Anyway... I suggest we make peace. Just get out of here and then everyone will be safe. So you get a little reprimand, so what? It won't hurt you, you're already the favourite people in the organisation. But it won't hurt anyone else. It's not in anyone's interest to cause unnecessary bloodshed right now. So just shove your unreasonable hatred up your arse and go home.

- You! What the fuck do you know, you prick?! You have no idea how we live our lives! You make up your own shit, and now you're jealous about it!

- And you don't seem to dislike us justifiably, do you?

- How can I be okay with you? I've heard everything they say about you. I've heard what you've been in prison for. You're the real criminals and maniacs! You can't be treated any other way!

-So that's how it is? So it's because of our past? Well, that may be true for other members of the Specialisation Squad, but not for you. I don't sense any genuine hatred in you. Or maybe it's just a hatred that's being forced on you. A fake, so to speak. Ever think about that?

Glover was silent for a while, but there was anger in that silence. In his gaze, in the grind of his teeth. Apparently, I'd hurt his feelings. He's not very good at controlling his emotions.

- You! I am!

- You want to fight me? Not a good idea. Trust me, you don't stand a chance. I'm telling you this from a purely objective point of view.

- We'll see about that!

I didn't want to do this, but it looks like we're going to have to fight. I'll have to teach him a lesson.

After shoving people out of the way, Glover came at me. He tried to strike me in the face, but his speed is still inferior to mine. It wasn't a problem to dodge all of his subsequent blows, and then I kicked him under his breath, sending him flying into the centre of the dance floor.

The people who had been having a carefree time before were now agitated. They didn't really know what was going on and just scattered in different directions, thus making room for the fight, then began to talk among themselves and watch what would happen next.

Glover had come to his senses and was on his feet, choosing his moment to attack. I moved closer to him and just waited for him to act. Eventually he came at me, but at the last moment, before he hit me in the face with his fist, he cancelled the blow and grabbed a switchblade out of his pocket and stabbed me with it. I managed to dodge, but he still left a small cut on my cheek.

Hmm, he's not bad. He's not as slow as I thought he was, and he's tricky. But it's still not enough to beat me.

I kicked him in the hand he was holding the knife in, but surprisingly he didn't drop it. Then I kicked him in the jaw with the same foot, but he was able to withstand it and landed another blow that left a cut on his chest.

- Hey, don't ruin your shirt! - I said and threw him off me with another punch.

It looks like he's slowly starting to fight more seriously. Before, he was just probing the ground to see how best to proceed. I'm doing the same thing now.

As Glover accelerated even more, he threw a combo of punches at me. A couple of kicks and knees, a few punches to the body and face, and a few stabbing attempts. I dodged and blocked some of the blows, but it was clear from all this that he was getting more and more serious.

I responded by hitting him a little harder, and with a single leg kick I knocked the knife away from him, which flew right into one of the guards who were rushing towards us. They didn't seem to like that and started pulling out their guns.

Glover decided to take advantage of the situation and quickly ran up to the guards and grabbed a gun from one of them, and knocked out the others with a few quick movements, then started shooting at me. The whole club panicked and everyone ran away.

Trying to hurt me with a firearm? You're holding back, Glover. You can't take me down with that.

I dodged all of his shots with no problem, then quickly moved in close to him and tried to strike, but he was surprisingly quicker and hit me in the face and then in the body, sending me flying backwards. His punch made my nose bleed.

Oh, yeah? You asked for it, Steve. Now I'm gonna start playing hardball.

With even more speed, I attacked Glover again and dodged a few lunges, hitting him in the body, sending him flying backwards into the nearby bar.

Now it was time to use the ability.

And ta~k...

Ability one: Double machine gun.

I pointed my hands towards Glover, and then each of my fingers transformed to resemble the muzzle of a gun. As a result, my hands were now like actual machine guns, with five barrels on each of them.

Suck it!

From each finger on my hands, concentrated clots of aura began to fly out, which in their power and speed resembled the most real machine gun bullets. They turned everything in their path into a sieve, and if Glover had been hit by them, he would have been at least seriously injured, but luckily for him, he was able to react in time to hide behind the bar.

He's definitely not going to last much longer. He has only a few seconds to think about his tactics before the bullets tear the bar and reach him.

