Chapter 21 - Car Sickness and Bad Luck
“…Dad..?”
The window of the car that had been blocking me and my sister opened.
“It’s been a while….daughters..”
“Have you decided to call us that now?”
I nonchalantly opened the car door and got into the back seat with my sister.
“Yes….we need to get used to it now…”
“But why did you come all the way here…? It takes several hours to get here.”
“No, I just had some work nearby.”
Dad started driving, and I fastened my seatbelt.
“…….”
“What…?”
“No, it’s just… something feels strange.”
My sister looked oddly at my chest area, but I stopped thinking about it and started chatting with Dad, whom I hadn’t seen in a while.
“How did you know we were here?”
“Well…..I went to Minyoung’s house, but you weren’t there, so I wandered around. Then, when I was about to call, I saw something white.”
“Sure, your hair definitely stands out, sis.”
“…..Should I dye it…?”
“No.”
At my sister’s curt rejection, I quietly closed my mouth.
“Haha… So, is there anything else you need to pack? If not, we can just head straight home.”
“I’m fine without anything.”
“Oh….me too, I guess?”
I was slightly bothered by not bringing motion sickness medicine, but I thought I’d be okay and leaned my head against the lightly vibrating window.
“…Ah.”
Come to think of it, I hadn’t told them that I wasn’t going to the counseling session. It wasn’t necessary to mention it, but if the counselor was waiting for me, that would be rather rude and inconsiderate.
*Ring-ring*
-Hello, is something wrong?
“Uh…not really…but I have something to deal with, so I don’t think I can make it to counseling today.”
-Oh…I’ll let them know. But I’m glad you called.
“Yes…?”
-There was something I couldn’t finish saying earlier…
“What….is it…?”
-Please don’t think about it too seriously…
“Okay………”
“What did they say?”
“………”
“Sis?”
“Is something wrong…? Should I pull over?”
As soon as I hung up, my sister, who had been watching me, asked seriously.
“……..They said….I’ll have my period next week…”
“Oh.”
“……….”
“Uh….uh…um….I’ll help you…! I’ll pack what you need and…how about you take off from your part-time job that day? Is it on the weekend?”
“Well….I’m not sure yet…it’s my first time, but…I’ll be fine. Don’t worry too much.”
“Got it….”
I patted my proud little sister on the head, who was already trying to take responsibility, and lightened the somber mood a bit.
“How’s Seo-ha doing?”
“Oh…..she’s doing great~ She’s walking around well now~ and she’s always toddling over to us, saying ‘Dad, Mom’…. hahaha…”
Dad’s previously complicated expression began to brighten up.
“Really? She must be growing up fast.”
“Of course! I also taught her to say ‘sister’ and ‘brother’…but she only says ‘sister’…”
“Our dad’s got so many daughters, really~”
“Hahaha… Well, it’s still going to take a while… So, why don’t you both rest?”
“I’m going to sleep.”
My sister said this and leaned her head against my shoulder.
“……..”
I gently placed my head on top of hers and closed my eyes. Feeling the stronger vibrations as we entered the highway, we spent several hours like that.
“Ugh….”
“Uh…sis…?”
I heard a small voice tickling my ear.
“…What…?”
“Are you okay…?”
I soon realized why my sister was worried. Reflected in the rearview mirror, my face was quite pale.
“…Huff….huff…”
“Ah….Dad..! Can you stop the car?!”
“Oh…oh…? Just a moment…”
Beyond the tall mountains outside the window, a bright red sun was setting.
“Urgh…bleeghhh….”
“……..”
I won’t go into detail, but we pulled over on an empty shoulder off the highway, and…well, you can imagine.
“Feeling better?”
After a while, my sister, who had been patting my back, cautiously asked.
“….Urgh….”
“Dad..! I’m going to the convenience store to get some water and medicine!”
My sister helped my limp body into the front passenger seat and dashed off to a nearby convenience store.
“….Sorry…I didn’t realize.”
“It’s fine…I didn’t mention it.”
Until now, my motion sickness was just mild nausea and dizziness, so I never told my family. But my sister, who always sat with me in the back seat, knew that I got a bit carsick.
“Ahhh…I’m going to die, I swear! This stupid body!”
“……What can you do… We can’t go back now, right?”
“Did Dad know?”
“The doctor calls sometimes.”
“But…we’re almost there now, aren’t we…?”
I reclined the seat a bit and looked outside. The view was very familiar and nostalgic. Many shops had their shutters down, and elderly people filled the dim sidewalks. Low-rise apartments and bright streetlights lined this small town.
“Ahh…..there’s nothing like Minyoung’s place.”
I downed a 500ml bottle of water and swallowed a pill.
