Chapter 60: Chapter 72 - Carnage
After entering the building, War Machine and the Peacekeeper split up to rescue survivors. Hearing a distant cry for help, War Machine flew toward the source. He arrived to find a group of gang members surrounding a woman with clear malicious intent.
Without hesitation, War Machine opened fire, eliminating the gang members in seconds. The woman gasped and shouted, "Thank you! Thank you!"
"You're welcome! Now get out of here!" he commanded, turning to look for others in need. But as he moved, the woman transformed into a lizard-like humanoid and struck him from behind with a powerful kick. War Machine stumbled and crashed to the ground.
In the city hall, Kingpin's bribery had turned many people into lizardmen, and this woman had been lying in wait to ambush any rescue efforts.
"Damn it!" War Machine cursed, rolling to dodge another attack. He retaliated with a barrage of gunfire. Another lizardman leaped from above, slashing his machine gun's connection with a claw and smashing War Machine's visor with the detached weapon.
Reacting quickly, War Machine raised his arm and fired a pulse cannon, sending the attacker flying. But more lizardmen swarmed in, overwhelming him.
Suddenly, six miniature missiles whizzed through the air, detonating amidst the lizardmen. Flesh and blood flew everywhere, but only those whose heads were destroyed stayed down. The others began regenerating almost instantly.
Tony Stark flew in, his arrival punctuated by music blasting from his suit's speakers. "I've been saying it for years—your suit's outdated," he quipped, firing an arc pulse to clear a path.
"And I've been saying yours is just a fancy toy," War Machine shot back, brushing debris off his armor.
"No heavy weapons," War Machine reminded him. "There are still survivors in city hall."
"Got it," Stark replied. He blasted a charging lizardman before continuing, "Let's clean this up quickly. I've got to rescue some cops next. Ungrateful as they are, the noble Iron Man never holds a grudge!"
War Machine smirked grimly. "Let's make it quick, then." He launched into the fray alongside Stark.
It took the duo several minutes to neutralize the remaining lizardmen. Just as they caught their breath, the Peacekeeper's voice crackled over their comms: "I'm being overrun! Need backup—there's too many of them!"
Tony laughed. "See? Everyone's wearing inferior suits. Hold tight; I'll handle the big guns."
War Machine rolled his eyes. "Your 'ultimate move' that's only good for one shot?"
"Better than having nothing to shoot at all," Stark retorted as he soared toward the Peacekeeper's location. His laser beam sliced through five lizardmen in one sweep. The rest hesitated but quickly rallied and charged again.
The three heroes fought together, the sheer volume of attackers forcing them to demolish parts of the building in the process. Despite their efforts, more lizardmen joined the fray, pushing them to their limits. Just then, a Quinjet appeared, unleashing gunfire that scattered the attackers.
Hawkeye and Black Widow rappelled down with a squad of heavily armed S.H.I.E.L.D. agents. "We're your reinforcements," Hawkeye shouted. "More are on the way!"
"We should evacuate the survivors and level this place," Stark suggested. "These lizardmen regenerate too fast. Blowing it all up is the safest move."
"Not an option," Natasha said firmly. "This is New York City Hall. We can't just destroy it."
"Great priorities," Stark muttered. "So we'll keep wasting time and risking lives instead?"
Before Natasha could respond, Hawkeye called out, "Lizardmen incoming! Everyone, get ready!"
"Take them down!" shouted a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent, and the battle reignited.

Meanwhile, at the police headquarters, explosions echoed through the air. Electro fired his railgun relentlessly, each coin-shaped projectile obliterating one or more lizardmen.
"Max, your popularity is going to skyrocket after this," Windstorm teased as he swept three lizardmen into the air with a gust.
Electro's face was grim. "I don't care about fame. I just want these things dead."
The number of lizardmen at the precinct far exceeded those at city hall, a testament to how much gang members hated the police. Spider-Man fought alongside them, delivering a flying kick to a lizardman before quipping, "Electro's got the cool moves. When does Spider-Man get his big dramatic attack?"
"Focus, Spidey!" barked Captain George, blasting a lizardman with his rifle. "We've got a job to do."
"Yes, sir!" Spider-Man saluted playfully before diving back into the fray.
The lizardmen soon realized they couldn't breach the defense line. "Electro, we know your weakness! You're just a glorified battery. How much juice you got left?" one of them taunted.
Electro laughed and ripped open his suit to reveal an arc reactor glowing on his chest. "Nice try. I've got a power source now, courtesy of Maverick."
The lizardmen snarled in frustration, but their rage was short-lived. Moments later, reinforcements arrived: a group of operatives from the Council of Blood, led by Blade himself. His signature sunglasses glinted as he fired a custom weapon, taking out a lizardman with a perfect headshot.
"Blade!" the officers and gang members shouted in unison.
"Looks like my reputation precedes me," Blade said coolly.
"No, they just recognize the sunglasses," Melinda, his deputy, teased. "Did Maverick really charge a million bucks for those?"
"Worth every penny," Blade said, taking out another lizardman. "They'll star in the next season of Blood Police."
With Blade's arrival, the tide turned. The officers and Council of Blood members pushed the lizardmen back, holding the line.

In another part of the city, a deformed mutant rampaged through the streets. A terrified shop owner cowered inside as the creature tore at the door. Just as it was about to break through, an electric dart struck its neck, sending it into spasms.
"Gross. Let's end this," Jessica Jones muttered, leaping off her glider to deliver a punch that sent the mutant flying. Trish followed up with machine gun fire, finishing it off.
"Stay inside," Trish called to the shop owner. "We'll handle this." The sisters sped off to the next crisis.
Not far away, Iron Fist and Daredevil were also battling mutants. "I hate that we're stuck on bicycles while everyone else has fancy gadgets," Danny grumbled.
"Focus on the fight," Daredevil replied, though his mind wandered to S.H.I.E.L.D.'s recent recruitment pitch.

At the Osborn Building, Agent Coulson confronted Maverick. "Why are so many resources being allocated here instead of helping the city?"
Maverick swirled his wine. "Think, Coulson. Kingpin hasn't shown himself yet. Doesn't that strike you as odd?"
"You think his target is here?" Coulson asked.
"I'm sure of it. He's after the Canary equipment," Maverick explained. "It's too valuable to let him have."
"Then destroy it," Coulson urged.
"Not happening," Maverick said firmly. "Relax. Kingpin won't take this building while I'm here."
Before Coulson could respond, trucks screeched to a halt outside, unloading a swarm of lizardmen. Kingpin stepped out last, raising his arms triumphantly. "Attack! Take the building and secure the equipment!"
"Been waiting for you," Frank Castle muttered, dropping bombs from above and turning the street into a warzone. Within minutes, half the attackers were eliminated.
Coulson grimaced at the carnage. "Is this how all your fights go?"
"When Frank's involved? Always," Maverick replied, watching the battle unfold.
