Chapter 58: Chapter 70 - Soon
On the Internet, the trailer for Thor had everyone talking. A reporter even tracked down Tony Stark to ask if the movie was based on real events and if Iron Man had been knocked out again. Stark's response? He walked off, visibly annoyed, his face grim.
The reporters didn't give up. They approached the military and the government, but their inquiries were met with the same stonewalling. Officials neither confirmed nor denied anything, pretending they hadn't heard the questions.
This evasive attitude only fueled speculation. Many began to believe the movie might be based on true events, and the buzz around Thor reached a fever pitch. The anticipation for its release skyrocketed, making it a blockbuster even before it hit theaters.
While the Internet fixated on Thor, New York City was dealing with something far more sensational. To restore order after months of chaos, Commissioner George initiated a citywide crackdown on crime. It was a seven-day operation led by superheroes, designed to strike hard and fast against criminal elements.
At any other time, such a move might have been criticized as overreach, but after the violence of recent months, New Yorkers were desperate for change. The citizens overwhelmingly supported the crackdown, eager to reclaim their city.
With the public's backing, the operation began. Sin Buster led a team of superheroes, dismantling several major gangs, confiscating illegal drugs and weapons, and arresting scores of criminals. The swift success electrified the public, earning praise for the police department and turning Sin Buster into a household name.
In a shadowy mansion upstate, Kingpin—Wilson Fisk—watched the news and chuckled darkly. "A crackdown? Bold move. But it's only a good idea until it's pushed too far. Let's see how they handle a little nudge."
Wesley, his right-hand man, asked, "What's your plan?"
Kingpin's lips curled into a sinister smile. "Make sure our people draw this out. Seven days isn't enough. We need it to last at least a month."
"A month?" Wesley raised an eyebrow. "That'll drive the gangs to the edge."
"Exactly," Kingpin said, his voice dripping with malice. "When they're desperate, they'll have no choice but to come to me. I've always been their emperor. I was before, I am now, and I will be in the future."
Wesley's tone sharpened. "You're planning something big, aren't you?"
Kingpin's grin widened. "After all this time, you think I've been idle? Those fools think I'm their pawn, but they're my pieces. Even that so-called Council of Blood doesn't take me seriously. But they'll learn. Soon, everyone will."
He gestured dramatically, his eyes gleaming like a reptile's. "Get ready, Wesley. Our kingdom is about to rise."
Wesley's pale-yellow eyes glinted in the dim light as he shouted, "Long live the Lizardmen!"
The crackdown's initial success boosted New York's morale. Law and order improved dramatically, and the police were showered with accolades. Emboldened, a city councilman proposed extending the operation to a full month, aiming to completely eliminate New York's criminal underworld.
At first, Commissioner George hesitated, wary of overreaching. But intoxicated by victory and pressured from above, he reluctantly agreed. The crackdown was extended to 30 days.
The reaction from the gangs was explosive. Many fled the city, but others chose to fight back. They bombed police stations, ambushed patrols, and committed bold robberies. Overnight, the restored order unraveled, and chaos returned, worse than before. The escalating violence left both police and gang members dead, plunging New York into an urban warzone.
Amidst the turmoil, Maverick Cassain, head of the Council of Blood, shook his head as he put down the newspaper. "They should have listened to me. This aggressive approach was bound to backfire."
Still, Maverick showed no interest in intervening. "The world ending? I'll step in. Humanity's extinction? I'll care. But this? Not my problem. Besides, there are more interesting distractions…"
Turning to Lilith, his trusted lieutenant, Maverick said, "Have Spider-Man keep an eye on Commissioner George. He's no use to us dead."
Lilith raised an eyebrow. "Aren't you worried they'll argue?"
Maverick smirked. "What's a little bickering between a father-in-law and a son-in-law?"
He strode to the window, looking out over Manhattan. "Storm's coming. Let's make sure our insurance policies are in place."
As the crackdown dragged on, the gangs found themselves cornered. Desperate, they turned to their former leader, Kingpin. An invitation was sent to every major gang in New York, and despite their distrust, they all attended. Kingpin was their last hope.
At the gathering, Kingpin didn't appear immediately. Instead, Wesley entertained the guests with drinks. The gang leaders drank freely, venting their anger at the police and swearing revenge. But as the night wore on, they began to collapse, one by one.
When Zach, the boss of Brooklyn, woke up hours later, he found himself transformed. His skin was green and scaly, his body grotesquely swollen. A long, muscular tail extended from his back. "What the hell is this?" he roared, his voice guttural.
Kingpin stepped forward, now fully transformed into a towering, four-meter-tall lizard-like monstrosity. "Welcome to the family," he said with a toothy grin.
Zach's outrage turned to confusion and then primal exhilaration as the serum twisted his mind. Around him, the other gang leaders were undergoing similar transformations, their humanity slipping away.
Kingpin watched with satisfaction. The lizard serum, developed using Spider-Man's blood, was a resounding success. It not only enhanced physical strength and healing but also rewired the mind, fostering loyalty to their new "clan."
"From now on," Kingpin declared, "we are one people. New York will belong to the Lizardmen!"
Cheers erupted from the transformed gang leaders. Wesley distributed cases of lizard serum, instructing them to spread it among their followers. In seven days, Kingpin promised, they would unleash their ultimate plan—to turn all of New York into lizardmen and establish their kingdom.
The plan might have worked if not for an unexpected intervention. On the fifth night, Sin Buster and his allies raided Zach's hideout. The team quickly discovered the horrifying truth as Zach and his men transformed into lizardmen before their eyes.
"What the hell are these things?" Sin Buster shouted as the grotesque creatures attacked.
Electro countered with bolts of lightning, only to watch in disbelief as the lizardmen's wounds healed almost instantly. "These guys are tougher than any enhanced humans I've faced," he muttered grimly.
The battle spilled into the streets, where police officers tried in vain to contain the chaos. The lizardmen's strength and regenerative abilities made them nearly unstoppable. Sin Buster fought valiantly, but even he struggled against their overwhelming numbers.
"This is only the beginning!" Zach roared, his monstrous form towering over the battlefield. "Soon, all of New York will be ours!"