Ten minutes later, the car stopped.
“We’re here….good job hanging in there.”
“Yeah….”
We arrived at a small apartment that bore the marks of enduring many years.
“We’re here.”
“It’s been a while, Mom!”
As soon as my sister opened the door and saw our mom through the inner door, she ran to greet her.
“Shhh…shhh…!”
“…Is someone sleeping?”
My sister asked cautiously, and Mom nodded quietly.
“…Hi, Mom…your daughter’s here.”
“Oh dear….oh dear…”
Mom, who had been dealing with my sister, heard my greeting and slowly approached to give me a tight hug.
“…What’s this about?”
“My son turned into my daughter, and that’s already hard enough…how much harder must it be for you….”
Pat…pat…
“……It’s embarrassing… Is Seo-ha in her room?”
I pointed to a closed door.
“Yeah…she went to bed right after lunch, so she should be waking up soon.”
“Oh~ Am I even going to get called ‘unnie’ by my youngest now?”
I lamented jokingly and grabbed the doorknob.
I opened the door. The scene was so different from the one I remembered. This was the room my sister and I used to share.
“………….”
Inside, a cute baby was sound asleep in a crib, breathing softly.
“…Heh…”
Squishy, squishy.
“Ugh…”
As I lightly pressed the baby’s soft cheeks with my thin fingers, her squishy cheeks sank in.
“…Cute, right? She’s your sister.”
“…She really is a cute little princess.”
“This is probably the first time you’re seeing her up close, isn’t it?”
“It is…I’ve only seen her in the incubator or in photos… Seeing her in person is completely different… The closest I ever got was when I woke up, wasn’t it…?”
I made a scissor shape with my fingers and gently poked Seo-ha’s cheeks.
“…Me too…”
My sister, who had been quietly watching from behind, whispered softly as she stepped forward. I slowly moved aside.
Squish.
Squish.
Squish-squish-squish-squish-squish-squish-squish-squish-squish-squish-squish-squish-squish-squish-squish-squish-squish-squish-squish-squish-squish-squish-squish-squish.
“….Oh…”
After a while, my sister, who had been busy playing with Seo-ha’s cheeks, let out a soft sound and pulled her hands away with a curious expression. The way she managed not to wake Seo-ha despite all that poking seemed like a talent in itself.
“…Huh…? What?”
My sister turned around, fixed her gaze on me, and strode over.
“Hold still.”
“Yes, ma’am.”
Then, for quite some time, my sister played with my cheeks.
“…..”
She squished both mine and Seo-ha’s cheeks, deeply serious, lost in thought.
“….Unnie.”
“Yeah?”
“It’s a tie.”
“……”
“Uu….mo…ther…”
While I was left speechless, Seo-ha woke up.
“Oh my~ Our princess is awake~?”
Mom naturally picked up Seo-ha and gently rocked her.
“Oh…Mom..! Let me! Let me hold her too!!”
My sister eagerly reached out, wanting to hold her younger sister.
“Alright…just be careful not to drop her.”
“…Gulp..”
“Support her head with one hand….”
As Mom carefully handed over Seo-ha, she adjusted my sister’s awkward grip.
“Uu…?”
“Come on…say ‘unnie’~! Say ‘unnie’!”
“Uh…hee…?”
“No! Say it properly! Unn-ie!”
“Un!hee!”
“…..Pfft….”
“I taught her before, and last time she really did say ‘unnie’ once, you know?”
“…I’m determined to get her to say it today.”
With a determined look, my sister carried Seo-ha into the living room.
“….Minyoung’s really grown up now…”
“She’s still a kid… A student’s hardly an adult.”
“Have you eaten anything?”
“No? Did you and Dad eat?”
“Of course not! Your dad was so excited about bringing his daughters over today that I couldn’t eat without him.”
“….”
I looked over at Dad, but he just turned his head away.
“Un-hee!”
“Ugh…no, that’s not it…”
My sister, sitting on the living room sofa, continued her challenge, staring into Seo-ha’s eyes.
“Should I try holding her?”
To be honest, I wanted to hold her at least once. At my cautious suggestion, my sister chuckled and handed Seo-ha over.
“Ah…hello…?”
“……U…ugh….ugh….”
“Oh…uh-oh…?”
Seo-ha’s bright expression quickly began to crumble into tears.
“Waahh!!”
“…….”
As soon as Seo-ha started crying, Mom rushed over and took her into her arms.
“She only….hates me…”
“….Sis…don’t be too sad…”
I lay pitifully on the sofa, lamenting my sad fate.
“Who made our princess cry~”
Seo-ha, now held by Mom, stopped crying like it was all a lie.
