Chapter 71: The Death of Senju Itama (4/4)
Senju Hashirama ran across the water to the corpse floating nearby, crouching down to examine it.
Madara narrowed his eyes, watching Hashirama walk effortlessly on the water's surface. A thought crossed his mind: "Walking on water... definitely a ninja."
A low voice spoke nearby. "Looks like a ninja to me," Gen said casually. Madara glanced at him but remained silent.
Hashirama inspected the body carefully, his tone somber as he said, "This place is about to become a battlefield. You two should leave now." He silently recognized the clan emblem on the body. "It's the Hagoromo Clan's symbol," he thought.
Standing up, Hashirama glanced back at the two boys and said, "Sorry, I have to go." He leapt to the opposite bank with ease, turning back to wave. "Goodbye, Madara, and you too, Gen. I'm glad I met you today."
Gen waved enthusiastically and shouted, "Hey, next time let's skip stones here again!"
Hashirama laughed, waved back, and walked away, his figure growing smaller in the distance.
When Hashirama's silhouette finally disappeared, Gen turned to see Madara lost in thought. Smiling, he asked, "What are you thinking about?"
Madara shook his head. "Nothing. Let's head back to the clan compound."
The two turned and leapt into the forest, quickly making their way home.
As they traveled, Madara broke the silence. "Why were you here in the first place?"
Gen shrugged. "I told you—I came to clear my head. The new year just passed, and I wanted some peace, but it's all about war again. Word is, we're fighting the Senju soon. Can't we have a break for once? Supposedly, it's all because of a newly discovered vine forest in the Hagoromo Clan's territory. The Senju attacked first, and we stepped in after. In the end, it's all about greed. Both sides want those vines. So much killing—it's really not peaceful at all."
Madara fell silent, then sighed deeply. "Will the wars ever end?"
Gen responded with his own question, "What do you think?"
Madara's eyes hardened with determination. "I believe that if there is enough power, the wars can end. I can unite all the clans and bring an end to the Warring States Era."
Hearing Madara's resolute tone, Gen gave him a thumbs-up. "I believe in you. You can definitely do it."
"Especially with your best friend, Hashirama," Gen thought to himself with a wry smile.
When they reached the clan compound, they were greeted by Uchiha Tajima, his face dark. Seeing the two returning together, his expression grew even sterner. "Where have you been? Don't you know the clan meeting is about to start?"
The two boys said nothing, knowing that arguing with Uchiha Tajima would only make things worse.
"Never mind. Follow me to the meeting," Tajima commanded, turning to leave. They quickly followed.
The meeting revolved around the upcoming war with the Senju and the Hagoromo Clan. Uchiha Tajima explained, "The Hagoromo Clan has a forest of vines that, when specially processed, can be infused with chakra to create durable armor. This is a rare and valuable resource that cannot fall into the hands of the Senju. Our first support unit has already been deployed and has clashed with the Senju. Now, let's discuss our strategy..."
The Uchiha leaders immediately began an intense discussion. True to his low-profile nature, Gen stayed silent, waiting for the meeting to end.
By the time the meeting concluded, the sun was setting. Gen parted ways with Madara and walked alone through the streets of the Uchiha compound. A faint memory stirred in his mind. "Wasn't there a war like this in the original story? I think Hashirama had a younger brother named Itama... Didn't he die in this war?"
Shaking his head, Gen dismissed the thought. "Well, I can't remember the details, so I'll just forget about it for now."
Back home, Gen sat down to eat a meal prepared by his young maid.
"You seem to be in a good mood today, Master," she said with a smile. She liked seeing this relaxed expression on his face.
Gen lightly tapped her on the head with his chopsticks and said, "Yeah, I feel like I'm about to witness history!"
Rubbing her head, the maid scooted a bit farther away, puzzled by his words. "What does he mean by witnessing history?"
---
Since the brief truce from the previous year, the Uchiha and Senju had resumed their long-standing feud. This time, the conflict revolved around the Hagoromo Clan's vine forest.
The Senju had initiated the attack, while the Uchiha claimed to be protecting the weaker Hagoromo Clan, who had allegedly offered the forest to the Uchiha in exchange for protection.
It was ironic—the Senju, who preached love, were the aggressors, while the proud Uchiha claimed to protect the weak. But regardless of how the story was spun, one thing was clear: the Hagoromo Clan was doomed, and no one cared about their fate.
In the Warring States Era, greed wasn't a sin—weakness was.
The war had been raging for over a month. One day, after finishing his training, Gen overheard loud voices from a table near a tavern window.
"I'm telling you, we scored big this time! Haha! Yesterday, while on a mission for the Hagoromo Clan, we ran into the Senju. They were weaker than us, and we killed them all. The last one standing was a kid named Senju Itama—Senju Butsuma's son! Haha! I wish I could see their faces now!"
Gen froze mid-step. Though he didn't recognize the Uchiha speaking, the man's crossed scars below his right eye left an impression.
After a moment of hesitation, Gen changed course, heading for the main family compound. Reaching Madara's room, he slid open the door and called, "Madara, are you here?"
No response. Closing the door, he turned to leave, only to spot a familiar figure approaching—Uchiha Izuna.
Gen hadn't seen Izuna in a while. He'd heard the boy had been undergoing intense training and had even gone on a few missions.
This time, Izuna's aura was noticeably different—more composed and serious. From his demeanor alone, Gen could tell the boy had killed before—likely more than ten people.
"You're looking for my brother?" Izuna asked.
Gen nodded.
"He left about half an hour ago. I don't know where he went."
"I see." Gen narrowed his eyes, then turned and left. He had a pretty good idea of where Madara had gone.
Izuna watched Gen's departing figure before turning toward his father's room.
From a distance, Gen glanced back, catching sight of Izuna entering Uchiha Tajima's chambers. A faint, unreadable smile crossed his face.
Activating the Flying Thunder God Technique, Gen vanished in a flash of light, heading toward the forest.
Halfway there, he caught sight of Madara moving swiftly through the trees. The two exchanged a glance before continuing side by side toward the familiar riverbank.
As they approached, they saw a lone figure sitting quietly by the water, radiating a deep sense of melancholy. Together, they stepped out of the forest and made their way toward him.