After a couple of seconds, when the counter was almost completely destroyed, Glover jumped out of there, jumping high into the air and throwing several bottles of alcohol at me. All of the bottles shattered as soon as I turned my fire towards them, and the alcohol in them blinded me in my eyes.

What a bastard! He'd calculated that moment well.

I managed to open my eyes, and barely had I done so when I saw that Steve was already a few metres away from me and was about to attack in a leap.

Don't even think about it!

Second ability: Sharp Waltz.

Glover had already swung and was about to strike, but at the last moment all the bottle shards around him shook and a moment later, as if magnetised, flew at high speed towards Steve. Because of this he was forced to break off the attack and concentrate on defence, but even that didn't help much. Several shards of glass slammed into his hands, and one almost hit him in the eye, and on top of that I hit him in the stomach, sending him crashing to the floor and trying to throw a punch that I dodged by jumping back.

I could see in his eyes that he was surprised. He doesn't understand why I attacked him with a completely different ability this time.

Well, even though this is the first time we've fought, I know roughly what your ability is, but you don't know anything about mine.

Glover was about to attack again, but as soon as he took a step, all the shards on the ground, as well as the knife I had knocked out of his hands, trembled and drew towards Steve. This time he was ready for it, but even so, the knife and the shards still left a few shallow cuts.

Heh, he still doesn't seem to fully understand what this ability is all about. It's a fun thing to tell him, but it won't make much difference.

- I see you're surprised? You don't understand what it is? It's really quite simple. It's an ability that allows me to draw all sharp objects in my vicinity to a specific point in space, like a magnet. Glass shards, knives, forks, anything... anything sharp enough to cut a person can be used with this ability. In this case, that point in space is you.

Yes, that's exactly right. When used properly, against certain opponents, under the right conditions, this ability can be a very serious weapon.

Next, I created the necessary point in space right on the shelves of the bar, where there was a pile of bottles of alcohol. Several knives that were behind the bar attracted there, which immediately broke several bottles, and the shards that appeared as a result, broke all the others. Now that I had more shells at my disposal, I sent them at Glover. Let's see how he handles it.

To my slight surprise, Steve didn't do anything supernatural and just rushed forward at me. Taking a defensive stance, he was able to protect all vital places from the projectiles, but one of the knives still stabbed him in the side, making his face twist in pain. But even after that, he didn't slow down and with a powerful leap he was right in front of my face, after which he delivered a powerful blow to my jaw that made my head ring a little.

What a bastard! He's moving and punching with no restraint, but there's still something left. I can make him show it. I'm gonna make you fight hard, Glover.

I hit Steve in the chest with all my might, but he was able to block it, albeit with noticeable difficulty. But it was only a distraction, for in the meantime I had created a new point in space that was right on Glover's back. The shards of glass that were still on the floor nearby drew in and embedded themselves in his lower back, causing him to weaken his defences, and I took advantage of that by delivering a blow to his jaw that sent him crashing to the floor.

Now I'll show you what real pain is, Glover!

As I stood over Steve I was about to deliver a single powerful blow with enough force to shatter a man's bone, and with that blow I intended to break both his legs. As soon as I swung, however, Glover's adrenaline apparently kicked in, for with a speed and force I hadn't expected to see, he kicked me with both feet, sending me flying upward and hitting the ceiling.

Damn, I'd let my guard down a bit. That was the hardest kick from him so far. Took me all the way to the ceiling, and this club has two floors.

But even that wasn't all. As I started to fall down, Steve jumped into the air and came at me like some kind of martial artist, knocking me sideways and smashing me through the glass into a room on the first floor.

Shit, he clearly hadn't missed leg day.

After recovering a little and looking around, I realised I was in a VIP room, and a man was lying a few metres away from me. And damn me, it was the very man I had been assigned to kill! What a coincidence! He was lying on the ground trying to get out of here, but it was very difficult for him because his legs were shot through. It seems that when I used the first ability, I accidentally hit him. Well, it happens, but now it's easy to eliminate him.

I moved out of the way while staying on my feet and headed towards my target to finish him off. All I had to do was just take a swing. However, just as I was about to finish it off, there was a loud rumble and the wall to the right of my target was destroyed and the man was torn in half.

