Chapter 338: Chapter 338: The Disguise of Self-Disclosure

What is a hero?

In time, even the villagers will gradually forget their founding Hokage, let alone Konoha's White Fang.

Faced with the challenge of managing Hatake Sakumo, the Third Hokage chose a calculated approach. Without direct confrontation or overt hostility, he employed a strategy of cold storage. By sidelining Sakumo and withholding opportunities for him to achieve merit or recognition, the Third Hokage effectively neutralized any potential influence Sakumo might have.

Want to be Hokage? The Third Hokage thought, Isn't that a little presumptuous?

Compared to Shimura Danzo's underhanded tactics of false accusations and public manipulation, the Third Hokage's method was more subtle but equally effective. It protected his reputation while gradually eroding Sakumo's. Time would do the rest. As Sakumo faded into obscurity, the Third Hokage could deflect any questions with vague explanations of "arrangements."

What he underestimated, however, was Sakumo's restless spirit. A man of honor and action, Sakumo was not the type to quietly fade away.

Sakumo's Frustration and Decision

The Third Hokage's cold treatment left Sakumo frustrated and idle. With capable ninja available to replace him, the village saw no urgent need to call upon the White Fang. For Sakumo, this exclusion was unbearable. He wanted to fight, to prove himself, and to be recognized.

Unable to endure the stagnation, Sakumo sought out Shinki.

"I want to join the Anbu," Sakumo declared, his tone firm.

Shinki raised an eyebrow. "Senior, the Anbu is no place for glory. Once you put on that mask, your past achievements are erased. You'll no longer be Konoha's White Fang, but just another shadow in the darkness."

Sakumo's response was resolute. "That's fine. I no longer wish to live in the shadow of my past achievements."

Understanding his determination, Shinki agreed and escorted Sakumo to the Anbu base. After signing the necessary confidentiality documents, Hatake Sakumo officially became a member of the Anbu.

A Humble Start in the Anbu

"Senior," Shinki explained, "Although your strength surpasses that of Eagle and Tiger, as a new member, I can only appoint you as a team leader. Higher positions require proven merit within the Anbu."

This decision, while pragmatic, was also strategic. Offering Sakumo a squadron leader position from the outset would spark dissent among other members. Starting him as a team leader was a fair balance, acknowledging his strength while maintaining order within the Anbu.

"I understand," Sakumo replied confidently. "I'll work my way up."

Sakumo's confidence was unshaken. He believed his skills would earn him a higher position in due time.

The Mask of White Fang

At the logistics department, Sakumo chose a dog-head mask and assigned himself the codename "White Fang."

Shinki's expression twitched. Even in the Anbu, you cling to that title?

He sighed inwardly. The Anbu's work was shrouded in secrecy, making it unlikely that Sakumo's identity would be widely recognized. Still, this self-revealing behavior felt oddly reminiscent of a certain future God of War, Hatake Kakashi—complete with a family heirloom weapon and a signature style that practically screamed his identity despite the Anbu mask.

After handing Sakumo over to Eagle, Shinki left the scene. This guy's going to be a headache for the squadron leader. At least he's not directly under the Hokage's jurisdiction.

Mission Assignment

Eagle assigned Sakumo three teammates and a mission to gather intelligence in the Mist Village, a task both challenging and dangerous. Sakumo was thrilled by the opportunity and set off with enthusiasm.

Tiger approached Eagle with concern. "Isn't this mission a bit excessive for a new team leader?"

Eagle shrugged. "What else would you have me do? Keep him on village duty?"

Tiger fell silent. There was little point in arguing. Sakumo's restless energy made it clear he wouldn't settle for mundane tasks. If he wanted action, sending him to the Mist Village during its current chaos was a suitable challenge.

Farewell and Departure

With Anbu affairs settled, Shinki prepared to leave Konoha with Kushina. At the village gates, Namikaze Minato arrived to see them off, his expression reluctant.

"Why are you here?" Shinki asked, waving him away. "This is just a stroll outside the village, not a battlefield. Go back and focus on your sealing techniques and physical training. You're not coming with us."

Minato pouted but obeyed, retreating with a resigned expression.

After leaving the village, Shinki and Kushina reached a small river. Shinki perched on a rock by the roadside, motioning for Kushina to catch up. "Hurry up. Stop dragging your feet."

With that, their journey began.
