Chapter 18: Chapter 18: The Ant Sparrow Task

On the outskirts of Konoha Village, Team Three arrived at the home of a local farmer.

"Mr. Murano, we are the ninja assigned to help solve your problem. Could you explain the situation in detail?" asked Guy politely, knocking on the door.

A simple, middle-aged man opened the door with a relieved expression. "You're here! Thank you for coming. Please, follow me."

Murano led the group through lush fields on the village outskirts, where blue skies stretched endlessly overhead. Clear streams meandered through the landscape, and farmers worked diligently, painting a serene picture of rural tranquility.

"This place is so beautiful!" Tenten remarked, feeling a sense of calm as she admired the idyllic scenery.

Although Konoha was primarily a military base, its outskirts were dedicated to essential agricultural activities. Many ninja supplemented their income by working these fields when not on missions.

"It's like stepping into a paradise," Kirito added, his appreciation for the scene genuine.

As a child of the countryside in his previous life, Kirito was reminded of the rural beauty he had left behind—though even that paled in comparison to this picturesque environment.

"Mr. Murano, what exactly is our task?" Rock Lee asked, his curiosity piqued.

Murano explained that for the past year, his fields had been ravaged by a species of bird called the ant sparrow. These small, black birds, resembling sparrows, traveled in large flocks, devouring everything in their path like locusts. Last year, they had overturned his soil and eaten all the grain seeds, leaving him with nothing.

"If it happens again this year, I'll go bankrupt," Murano said, his voice tinged with desperation. "Please help me protect my fields."

"Leave it to us!" Lee replied enthusiastically.

Murano led them to a remote field bordered by forest. The lush crops were interspersed with crooked, tattered scarecrows, evidence of the birds' aggression.

"These are my fields," Murano said. "The ant sparrows destroyed them around this time last year. They're not just a threat to the crops—they can be quite aggressive. Please, be careful."

After Murano left, the team gathered under the shade of a tree to discuss their strategy.

Guy clapped his hands together. "First, we'll need to camp here until the ant sparrows appear. Does anyone have concerns about staying out for a few days?"

"No problem!" came the unanimous response.

"Good! Let's enjoy our first youth-filled camping experience as a team!" Guy exclaimed. "This kind of situation will become common as you take on more missions outside the village."

Tenten redirected the conversation to the mission. "The scarecrows clearly haven't been enough. It looks like we'll need weapons to drive the birds away."

Kirito nodded. "Especially long-range weapons. Since the ant sparrows are airborne, we'll need something that can reach them."

"Let's see what we have," Lee suggested, pulling out his kunai and shuriken.

Each team member emptied their supplies:

Tenten: Kunai x20, Shuriken x20 Rock Lee: Kunai x10, Shuriken x10 Guy: Kunai x5, Shuriken x10 Kirito: Kunai x2, Shuriken x0

"Kirito, why do you carry so few weapons?" Tenten asked, surprised by his sparse arsenal.

Kirito replied calmly, "One kunai is enough if used wisely. I also rely on my Eight Trigrams: Vacuum Palm for long-range attacks. If that doesn't work, shuriken wouldn't help either."

Tenten and Lee exchanged skeptical looks, but his reasoning was hard to refute.

Realizing their limited supplies wouldn't be enough, Kirito proposed a solution. "We can carve wooden projectiles, like senbon, to supplement our weapons. Otherwise, we won't have enough when the birds arrive."

He demonstrated by cutting a branch into a needle-like shape with his kunai, holding it up for the others to see.

"That's a great idea, but where do we find enough wood?" Tenten asked.

"Leaf Great Whirlwind!"

Guy's voice rang out as several trees crashed down nearby, neatly felled by his powerful kicks.

"Nothing can stop the fire of youth!" Guy declared, standing proudly amidst the fallen trees.

"Oh, Sensei! You're amazing!" Lee exclaimed, his eyes shining with admiration. "Let's compete to see who can carve the most senbon!"

"Challenge accepted, Lee!" Guy responded, his competitive spirit ignited.

Tenten groaned, covering her face with her hands. "Not again…"

As the sun set, the group gathered around a campfire. Their day had been spent crafting an impressive pyramid of wooden senbon.

Lee glanced at Kirito's pile, which was noticeably taller than the rest, and sighed. "I lost again…"

"Don't let it get to you, Lee," Tenten said, trying to comfort him.

From morning until evening, the group had worked tirelessly. Lee started strong, his enthusiasm pushing him ahead, but exhaustion caught up with him. Tenten was the first to stop, followed by Lee and then Guy. Only Kirito continued steadily, surpassing everyone by the end.

"Kirito, how do you have so much stamina?" Tenten asked, nibbling on a grilled fish.

"I just pace myself and focus on the task," Kirito replied, slicing another branch into senbon with practiced ease. "You could say I'm a ruthless machine when it comes to efficiency."

"Hahaha!" Guy laughed, clapping Lee on the back. "That's the spirit of youth, Lee! Keep pushing forward, and you'll grow stronger!"

"Yes, Sensei!" Lee said, his determination reigniting. "I won't let losses weigh me down. I'll grow from this!"

"Good attitude, Lee!" Guy praised, his smile as bright as ever.

Tenten, seeing Lee's renewed spirit, smiled as well. "Let's focus on tomorrow. When the ant sparrows come, we'll handle them together."

Lee, however, had another idea. "Kirito, I challenge you again! Tomorrow, let's see who can take down the most ant sparrows!"

"Fine by me," Kirito said, taking a bite of his grilled fish.

The group settled in for the night, ready for whatever the next day would bring.