Finally!... You've finally shown me your stand, Glover.

Before me stood a large, air-flying serpent that looked more like a dragon from Asian mythology. The thickness of its body was a little more than the average man, in length it reached about ten metres, its mouth was full of sharp teeth, with which to tear a man to shreds will not be any problem. The limbs of this creature were present and were expressed in the form of not particularly large wings with plumage on the back, as well as four paws, each of which had four razor-sharp claws. The entire creature, with the exception of the paws and wings, was coloured purple.

Yeah Steve, your stand is impressive. If he ripped this man apart so easily, I shouldn't be much of a problem for his teeth either. I'm not allowed to set myself up for him.

- 'Eh, I didn't mean to do that, Lake,' came Glover's voice from the ground floor. - I held back until the last minute. I was hoping to beat you anyway, but you forced me to summon him. Now don't expect an easy battle. For my booth will have no trouble tearing you to shreds. Go Deep Purple!

Damn it!

Steve Glover

Yeah, I had to call for a stand after all. Against someone like Alan Lake you have to hold back as long as possible and try to win without using all your strength, because otherwise he can get a lot of useful information about you and use it to win. But I have to do it now. He can't be defeated without a stand.

Destroy him, Deep Purple!

As soon as the booth moved to attack, Lake immediately jumped down from the first floor and tried to attack me, but no sooner had he come within a few metres than Deep Purple caught up with him and tried to bite him. Lake was close to ending up in the teeth of the booth, but at the last moment, almost in the jaws of the booth, he managed to deftly jump away.

Hmm, nimble son of a bitch. You can't just go head-on against him. We'll have to think of something.

Lake stood a little less than thirty metres away from me, watching my every move and the movement of my stand, which had formed a circle around me with a radius of several metres and was protecting me from all possible attacks.

We must wait for the right moment. As soon as he entered a radius of twenty metres, the stand would immediately attack him. But you have to admit, his speed is impressive. He can keep up with Deep Purple.

Finally, Lake moved out of the way and attacked me. That's it, twenty metres!

Deep Purple set off towards his target. He was close enough to try to bite Lake, but he managed to dodge, so he only tore his trouser leg a little. Alan tried to attack me again, and he almost succeeded, but at the last moment, when he had already made a swing, Deep Purple was close by, but this time he didn't try to bite, instead he hit him with his tail. And it worked. Apparently Alan hadn't expected this, and not being able to dodge or block the blow in time, he flew off to the side, nearly punching the wall.

Ha, what can you say now? You realise you're no match for my stand?

I was glad for a moment, but suddenly I felt a sharp pain in my leg. Looking down I saw that the cause of the sudden pain was the knife sticking out of my thigh. H-but how? When? Is it really the same ability he used earlier? No, it's not! There's still a pile of shards lying on the floor, and if it was the same ability, they would have been attracted to me as well. It's something else.

Before I could really figure out what caused the knife to be in me, a wooden chair flew at me from the side, smashing into the ground and sending me crashing to the floor.

W-what's that? How...? It wasn't Alan who threw it, which means--

- I see you're surprised again. - said Lake with a smug smile on his face. - I'll give you a hint on how to figure it out, just use Gyo.

I did as he said, and my surprise was unrivalled. As it turned out, there was some strange pink coloured substance attached to me. It was quite sticky and viscous, and its structure resembled... gum! It was a gum created out of нен gum. Somehow, he managed to attach it to me and to this knife and chair, and then made me pull myself in.

- It's healthy, isn't it? This ability is called Bungee Gum. And as you've realised... it is essentially the most common bubblegum. It has the same properties as regular gum, only enhanced. It's even more elastic and stronger. You'd think, how can you fight with gum? But as you can see... you can. And it's very effective.

I knew exactly what the gum was and what it was, but I was more surprised by something else. How could he use three abilities so different from each other? When he used the first two, I didn't think much of it. But now... They are completely different types of abilities. How? He manages to use the abilities that belong to isolation, manipulation, and transformation. How is that possible?

