Chapter 62: Chapter 62: Meeting Tsunade
As they arrived at the entrance of the Konoha Hospital, the ANBU escort halted, bowing respectfully to Tsunade.
"Tsunade-sama, the Hokage is in the room at the far left of the second floor. I'll leave you here. Take care."
Tsunade nodded. With a flicker, the ANBU disappeared into the distance, leaving her facing the hospital doors.
Her footsteps faltered.
Though she had looked forward to meeting her granduncle again, an unexpected wave of hesitation swept over her. How could she face him?
As the princess of the Senju clan, Tsunade hadn't been able to protect her family. She'd lost her little brother, Nawaki, during the Second Great Ninja War. She had failed her loved ones, and her grief had driven her to despair—gambling, drinking, and even developing a crippling hemophobia.
What kind of face could she show to her granduncle, who had upheld the title of Hokage with such honor?
Tears welled up in her eyes.
Shizune, standing beside her, noticed Tsunade's unease. She set down the small pig she was holding and gently embraced her mentor.
"Tsunade-sama, go and see him. He's your granduncle, after all. He'll be overjoyed to see you again!"
Tsunade blinked away her tears and took a deep breath. Gently pushing Shizune away, she squared her shoulders, her usual confident demeanor returning.
"Of course. Why wouldn't I want to see my granduncle?" she declared with a forced laugh.
After quickly tidying her slightly disheveled hair, she turned and strode through the hospital doors. Her voice dropped to a whisper as she passed Shizune, so soft that her companion almost didn't catch it.
"Thank you, Shizune."
Inside the hospital, Tsunade walked toward the designated room, her presence commanding respect. Even a passing nurse couldn't help but gaze at her in awe.
But as Tsunade entered the room and saw the familiar figure clad in the Hokage's robes, her composure crumbled. Tears streamed down her face.
"Granduncle!"
Senju Tobirama, who had been examining Uchiha Itachi's condition, turned at the sound of the door. Initially expecting Shikaku Nara with some news, he was caught off guard when a blur of golden hair rushed toward him.
"Tsu...nade?"
Before he could react, Tsunade had thrown herself into his arms, sobbing uncontrollably.
Tobirama stood motionless for a moment, unaccustomed to such displays of emotion. But then, slowly and gently, he returned the embrace.
"Welcome back, Tsunade," he said softly.
Her sobs grew louder.
It wasn't just the joy of reuniting with her granduncle. It was years of pent-up grief, guilt, and frustration spilling out all at once. The decline of the Senju clan, the loss of her brother, and her own failures—all of it poured out in her tears.
Shizune, sensing this was a moment meant only for the two of them, quietly closed the door behind her.
As for Itachi, lying in the hospital bed, he wordlessly pulled the bedsheet over his face. Perhaps Sasuke would have reacted similarly if he ever saw him like this, he mused.
When Tsunade finally composed herself, she stood up, wiping away her tears and snot. Though her eyes were still red, her smile was back.
"Granduncle... it's been a while."
Tobirama nodded. Though unspoken, his brief glance conveyed his concern.
"How have you been, Tsunade?"
The question was simple, yet it carried a weight of unspoken understanding. Tobirama had never been one for elaborate words, and even after his revival, his reserved nature had only deepened.
"I'm fine, granduncle! Don't underestimate me—I'm Tsunade of the Senju clan!" she declared with renewed confidence, puffing out her chest.
But her gaze flickered toward him, her expression turning serious.
"Granduncle, your body... what happened?"
Tobirama's appearance was unmistakably unnatural. His skin was pale, marred with cracks as if he had been stitched back together. Even his eyes held a lifeless quality.
"This is the result of my Impure World Reincarnation. Orochimaru stole the technique and used it to resurrect both me and Hashirama."
Tobirama explained the events leading to his resurrection in detail, recounting the Konoha Crush, the war with Sunagakure, and the mission to save Uchiha Itachi.
Hearing Orochimaru's use of forbidden jutsu to defile the souls, Tsunade's temper flared. She slammed her fist into the hospital wall, leaving a large dent.
"That snake! How dare he desecrate your souls! If I ever see him, I'll skin him alive!"
Tobirama raised a hand in apology to the nurse peeking through the hole in the wall before addressing Tsunade calmly.
"It's fine, Tsunade. I've sealed Hashirama's Impure World Reincarnation, and his soul has returned to the Pure Land."
"And you, granduncle? Will you stay here in Konoha?"
Her voice carried a note of hope.
"I will. The current state of the shinobi world demands it. Konoha needs me to keep things stable."
Tsunade's face brightened at his confirmation.
"If you're here, granduncle, then I'll stay too!" she declared without hesitation.
The Senju clan's legacy and her desire to support Tobirama were all the motivation she needed.
"Good. Konoha needs you, Tsunade."
They spent the next hour catching up, talking about the village's state. When she learned of Danzo's death and Hiruzen Sarutobi's house arrest, Tsunade couldn't help clapping in satisfaction.
Finally, a sliver of justice for the Senju clan's decline had been served.
As for Itachi, he peeked out from under his sheet to breathe, only for Tobirama to suddenly recall something important.
"Tsunade, there's something I need your help with."
