"Of course, it should! S.H.I.E.L.D. has been protecting the world!"
Carter replied immediately, her tone firm. "Even though Hydra has infiltrated it, once we remove them, S.H.I.E.L.D. can return to its original state!"
Maverick gave a faint smile. "I recruited a Kazakh informant recently. He's an eighth-level S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, but he's also a Hydra operative—codename Clairvoyant. According to him, at least 30% of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s leadership consists of Hydra's inner circle."
"Thirty percent? That's impossible!" Carter exclaimed, her shock evident. "Is this S.H.I.E.L.D. or Snake Shield?"
"Operation Paperclip—you're familiar with it."
Maverick leaned back, his tone calm yet cutting. "That program allowed Hydra operatives to infiltrate the Strategic Science Corps. S.H.I.E.L.D. isn't just a successor to the Corps; it's also Hydra's nest."
Carter's face fell. "How could this happen? I didn't see it—none of us did."
"S.H.I.E.L.D. can't be saved in its current form," Maverick said bluntly. "It must be dismantled. That's the only way to truly eliminate Hydra."
"But the skilled agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. are still worth saving. The world needs a global defense organization," he added.
Carter hesitated. "How do we rebuild without repeating the same mistakes?"
"We need a visionary leader to rally the loyal agents, root out Hydra, and dismantle the old system," Maverick explained. "Then, we create something entirely new."
"You mean a new S.H.I.E.L.D.?" Carter asked cautiously.
"No," Maverick said firmly. "A fresh institution. One that's transparent, inclusive, and free from paranoia—or Hydra. People like Nick Fury? They've done enough. It's time for them to step aside. I intend to clean house, Carter."
Carter fell silent, considering his words. Finally, she asked, "Do you plan to control this new organization?"
"No. It'll be a cooperative effort," Maverick replied. "The Council of Blood is willing to provide funding and talent. Everything I've done so far has been to safeguard my people, as you well know."
"I do," Carter admitted. "That's why I've been managing the Council of Blood Group for you."
"I'd like to meet this Clairvoyant," she added.
Maverick nodded. "I'll arrange it."
"Thank you." Carter hung up the phone. Moments later, a nurse burst into the room, her excitement palpable.
"Ms. Carter! Captain America—he's waking up!"
"Really?" Carter stood abruptly, joy lighting up her face. Then her expression dimmed. Steve waking now might not be the blessing it seemed.
Why does the blond, hammer-wielding man call himself Thor? Why did aliens invade a small town in New Mexico? Why is the military gathered there? And why is Iron Man getting beaten up again?
The answers lie in the upcoming blockbuster: Thor!
The promotional tagline was standard fare, but the 30-second trailer was anything but. It showcased agents battling Frost Giants, Iron Man clashing with the Destroyer, and the terrifying destruction wrought by war descending from the heavens—all capped by the obliteration of a small town.
The internet was ablaze with reactions:
"Aliens? For real?"
"I thought this was just starting production—how do they already have footage?"
"Propaganda? Or is this based on real events?"
"Fake! There's no way this is real."
"But Iron Man's in it! Maybe it's legit?"
"If it's true, we demand answers from the government!"
As the chatter grew, Maverick smirked. His phone buzzed, and Nick Fury's unmistakable growl came through.
"Maverick, what the hell are you doing? Do you know how much effort went into keeping this quiet?"
"I'm preparing the public," Maverick replied coolly. "Do you really think alien invasions are a one-time thing?"
Fury's tone shifted. "What do you mean, a one-time thing?"
"Haven't you heard? Odin is in the Odinsleep, and Thor hasn't returned. Something's brewing in Asgard, and Earth is on its own," Maverick explained.
Fury was silent for a beat before saying, "Even so, revealing this will cause widespread panic!"
"It's just a movie, Fury. It's not that serious," Maverick said dismissively. "Deny it if you want, but when the next invasion happens, you'll have no leg to stand on."
Fury sighed. "Fine. Consider us even for the last favor. But the fallout with the government and military? That's on you."
"Noted."
Maverick hung up and turned to Lilith. "Have this movie ready for release in two months. Use real footage for the battles, and I'll handle the script."
Lilith raised an eyebrow. "What about the cast? Anyone specific in mind for the lead?"
"Have Daisy play herself. For the rest, find actors who look the part," Maverick instructed.
Lilith nodded. "And the government pushback?"
"The military won't interfere—they owe me. As for the government, money talks. This movie's going to shatter box office records," Maverick said confidently.
Director George entered Maverick's office, looking weary.
"Mr. Cassain," George began, "the city has approved Damon as the driver for the Nemesis Armor. Can the Osborn Group deliver it immediately?"
Maverick smiled. "The armor is ready. Pay up, and it's yours."
George sighed in relief. "Good. We need it now more than ever. Speaking of which, can you help us track down Wilson Fisk? He's flooding the streets with enhanced drugs."
"You can't find him because a lot of powerful people are protecting him," Maverick explained.
George frowned. "Why would they do that?"
"They want his research on human enhancement to succeed," Maverick replied. "If you want to clean up New York, you'll need to hit the gangs hard—no half-measures. Bring in superheroes to lead the charge, set a deadline, and clear the city."
George considered the idea. "It might work. I'll take it to the mayor."
"By the way, is Gwen around? I'd like to see her," George added.
Maverick smiled slyly. "She's in the lab. Go ahead."
When George entered the lab, he found his daughter chatting with Peter Parker, their body language unmistakably close. His eyes narrowed, and his hand twitched toward his holster.
"Dad?" Gwen asked, startled.
"Peter," George said darkly, "you've got some explaining to do."
Peter gulped. "Uh... hi, sir?"