This question bothered me quite a lot, but there was no time to think about it, because Lake was attacking again. Or fear, he was walking towards Deep Purple, and every time he was close to getting into the teeth of the booth, he still managed to dodge and move away, and again made an attempt to attack. In terms of speed he managed to keep on par with Deep Purple, and sometimes even I thought he was a bit faster than him. But soon I was finally able to get him. Deep Purple didn't bite him, but he did severely injure his arm with his claws. Lake jumped back again and made a movement with his hand, and then I saw a large piece of wall nearby break off and fly straight at me. The booth was able to destroy the danger without any problems. However, Lake took advantage of Deep Purple's distraction and attacked, and this time his target was the booth itself.

What, is he crazy? Is he going to fight against the booth? He's a desperate guy.

Deep Purple responded by attacking him. Lake made attempts to attack, but whenever he was close to striking, the booth countered and tried to bite him or tear him with its claws. But the stand's attacks weren't too successful either. All it could do was tear his clothes and leave small scratches on his body as Alan dodged every attack.

All of this went on for about fifteen seconds before Lake finally stopped. He landed on the floor a few metres away from me, but he didn't attack. He just stood there and looked at me with a smug smile.

- Are you out of your mind? Or are you just suicidal?!

Deep Purple attacked Lake, but when he was a couple of metres away from biting him, the stand stopped abruptly. And with that, I felt my movements stiffen. I could barely move.

K... what the hell?! It's not like I gave a command... He... my stand... there's something holding him up!

Focusing the aura in my eyes even harder, I saw that my Deep Purple was completely braided with gum. His wings, his paws, his entire body was bound by gum that was cleverly attached to the ceiling, walls, and floor. And the whole thing was attached to Lake's hand, who was holding it tightly and blowing an aura all over it.

- Hmm, it seems like you've been able to figure it out for yourself now. The whole time I was jumping with your dragon, I wasn't aiming to hit it at all. All that time I was preparing a gum trap, which you successfully fell into. As far as I know, booths are spiritual entities and cannot be seen or touched by an ordinary person. However, if you focus your aura in your eyes, you can see them, and if you do it with a certain part of your body, you can touch them. I just put enough aura on this gum and that's why I was able to trap the stand, while hiding it from your eyes even more, so that without a strong enough use of Gyo, you wouldn't be able to see it. By the way... Ironic, don't you think? A booth user can't defeat an Un user, even though it would seem the booth is such a powerful weapon. Basically, it's not about your ability, it's about how you use it, that's all.

- You... You... Don't get cocky, you bastard! Your gum is still gum, albeit a little bit stronger. You may have restrained me, but it's only temporary. You can't hold me down with that shit!

Concentrating all my strength, my stand was able to bend its paw at an unnatural angle and cut through the gum restraining it, and then freeing itself from everything else was no problem. Even though my arm was now sprained, it didn't matter. Get Lake!

Deep Purple swung at Lake with all his speed, and though he dodged, the booth still managed to bend and hit him with its tail, sending Alan flying off and smashing through the wall.

Damn him! He's really strong, I can't handle him now. It's too risky to stay here, and besides, the police will be here soon, and I don't need any more fights with them right now.

Run, we have to run. If your life is in danger, you run no matter what.

You may have forced me off the battlefield, Alan, but I was the first to eliminate the target, so I think it's a draw.

If we ever fight again, it'll be different.

Alan Lake.

Oh, man! That was so painful. I didn't react in time for just a moment and ended up getting hit like that.

What? So, Steve, you're running away? All right, run, run, run. Your running away made me realise what kind of man you are. You had a good chance of winning, but you ran away. Although... a man like you can't win, much less me. You're a common coward who runs away at the sight of a serious threat. That's what you are.

Okay, meanwhile, I hear the sound of police sirens, which means it's time to get out of here. I still have a lot to think about.

***

When I finally got home, the first thing I did was go into the kitchen and lie down on the couch.

Yeah, Glover had me pretty banged up. Ruined my favourite shirt, the bastard. But Steve's the least of my worries right now. What's more important is that we're both on this mission.

Why? Why would the brass send people from two different squads on the same mission? And besides, these two squads can't stand each other. Why did that happen? They shouldn't have let this happen. Are they really trying to get us together on purpose? Do they want us to kill each other? It can be allowed, but still...

It's all very strange.
