Chapter 18: I think you are beautiful
They walked into the building, it was really a merriment spot. It looked like a pub, there were not just only witchers, but there were also mages here.
"Do you see any of the 'fresh witchers'?" Hal asked.
"No..." Gideon trailed off.
"Let's go sit over there," Luisa suggested and went to sit on a pub stool, a table in front of her as about six stools surrounded it, the boys joined as well.
Not too long, two witchers in their protege stage walked up to them, a flagon in their hands with a couple of glasses.
"Hey, my fellow protege witchers, you trio must be Luisa, Gideon and Hallard," one of the witchers started, guessing their names correctly and respectively.
"I'm Seraphim and my pal here is Luthor, hope you don't mind if we sit with you guys, we haven't really welcomed you properly. Let's drink to celebrate your success," the one named Seraphim continued and without waiting for the trio to respond, they sat themselves down and started pouring the drinks.
"C'mon, have a glass...all of you. A toast, to brotherhood," the other witcher, Luthor said. They cheered and drank, it was the first time any of the trio had a taste of alcohol -It wasn't bad at all.
Seraphim started to pour another;
"May I join your merriment?" a voice requested, it was that mage from the lab when they were about to undergo the trial of the grasses.
Carter Arthur.
A small smile hung on his lips at Luisa.
"No, buzz off. Witchers only," Seraphim objected. Carter was about to leave when...
"Stay. We need someone to fill the extra stool," Luisa offered and the other witchers looked at her puzzled as Carter took his seat besides her.
"We or you. If you badly want someone to fill in the extra stool then let me beckon on a witcher," Seraphim responded.
"Is it just me or are the witchers and mages of kimoira kind of divided. Or is it just you who have a problem with this mage?" Luisa asked sardonically.
"It's just him," Luthor exposed his friend, earning a glare from Seraphim.
"Luisa? I guess you are as feisty as they say. To think you volunteered (Claps)... I'm impressed," Seraphim resorted.
"I guess I'm popular," Luisa replied.
"So how do you feel being the only female witcher?" Luthor added.
"For now... you forgot to add for now. It feels great," Luisa answered.
"Very peculiar," Carter added.
"So how did you end up in kimoira, Hallard?" Seraphim asked.
"Uh...well. The story is very unpleasant. I was taken against my wish. But now that I think about it, I'm glad I was abducted, I was a homeless street kid, maybe I would still be that if I hadn't be taken," Hallard explained and Seraphim patted Hal's shoulder very hard.
"There's nothing unpleasant there. Not all of us volunteered like Luisa, most of us here were taken against our wish. We're not like the mages, they have like a thousand lines of volunteers waiting to be chosen to participate in the trainings as it's like a piece of cake." Seraphim responded.
"It's not as easy as you think or say. Our trainings might not be as brutal as yours but it doesn't mean it's a piece of cake. We do physical trainings like you guys, sometimes we stay in the meditation room for days without food or water, learning how to rely on only our natural energy even if you are just a human.
"And you guys were taught like what...thirty spells. We mages have to learn more than a hundred including white magic, dark and forbidden magic even after you finish the trainings," Carter elaborated.
"Wow, that's a lot of dedication," Hallard responded.
"And I'm not done listing the complete trainings yet, so it's not a piece of cake," Carter added. Although being human, everyone has a natural energy you can cling onto, it's just that the more powerful the creature the greater the energy.
"Well, kimoira can't function well without both the witchers and the mages. What about you Gideon?" Luisa asked, ending the argument that was about to spew.
Luisa has noticed the changes in Gideon, he wasn't that douchebag towards her anymore but it didn't mean she was on good terms with him. She just doesn't have the ability to trust any vampire, no matter how nice he may appear now.
She talks with him with her guards on. She wondered how he managed to get here, there weren't a lot of vampires here... like always, the human population was higher.
"My family gave me up. I was useless and a threat to their bloodline," Gideon started.
"Why?" Hal asked.
"Even though I had the eyes, the fangs and speed, I didn't have the ability to ingest blood. I hated the taste and I wasn't as strong as an average vampire was supposed to.
"My strength was almost at the same level as the humans and my parents were embarrassed of me. They sold me off to the witchers to at least put me to good use with the money they'll get in return," Gideon concluded.
"Wow, a vampire that hates blood. Now that's also peculiar. So what are you going to do now that you're a witcher?" Luthor asked.
"Nothing, they didn't need me. So they are as dead to me as I am dead to them," Gideon answered, taking in his drink in one go.
Done drinking, Luisa decided to retire to bed as it was already late. Carter offered to accompany her and she allowed him. They got to the building where the apartments for the protege witchers were located.
"So... what does it feel like being a witcher?" Carter asked when they had gotten to the door leading to Luisa's room.
"Well...when I finally recovered from the trial of the grasses. I felt stronger, invincible and I knew something changed in my body, as I can do things I couldn't do before, like this..." she trailed off, raising her hands up, a blue energy enveloped it.
"And it changes it's color and aura according to the type of energy you are using, whether dark or pure energy. Things also changed physically for me as you can see. But...it really doesn't change how I feel or think, to me... I'm still the same girl." she ended and saw that Carter's blue eyes were just trained on her so intently, a smile on his face as he watched her being lost in her own world.
