Chapter 3: chance encounter
Oceana starred at the unfamiliar environment, a small groan couldn't help settling on her lips all she remembered was knocked out on her way home. The neighborhood she lived in wasn't the safest yet she had stayed there all her life with her old grandma for seven years till the latter died and a decade later she was still inhabiting the run down neighborhood which was mostly occupied by the lowest of the lows.
Had she been abducted? She couldn't help her thoughts however the doors were soon pushed open revealing a man with a squared face, a scar ran down his cheeks, an ugly one which would make children cry yet his face held a bashful smile which looked even scarier than a frown.
"Why did you bring me here"Oceana asked, it was obvious she knew him and she wasn't pleased to see him either
"You haven't fulfilled your end of the bargain"he smiled however that smile didn't reach his eyes "I quit the job already" she said indifferently and the man laughed
"You do not want to offend me girl"Pat chuckled and she rolled her eyes
"I don't do the job no more, accept that" she frowned clearly losing her patience "quite feisty as the rumors about you, still you should weigh your options you just might not leave here alive"pat smiled even more
He wanted to see how much she could hold on
A day had passed and she was only able to wake up now, he glanced at her face
She was beautiful with an oval face which still had some baby fat, her eyes were the most striking red like a furnace which reflected her fiery personality.
"Pat!" A deep voice called and pat glanced at her briefly before heading out and locking the door, he had a lot of time to tease her and make he do his bidding
Oceana on the other one was never one to wait on her doom, she climbed the walls with greatly difficulty and scaled the window out.
She breathed a sigh of relief, having evaded a difficult situation
she began to walk through the darkness, she fiddled with her old worn out phone she frowned slightly seeing it was out of battery
Glancing at the unfamiliar environment she couldn't help but frown even more
She scanned the area sure she hadn't been out here and had no idea where this was and with the phone dead there was no one to contact
Even if the phone was on, who would she call?
The only contact she had was of her clients who paid her to work
She didn't even have that woman's number
She sighed helplessly as she continued to walk, she could find her way if she continued to press on
She could eventually sight some post guards or officers on late night duty.
Memories of the past couldn't help flooding into her brain, the wrinkled face of her grandma. A kind and warm woman with a fiery temper, she never tolerated the gossipy neighbors who talked down at her granddaughter
She was like a mother hen extremely protective of her granddaughters feelings, raising her meticulously with outmost care, She was a light in Oceana's darkest days
She had been the only family Oceana had even till date her grandma was the only person she held dear
The only person who could fight for her without any regrets, she had heard people say she looked like her grandma yet her grandma would always argue she looked like her great grandmother who was said to have striking beautiful red eyes
She could vividly remember her grandmother being carefree and clumsy most times like a child
Yet she was loving and caring to her young granddaughter till she was ruthlessly taken away by illness….
"You... where are you headed so late" Maleek pointed his flashlight at her and she furrowed her brows at the stranger who had rudely interrupted her train of thoughts
"X…..road"she replied and the young man furrowed his brows
"It's far away from here, you'll have to catch the train….. you can't reach by foot" he advised and she clenched her jaw
She wasn't fond of sleeping out
Several years of hardship had made her yearn the comfort of her bedroom and her bed
"I can manage" she gritted her teeth
"You can't get there by foot" maleek urged her
"Can I lend a phone?"she asked and Maleek glanced at the cottage behind him which had a lights shimmering out of it
"My mom may be out soon... Be quick"he said as he took out his phone and handed it to Oceana, she took the phone and fell into deep thoughts
Who could she call?
Remembering a string of numbers she had seen in the school's notice board, she dialed it
"Hello who's this"Olivia asked and Oceana sighed "Oceana Lyndon" she replied and there was silence on the other end
Olivia was shocked, she glanced over at Tika who was running late night doing some assignments "what's wrong?"Tika glanced as she glanced at Olivia
"Is everything okay?"Olivia asked curiously, she was even more curious how Oceana had gotten her number "I'm stuck in west road, do you live nearby?" Oceana asked and Olivia bit her lip "i live in the south of west road" Olivia replied stiffly, she wasn't scared but visibly shaken at Oceana's call "can I stay over, I was kidnapped….. I'll leave at dawn" Oceana voice was low however her words were conveyed clearly to Olivia "I'm sorry….." Olivia inhaled deeply, she wanted to hang up. She really wanted the conversation to end quickly
"Oooh" Oceana sighed, she really had no hopes on a stranger aiding her however it was never bad to try. She decisively hung up and handed the phone back to maleek
"Were you really kidnapped" he asked "yea"she nodded and maleek blinked "come I'll sneak you into my room but you have to leave by dawn"maleek pointed out and she clenched her jaw, she wasn't one to trust people especially men however desperate times called for desperate measures, if she was caught by that man. She didn't dare imagine what he'll do to her
Hence with those thought she followed maleek through the back door and climbed the stairs to his room sneakily
"Boy! Won't you come down for dinner?" His mother called and maleek froze "I'll just clean up mom….. I'm feeling a bit cold" he replied as they rushed to his room
Once she was in she sighed in relief "stay put and don't make any noise"he reminded her and left the room after grabbing a coat, he had to join his family for dinner after taking out the trash. Dinner in the family was quite abundant and with a lot of kids it was always cheerful
