Chapter 17: Chapter 17: Ninja Mission!

The mission hall in Konoha bustled with activity as shinobi came and went, receiving tasks assigned by the Third Hokage. This was where missions entrusted to Konoha by various clients were categorized into four ranks: D, C, B, and A. For beginners like Kirito and his teammates, only D-rank and the occasional low-risk C-rank missions were permitted.

"Get ready for your first mission of youth!" proclaimed Guy, beaming as he held up a scroll he had just received from the Third Hokage. He presented it with pride to his eager students.

"Oh!! What is it, Sensei?!" Rock Lee asked, fists clenched in excitement.

"Could it be protecting a dignitary? Or escorting a wealthy merchant?" Tenten mused, her mind filled with grandiose images of heroic deeds.

[Should I shatter their fantasies?] thought Kirito, suppressing a knowing smirk. Having read about these missions in the original storyline, he already knew what was coming. Still, he let Guy handle the impending disappointment.

"No, no, no!" Guy said with a sparkling smile, flashing his signature pose. "Your mission is... to catch a runaway cat with youthful enthusiasm!"

The air fell silent.

"How could this be?" Tenten and Lee groaned, their heads drooping simultaneously.

"Why the gloom? This is a great opportunity to test your scouting skills and teamwork!" Guy countered, striking a dramatic pose. "Imagine the fiery youthfulness of chasing down this feline together!"

"Guy," interrupted the Third Hokage from behind, a touch of irritation in his tone. "Kindly move aside after receiving the mission. You're blocking the others."

"Apologies, Lord Hokage!" Guy bowed deeply before ushering his students out of the mission hall.

Outside, on a raised platform overlooking the village, Guy pointed to the mission scroll, which bore an image of a tiger-striped cat wearing a bow.

"You're tasked with finding this cat within the village and bringing it back safely," Guy explained.

"But where do we even begin looking in such a large village?" Tenten asked, her tone still laced with disappointment.

"Don't worry! With passion and youthful spirit, all things are possible!" Guy reassured them with his trademark exuberance. "And according to the client, the cat has a bell tied to it. You can locate it by the sound."

Tenten sighed. "In a village as noisy as this, how are we supposed to distinguish one bell from all the other sounds?"

Kirito, who had been silent until now, stepped forward. "I can handle this. I'll locate the cat using my eyes."

Guy froze, astonished. "You can see across the entire village?"

The Hyuga clan's Byakugan was known for its long-range vision and perception, but covering an entire village of Konoha's size—several kilometers—was unprecedented. Guy decided to let Kirito prove his claim.

"Really? That's amazing, Kirito!" Tenten said, her mood lifting.

"I'll find it myself!" Lee interjected, his resolve burning. "Even if it's difficult, I want to show that I'm a capable ninja. I'll prove I can compete with geniuses!"

Lee pointed a determined finger at Kirito. "Let's make it a competition! Whoever catches the cat first wins. If I lose, I'll do 50 laps around Konoha on my head!"

"That's the spirit, Lee!" Guy cheered, giving a thumbs-up. He turned to Kirito. "What's your decision?"

Kirito sighed inwardly. [This team is something else.] Still, faced with their fiery determination, he couldn't back down. "Alright. I won't use my Byakugan to keep things fair."

"Deal!" Lee exclaimed. "Whoever catches the cat first is the winner! Sensei, you'll be the referee!"

Tenten buried her face in her hands. "Why is this happening…"

Guy ignored her despair. "Alright! Everyone, take your positions—" He raised his hand dramatically. "Begin!"

The three darted off in different directions. Lee sprinted through the streets, scanning for any sign of the cat while questioning passersby. Tenten wandered the alleys, asking pedestrians if they had spotted the tiger-striped feline.

Meanwhile, Kirito leaped across rooftops, shutting his eyes to focus. He used a technique he had honed during meditation—a skill that allowed him to "see" through sound, heat, and airflow. By attuning his senses, Kirito created a vivid mental image of the area around him, perceiving even the faintest signals.

[This is perfect for situations like this. Even without the Byakugan, I can manage.] Kirito smirked. [And it's a good backup plan if someone ever tries to take my eyes.]

A faint jingling sound reached his ears. Among the cacophony of the village, it stood out—a soft, pleasant chime that could only belong to the cat's bell.

[Found it!]

Kirito traced the sound to a quieter area near the riverbank. As he approached, he spotted the tiger-striped cat resting on a stone pier. Its ears twitched alertly, scanning for danger even as it lounged.

Kirito crouched behind a nearby fence, waiting for the cat to relax. [This feels oddly thrilling, like a stealth mission in a game.]

The cat yawned, its guard lowering for a brief moment. [Now's my chance!]

Kirito sprang forward, only to see another figure dart into view—Lee. Covered in sweat, Lee had tracked the cat to the same spot, his determination undeterred by exhaustion.

Both lunged at the cat simultaneously. Kirito quickly calculated the distance and realized Lee would reach it first. [He's got this one.]

Just as Lee's hand was about to touch the cat, it leaped into the air, evading him. Kirito seized the opportunity, snatching the feline mid-air by the scruff of its neck.

"I won," Kirito said, holding the now-limp and resigned cat. Lee, panting, stopped in his tracks.

"You did," Lee admitted, his voice tinged with disappointment. "Fifty laps—I'll complete them!"

"Don't be too hard on yourself," Kirito said. "You were unlucky this time. It happens."

"It's okay! I'll win next time!" Lee declared, his resolve unshaken.

Back at the mission hall, the cat was returned to its owner—a heavily made-up woman who smothered it with affection. The feline, clearly displeased, struggled in her arms.

"I wonder if it's a good or bad thing for the cat to be found…" Tenten muttered, watching the poor creature's plight.

"Cheer up, Lee!" Guy said, patting his student on the back. "Youth is about perseverance. Tears and setbacks only make success sweeter!"

"Yes, Sensei!" Lee responded, his spirit reigniting.

And with that, the team completed their first mission, ready for the next challenge.