"What?" she asked opening her door preparing to get in.
"I think you are beautiful," he said. They held each other's gaze for a while.
"Thank you. Goodnight," Luisa responded indifferently.
"Goodnight," he replied and she shut the door.
'I think you are beautiful, why did I say it like that? She is beautiful. I should have simply said, you are beautiful...stupid, stupid,' Carter scolded himself.
...
The next day morning...
Luisa had just finished taking her bath. She had got to agree with that airhead, Hal. It does feels good to have your own room and bathroom, it wasn't as large and luxurious as Zeke's but it was okay.
She quickly got dressed as Zeke was waiting for her right outside her door. She opened the door when she was done and walked out.
"Is that really all you have?" Zeke questioned sarcastically.
"I really love this," Luisa argued.
She had gotten so used to trousers and shirt, that when they were given a wardrobe change, she didn't pick a single gown among her clothes, only shirts and female trousers, the only gown she had was the one Zeke bought for her.
"Wear the one I bought for you," he said.
"It's in need of laundry," She informed.
"Then we'll have to get you some clothes," he stated and Luisa smiled.
"Oh, I have such a caring mentor," she responded.
"I don't care about you, I just don't want my protege looking like a beggar,"he replied not sugar coating his words at all.
"Ouch!" Luisa voiced, hoping he only meant half of that.
"Besides you'll repay me with the bonuses assigned to you as a protege," he announced.
"What? You can't do that. I didn't ask for new clothes," she protested.
"Don't forget you promised you'll pay me back once you earn your first coin," he reminded and she gasp.
"I can't believe you still remember that and I said when I earn my first coin as a witcher not with my protege bonuses," she defended herself.
"Okay, I'll wait till then. Just so you know, you owe me a bag of silver coins," he grinned.
"That much?!" Luisa exclaimed.
"(Sighs)...It's indeed true that people make promises they can't fulfill in their times of need. You are lucky I didn't charge you with gold coins. You know, as a witcher you need to examine the financial status of your clients before charging and also depending on the kind of monster in question," he replied.
"(Scoffs)...Promises they can't fulfill? What do you still even need that money for? You're so petty, tsk," Luisa told, jokingly pouting her lips, but seriously he wouldn't even feel any lose if she didn't pay him... but then, she did promise.
"(Chuckles)...I was just fooling you about the clothes. What a gullible little shortie," Zeke smirked. "And...You don't really need to pay that money back," he added.
"Really?!" Luisa exclaimed again.
"Yes" He replied.
"You really don't have to, I promi-"
"I said you don't have to, shortie," he cuts her off.
"Thank you," she appreciated, she was really grateful for everything he has done and is doing for her.
They got into Zeke's carriage and started to leave kimoira.
"Are we going to stop by your house?" Luisa asked.
"Yes, I'm taking you to a place, after that we'll get the clothes before we go to my house," Zeke replied.
"What will your workers think? What will lady De'laurae think? The last time they saw me I had green eyes now i'm going with gold eyes, how are you going to explain to them, you know they might say you are a bad god father for letting your god daughter become a witcher." she mentioned.
"Do you really care what they think? I don't care what they think and I owe no one any explanation. So don't get yourself worked up on that, you owe no one an explanation...Well myself as an exemption," he answered with a smirk.
Luisa shook her head at him;
"So where are we headed to mentor?" Luisa asked.
"I made you a promise right? I'm going to fulfill it today," he recalled and Luisa smiled at him remembering the promise.
"You really meant that?" she asked.
"How do you expect me to fall out of love for you when you act like this," she muttered to herself but he heard her clearly.
"I don't expect you to fall out that easily, I can be very charming, it's up to you to resist. Because once you fall for me, there is hardly a way out," he replied half serious, half teasingly.
"(Huffs)...How do you expect me to fall out when you keep saying things like that?" she responded turning towards the window and Zeke grinned.
'You are just a child and you don't understand your feelings yet, you'll get over it soon,' Zeke thought.
The carriage finally came to a stop in front of a beautiful mansion. The coachman opened the door for them as usual. They were welcomed by the butler, who was an elf and he directed them to the lord of the house who was in his drawing room.
"Master Zeke," the man welcomed Zeke.
"And you must be Luisa, Zeke told me a lot about you and I have been eager to see you," the man added.
The man was tall and good looking, he was an high elf who was well off and affluent. A young elf girl, a little older than Luisa walked in with a tray, on top of it were tea cups and a kettle. By her dressings she looked well off, who was she?
"Master Zeke," the girl welcomed excitedly, dropping the tray of tea to hug Zeke. Luisa's eyes widened a little at the girl's sudden actions.
"I came to serve the tea myself when I heard you were here," she told. Zeke hugged her back. They seemed to be fond of each other.
"Lindsey, act like a proper lady for once," the elf man scolded and the girl stopped hugging Zeke.
"(Laughs nervously) Sorry father," she replied.
'Father?' Luisa thought.
"Where are my manners? Luisa meet Maximilian reign, leader of the high elves council and his daughter, Lindsey reign. Maximilian and Lindsey reign, meet Luisa Multon," Zeke introduced.
"Nice to meet you," the girl said to Luisa with a wave.
"It's an honor to meet you two as well," Luisa smiled. She felt a strange sense of happiness to be among elves again, it's been so long.
