Chapter 28: Chapter 28: Chunin Exam Prelude
As July approached, the weather grew hotter and hotter.
After completing their training mission, Kirito, TenTen, and Rock Lee found shade under a nearby tree to cool off.
"Hey, have you heard?" Rock Lee asked, doing push-ups on his head even while taking a break. "This Chunin Exam will feature newcomers for the first time in five years!"
A few days prior, Guy had informed the team they could prepare for this year's Chunin Exam. Rock Lee, full of confidence, eagerly anticipated the exam and hoped all three of them would pass together. After all, the delay in taking the exam was partly due to him.
"How is that possible? It must be some Jonin saving face," TenTen commented, twirling a kunai in her hand.
"No, three of them are from Kakashi's team."
"Well, isn't that interesting," TenTen said nonchalantly, throwing her kunai at a target hanging on a tree trunk. Despite the target being full of kunai, her throw still struck an empty spot on the bullseye with precision.
"Don't underestimate them. This year is full of prodigies," Kirito said while petting Little Leopard.
"Huh? Are they really that strong?" TenTen asked, surprised by Kirito's warning.
"I heard this year's exam is a joint one with other villages," Rock Lee chimed in. "Kirito, are you suggesting we be wary of the candidates from the other villages?"
Kirito thought for a moment and nodded. "Something like that."
"Well, if Kirito says so, I won't underestimate them," Rock Lee agreed, flipping into a cross-legged sitting position. "I think we should pretend to be weaker than we are. It'll help us avoid unnecessary attention and catch our opponents off guard."
"Lee, that's not a bad strategy!" TenTen supported his idea.
Kirito, however, shook his head. "It's unnecessary, but you can try. I doubt it'll work."
"Well, Kirito doesn't need to pretend to be weak," TenTen teased, "but sure, Lee, let's go with your idea."
As TenTen and Rock Lee discussed their strategy, Kirito pulled out the Chunin Exam application form Guy had given them that morning and reflected on the plot points of the Chunin Exam he vaguely remembered.
On July 1st, they arrived at Room 201 of the Ninja Academy, the venue for the first Chunin Exam. By the time they reached the classroom, a crowd of candidates had already gathered at the door.
"Why is everyone standing outside?" TenTen asked, curious about the commotion.
"It seems like they're being blocked by two 'gatekeepers,'" Kirito said, looking over the crowd. At the front of the group stood two young men—one with black hair and three bandages on his chin, and the other with brown hair wearing a ninja hat.
The two gatekeepers were stopping anyone who approached the door while taunting the candidates to make them question their strength. This left many stuck outside.
"These two will be gatekeepers for Konoha later," Kirito recalled, recognizing them as Izumo Kamizuki and Kotetsu Hagane.
Rock Lee, seeing an opportunity to act weak, whispered to TenTen, "I'll pretend to get beaten by them to hide our strength." Without hesitation, he approached the door and was promptly kicked back by Kotetsu.
"Are you sure you want to take the Chunin Exam, little brats?" Kotetsu taunted, joined by Izumo.
TenTen, playing along, walked up with a pitiful expression. "Please, let us through!"
Before Izumo's punch could land on her, Kirito caught his wrist mid-air, his expression calm.
"Oh, a hero saving the damsel?" Izumo sneered, attempting to free his hand. To his shock, Kirito's grip didn't budge. After several failed attempts, Izumo reached for a kunai, only for Kirito to warn him, "Move, and not even Tsunade will be able to fix your hand."
Izumo felt a sharp pain in his wrist, akin to being caught in a vice, and cried out. Kotetsu, recognizing Kirito, whispered urgently, "Izumo, stop. He's the legendary medical ninja from Konoha Hospital."
Kirito had gained renown for his extraordinary talent in medical ninjutsu during his night shifts at the hospital, earning him a legendary status among those who sought treatment late at night.
Realizing the danger of offending a skilled medical ninja, Izumo quickly apologized and stepped aside. Kirito, however, returned to TenTen and Rock Lee instead of entering the classroom.
"You didn't need to go that far," TenTen muttered with a blush. "But thanks anyway."
"It's fine," Kirito reassured her. "Teams have strengths and weaknesses. No need to overthink it."
Meanwhile, Sasuke, with his hands in his pockets, led Naruto and Sakura through the crowd to the classroom door. He confidently pointed out the genjutsu disguising the classroom's number. "Let's remove this illusion."
With the illusion dispelled, the number above the door changed from 301 to 201. Kotetsu and Izumo, however, weren't ready to let them pass easily and launched a sneak attack on Sasuke.
Before their kicks could connect, Rock Lee intercepted them, grabbing both their legs mid-air and stopping the fight instantly.
"He's fast!" Sakura exclaimed, impressed by Lee's sudden burst of speed.
"Why draw attention if you're pretending to be weak?" TenTen questioned, exasperated.
Rock Lee, undeterred, walked up to Sakura with newfound confidence. "My name is Rock Lee. You're Sakura, right?"
"Uh… yeah?"
"Please go out with me! I'll protect you with my life!" Lee exclaimed, flashing a bright smile.
Sakura refused without hesitation. "No way. Your eyebrows are too thick."
The rejection left Lee dejected, slumping against a nearby wall. Kirito stepped in and patted his shoulder. "Let's go, Lee."
Naruto, noticing Kirito, shouted excitedly, "Kirito, you're taking the Chunin Exam too?"
Sasuke, less thrilled, frowned. "So, the so-called genius from last year is here too."
"Yeah, let's work hard," Kirito replied casually, waving at Naruto.
"I won't lose to you," Sasuke declared, issuing a challenge.
"And neither will I!" Naruto added enthusiastically.
As the trio left, TenTen watched them go and asked, "Do you think they'll be tough opponents?"
"They're good, but Lee could handle them on his own," Kirito replied.
"That doesn't make them strong, then."
"No, Lee is just that strong."
The group continued toward the exam venue. Suddenly, Rock Lee stopped and said, "You two go ahead. I've got something to take care of."
Despite TenTen's concern about the time, Lee assured them he'd make it. Kirito and TenTen left, knowing Lee's side mission wouldn't put him in danger.