Oceana sighed listening to the chaters around her, she had once dreamed of this kind of life she had once wanted a family as warm as this but all those things weren't reserved for a person like her they were in fact things she could never have and never dream of hence it didn't hurt
The yearning had long vanished all that was left was void., she slowly fell asleep listening to the chatter downstairs
"Who was it?"Tika asked curious as to why Olivia looked shaken. Olivia's temper was out of this world and being shaken over a call was unheard of and nearly impossible however at the moment Olivia was visibly shaken as she fought her internal demons
"It was oceana" Olivia replied and Tika raised a brow "I never knew you all were close"Tika replied as she put down her pen and turned her attention to Olivia. If her memory serves her right Oceana hadn't been in class and she was genuinely curious
"She said she was kidnapped and wanted to know if we live close by so she could stay over... I have no idea how she got my number and with so many student around here how can I?" Olivia sighed heavily, she felt so guilty and it couldn't be helped "it's not your fault you know"Tika assured her " weren't you the one playing righteous" Olivia glared at her "didn't you say Hades is tryna get into Tristan Lyndon's good books?" Tika asked clearly unamused "I really thought you'd want her over like a knight in shining armor" Olivia chuckled "I've decided it's oceana Lyndon's poor fate... I won't burn bridges for a stranger" Tika rolled her eyes as she grabbed a bottle of flavored milk her favorite "You're heartless" Olivia yawned "Aren't we on the same boat?" Tika sneered, she didn't want to linger on the topic much hence she delved into her work still she couldn't help apologizing continuously to Oceana in her heart
They were all still so young and on the path of figuring their life purposes and she couldn't sabotage the future of her man out of mere guilt. Hades had great prospects in soccer and he was destined to make it big…. If he could get the support of the Lyndon's his opportunities were unlimited. With this thoughts nothing else mattered to her however Olivia covered herself in her blanket feeling disappointed and disgusted at the latter.
The next morning Oceana was woken up by maleek "freshen up quickly I'll get you breakfast" he said to her as he then handed over his sisters clothes. "Thank you" she said to him as she then headed to the bathroom while he walked downstairs
The house was silent filled with the occasional sounds of snoring and faint muffled breathes maleek wasn't a great cook however he could make sandwiches hence he opted to make some and then he made some chocolate tea just how his siblings liked it then he headed up to his room
"What are you doing here!" Maleek frowned at the intruder his younger brother Tahir "you sneaked a girl home" Tahir sneaked seeing this as the perfect opportunity for payback, his eyes conveyed the words wait till mom finds out "You've just seen a ghost yet you dare speak rashly aren't you scared of death" maleek chuckled and Tahir was taken aback glancing back at the room it was devoid of life Tahir was genuinely creeped out he wasn't one to fancy the thoughts of ghosts "did..... I just...… see a gh....ghost!" Tahir paled "go to bed quickly before the ghost gets angry"maleek patted his brothers shoulder and with the distance screech of a crow Tahir paled even more as he ran off to his room
Maleek sighed as he walked in and locked the door "I didn't know it was him" she said as she crawled out from under the bed, seeing her like this he sighed
She was quite short and skinny with little curves and a full chest those blood red eyes were enchanting like they could capture one's soul she was beautiful with chubby cheeks and for someone who wasn't fond of women maleek couldn't help but blush
" your breakfast" he put the tray down and she dug in having been out for a whole day she was hungry hence she ate quickly, he watched her intently as she devoured the meal
"Thank you"she wiped her lips once she was done and stood up to leave, he glanced at her a small chuckle escaping his lips as he then led her downstairs he kept the used dishes and led her out of the house through the back door " the train station is a long walk from here" maleek informed her as he led her away his eyes scanned the area
It was still dark hence there were few people around. "Thank you" she couldn't help thanking him more and he smiled warmly at her. After a few minutes of walking they alas arrived the train station he bought her a ticket to Boston "Here" he handed her a handwritten note in it was his number which was written in good handwriting. "Take care..... call me when you arrive" he waved and then walked away seeing her get into the train. He stood a safe distance where he watched her for a few minutes before walking back home.
The atmosphere at home was warm, his mother went about breakfast while his siblings began their daily preparations for the day
All seven siblings glanced at him briefly and went about their own things only Tahir had an awkward look on his face, he glanced at Maleek with a complicated look and maleek chuckled "go help your father work on the farm" his mother frowned seeing him standing there doing nothing "I have to go to work" he argued and his mother frowned irritably "you make some money and now your forgetting your old man!" His mother snapped "just go help dad" Romani sighed as she prepared her one year old Amari for school "if you don't go we won't eat" ima sighed as she stared at her big brother with no other choice maleek left the house "mom you don't have to call us over all the time" Nura commented and their mother safiya glared at her "now I can't call you over but you all can come free load right" safiya snapped "mom!" Omar frowned "go join your brother to work all of you!" Safiya snapped " I still have to get the kids ready" Tanya sighed and safiya glared at her "we'll join him you girls can do your thing" Zakari said as he glanced over at his younger brothers "I'm not built for hard labor" Zayn grunted however he was pulled out by Omar and zakari pulled Tahir who seemed rather off all morning. "Once we leave it'll be just you and your husband" Romani said to her mother however safiya wasn't bothered she wanted the free loaders out of her house quickly.
