Chapter 70: Hashirama, Madara, and Gen (Part 3/4)
"Is the plot finally starting?" Uchiha Gen murmured softly. Others might not understand the significance of Madara practicing stone skipping by the river, but he remembered. In the original storyline, the first meeting between Uchiha Madara and Senju Hashirama happened over skipping stones by a river.
By his calculations, the timeline lined up perfectly. The new year had just passed, and Madara had turned nine. In the original series, it was around this age when he first met Hashirama.
"This historic moment—I can't miss it," Gen thought to himself. He wasn't sure if Madara had already encountered Hashirama, but knowing about it and not getting involved would make him a failure as a transmigrator.
So, without caring about the shattered teacup on the ground, Gen rose to his feet and walked out of the clan compound. Once outside, he became a shadow darting swiftly between trees. His speed was astonishing.
Splash... Splash... Splash...
Flat stones skipped across the water, bouncing three times before sinking with a soft plop.
Madara stood on the riverbank with a dissatisfied expression. Picking up another stone, he grumbled, "Next time, I'll definitely make it across."
Whoosh...
Before he could throw, a stone flew past him, skipping across the river. It bounced three times before landing on the opposite bank with a crisp snap.
Madara turned to see a boy about his age maintaining a throwing posture. The boy wore a light greenish-white shirt with a triangular white scarf around his neck. His most striking feature was his bowl-cut hairstyle.
"Remember to tilt your throw slightly upward. That's the trick," the boy said with a warm smile.
Madara frowned and turned fully to face him. "I already know that. If I get serious, I can throw it across for sure. Who are you anyway?"
The boy put his hands on his hips and smiled. "Me? Right now, I'm your opponent in stone skipping. And I just made it across."
Madara clenched the stone in his hand and demanded, "I'm asking who you are!"
The boy chuckled, about to reply, when a stone suddenly flew past them at lightning speed. It skipped across the water, creating waves, and slammed into a tree on the opposite bank with a loud crack, snapping it in half.
"My, my, it seems I used a bit too much strength," said a voice as another figure emerged, laughing. Gen arrived just in time, catching his breath as he surveyed the scene.
Madara looked surprised and called out, "Gen, what are you doing here?"
Gen waved dismissively and walked over with a smile. "I wasn't in the best mood, so I came here for a walk. Seeing you two skipping stones, I thought I'd join in. Mind if I play?"
He turned to the other boy, studying him from head to toe. This must be the legendary Hashirama. His appearance matched the original—a bowl cut and simple clothes that looked incredibly plain. "Wow, he really does look this innocent. And this guy somehow defeated the Uchiha in the original story? Hard to believe," Gen thought.
Gen put on a bright smile and said, "Hi, I'm Gen. Starting today, I guess I'm your stone-skipping rival. Mind if I join in?"
The bowl-cut boy seemed surprised but didn't mind. With a cheerful grin, he replied, "Gen, huh? That's an unusual name. I'm Hashirama. I can't tell you my last name for certain reasons."
Madara, clearly annoyed, stepped forward and said, "Don't ignore me, you two! Hashirama, right? I'm Madara. And I also can't tell you my last name for certain reasons. Stone skipping, huh? Watch closely—I'll make it across this time."
Madara raised his hand, gripping the stone in a perfect shuriken-throwing stance, and let it fly.
Hashirama observed his movements and thought to himself, "That stance... It's definitely shuriken-throwing technique." He glanced at Gen, remembering the forceful throw earlier, which had left a deep impression on him.
Madara's stone skipped a few times but lost momentum just before reaching the opposite bank, sinking into the water with a soft plop.
He froze in place, maintaining his throwing stance, clearly frustrated.
Then he turned back abruptly, pointing dramatically at the other two. "You two idiots! Standing behind me on purpose to distract me, huh? I'm sensitive, okay? I can't even pee if someone's standing behind me!"
Gen rolled his eyes. "Yeah, sure. Blame the Earth's gravity while you're at it."
Hashirama, on the other hand, was startled and crouched down, hugging his knees with a dejected look. If this were an anime, there would be a dark shadow hanging over his head.
"I-I'm sorry," Hashirama muttered.
Madara hadn't expected such a reaction. Ignoring Gen, he tried to console the boy. "Hey, no need to get so down about it."
Hashirama lifted his head slightly and whispered, "I didn't realize I was such an annoyance." His posture sank even further.
Madara sighed and awkwardly rubbed his forehead. "Okay, fine. I'm sorry for overreacting. Happy now?"
Gen, meanwhile, watched the scene with amusement. "Wow, Uchiha Madara actually apologizing? Is this the legendary Hashirama effect?"
Hashirama's head sank even lower. "I didn't mean to upset anyone. To make up for it, I'm ready to be thrown into the river if you want."
Madara stood dumbfounded for a moment before bursting out, "What's wrong with you?! Do you even know how annoying you are?!"
Hashirama suddenly stood and smiled brightly. "But at least it's clear—I'm better at stone skipping than you!"
Madara's irritation flared. "You wanna be the stone I skip across the river?!"
"Oh no..." Hashirama quickly reverted to his dejected pose, crouching down again. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to upset you. Go ahead and throw me if you want. I'm ready."
Watching the future legends of the Warring States period act so ridiculous, Gen felt utterly entertained. "Seeing this in person is so much better than the anime," he thought.
Madara put his hands on his hips, exasperated. "You... You really are the most annoying person I've ever met."
Hashirama, however, subtly smiled and said in a mischievous tone, "Still, I hope you can at least manage to skip a stone all the way across."
"Get out of here!" Madara snapped, finally losing his temper.
"Wow, so the supposedly innocent Hashirama has a mischievous side. Guess even the sweetest characters have a dark streak," Gen mused internally.
Just as things seemed to settle, the three noticed something unusual—a ninja's corpse floating down the river.
"What's that...?" Madara muttered, his voice laced with suspicion. Gen and Hashirama also stepped forward, their expressions turning serious.
