Chapter 340: Chapter 340: Raise Troops for a Thousand Days, Use Them for a Moment
From this point forward, Hiashi did many things his father had never dared to attempt.
For instance, he improved the status of the branch family, reduced their exploitation, and strictly prohibited the insulting or arbitrary punishment of branch members.
Though these reforms made many elders of the clan unhappy, they could do little about it. Their complaints remained mere murmurs of discontent, unable to challenge Hiashi's authority.
The old clan leader was gravely ill and barely holding on to life. The young clan leader could assume leadership at any moment.
At this critical juncture, openly opposing Hiashi seemed like asking for trouble.
So, their resistance gradually eroded, piece by piece.
"Mehu's association with Shinki is part of the family's plan," Hiashi declared. "Considering this, everyone should set aside unnecessary concerns. If you're idle, consider bringing gifts to visit the orphans and widows within the family."
The room fell silent.
Fine!
They silently conceded. We were wrong, young clan leader. Please, spare us further admonishment.
These elders quickly decided that questioning Hiashi's intentions regarding Mehu was not worth the trouble.
Compared to poking around in Mehu's affairs, the prospect of having to deliver gifts while wearing forced smiles to comfort widows and orphans was much worse. It was a bitter pill to swallow, like eating something utterly revolting.
When did the family dynamic become like this?
The elders silently lamented their predicament. Why does the young clan leader keep forcing us to do things we don't want to do? And why do we always end up complying?
After leaving Konoha, Shinki's first destination was the Land of Whirlpools.
Although Kushina hadn't explicitly mentioned it, Shinki knew she longed to visit her former home, even if it now lay in ruins.
Thanks to Shinki's summoned beast, Kushina and the others didn't have to worry about safety, allowing them to travel without incident.
For Kushina, this was her first journey outside Konoha. The same was true for Mehu. Even Uchiha Mikoto, despite having ventured out on family missions, rarely left the village.
It's often said that the noise level of three women together rivals that of a flock of ducks, and this proved true. Kushina and Mikoto talked endlessly, with Mehu, usually quiet and reserved, becoming far more lively as she joined in.
Their animated conversations even extended to debating the appearance of a small animal for an absurd amount of time, leaving Shinki, who was walking behind them, exasperated.
I used to think boys at this age were childish and noisy, he mused. Turns out girls are just as bad.
Two days later, they reached the coastline. Kushina looked around, puzzled by the absence of docks.
"Shinki, do we need to take a boat?" she asked.
It was clear they couldn't simply walk to the Land of Whirlpools. The stretch of sea separating them from their destination was far too wide.
While Shinki and Kushina could likely handle the crossing with their abilities, Mehu's physical limitations would make it difficult for her to keep up.
"As the saying goes, raise troops for a thousand days to use them for a moment," Shinki remarked cryptically as he gazed at the sea.
The three girls exchanged confused looks. What troops could possibly be raised in the water?
Before they could ask further, a massive shadow appeared in the water, moving swiftly in an S-shaped path toward the shore.
"Kushina, a strong creature is approaching!" Kurama warned, sensing its presence. "It's fast and powerful."
"What? A strong creature?" Kushina exclaimed in alarm. Mikoto and Mehu instinctively stepped back.
Really? Shinki thought, glancing at the startled group. You're all standing right here with me—what are you afraid of?
Looks like I'll need to summon more often, he thought. Otherwise, even my companions will forget my summoned beasts exist.
With a loud splash, the water erupted, and a colossal golden serpent emerged, sunlight glinting off its shimmering scales.
"Whoa…" Kushina gasped in awe.
Even Kurama, the mighty Nine-Tails, grumbled in annoyance from its sealed space.
What's the big deal? it thought. Am I not impressive enough?
The golden serpent, Jin'ya, was enormous, rivaling even the legendary Manda in size. It slithered closer to the shoreline, its immense head dipping low to allow Shinki and the others to climb aboard.
"Jin'ya, long time no see. You've grown quite a bit," Shinki said, observing the snake's immense stature. "Where's Hei'ya?"
"Exploring the seabed," Jin'ya replied, its voice rumbling like distant thunder. "Catching strange creatures as usual. Should I call it back?"
"No need. Let it explore. Just take us to the Land of Whirlpools."
Jin'ya lowered its massive head, allowing the group to leap aboard.
"This summoned beast is amazing," Mehu said excitedly, her cheeks flushed as she gestured animatedly.
Kushina and Mikoto nodded in agreement.
They had seen many summoned beasts before, but Jin'ya's sheer size and presence were extraordinary.
