Chapter 9: Chapter 9: The New Hokage
"Second-sama, only you have the ability and authority to lead Konoha once more."
Hatake Kakashi's voice rang out, catching everyone off guard as he became the first to step forward.
As a child, Kakashi had endured the tragic loss of his father, Hatake Sakumo. Sakumo, known as the White Fang of Konoha, had chosen to abandon a mission to save his comrades, leading to severe consequences for the village. Instead of gratitude, he was met with harsh criticism—even from those he had saved. Unable to bear the weight of their scorn, Sakumo ultimately took his own life.
Kakashi, scarred by the incident, closed off his heart, withdrawing from the world. It wasn't until he joined Minato's team that he began to heal, slowly opening up to the sincerity of his comrades.
But the peace didn't last. The outbreak of war claimed the lives of Obito and Rin, his dearest friends. Then, his mentor, Namikaze Minato, sacrificed himself during the Nine-Tails incident.
Though Kakashi carried on, his inner world grew darker. Yet, one thing had remained: the unresolved hatred in his heart.
Over the years, Kakashi had quietly investigated his father's death, uncovering the truth. One of the shinobi Sakumo had saved confessed that Danzo, a member of the Hokage advisory council, had orchestrated the smear campaign against the White Fang. The rumors and slander that plagued his father's name had been deliberately spread by those in power.
To Kakashi, the Konoha leadership had proven itself corrupt and petty. The village needed a new kind of leader—someone upright and just, like the Fourth Hokage. He could not bear to see promising talents, such as his own student Uzumaki Naruto, crushed under the weight of these oppressive politics.
"Hatake Kakashi, do you understand the implications of what you're saying? Second-sama has already given everything for Konoha. Are you now suggesting that we force a hero to toil even in death? This is a desecration of his sacrifice!"
Danzo's voice thundered in outrage. He could not allow Tobirama, now in a state of Impure World Reincarnation, to reclaim leadership. After waiting so long for Sarutobi Hiruzen to step down, there was no way Danzo could endure the prospect of Tobirama's undying presence. If Tobirama reinstated himself and groomed a worthy successor during his tenure, Danzo's ambitions to become Hokage would be forever out of reach.
"The esteemed council Danzo, I must respectfully disagree."
The calm voice of Hyuga Hiashi cut through the tension. "Second-sama has always acted with impartiality and wisdom. As a former Hokage, it is entirely reasonable for him to resume leadership of Konoha."
As the head of the Hyuga Clan—currently the most prominent family in the village after the near annihilation of the Uchiha—Hiashi's opinion carried significant weight. His support for Tobirama wasn't without its own motives.
"Hyuga…" Danzo shot Hiashi a venomous glare, silently vowing to remember this slight.
"Yes, we wholeheartedly support Second-sama as Hokage!"
One by one, the other clans expressed their agreement.
"My friends, I am humbled by your trust. Even in death, if I can still serve Konoha, I will gladly do so," Tobirama declared with unwavering resolve. "I, Tobirama Senju, shall assume the role of Hokage once more. Should Konoha find a worthy successor in the future, I will pass the title to them without hesitation."
His declaration stirred the hearts of everyone present. This was the Second Hokage, after all—a man of unparalleled dedication and integrity.
Under Danzo's jealous, burning gaze, Tobirama reached out and took the Hokage's ceremonial hat.
"Second-sama, transitioning leadership is no trivial matter," Nara Shikaku interjected seriously. "We must notify the Daimyo of the Land of Fire to obtain his approval."
"I am well aware," Tobirama replied, his tone calm but resolute. "Tomorrow, I shall personally travel to the Daimyo's court. For now, inform the villagers of this decision."
Daimyo? A pompous figurehead. While such thoughts crossed his mind, Tobirama's words reflected nothing but respect for the formalities.
"Third-sama has stepped down? Second-sama is the Hokage again?"
"Is that true?!"
The news spread quickly throughout Konoha, sparking spirited discussion among the villagers.
"Tobirama Senju… the Second Hokage?"
In a quiet corner of the village, a shadowed figure perked up, drawn to the growing chatter. The figure moved closer to a crowd, speaking in a hoarse voice.
"Hey, what's this about the Second Hokage? What's going on?"
The chunin giving an animated recount of recent events glanced skeptically at the raggedly dressed man.
Another outsider? he thought.
"Friend, you must've been away from the village these past few days. The Second Hokage has been resurrected! And Third-sama has stepped down to let him lead again. The ceremony should happen in a few days."
"Oh, I see," the man said with a laugh, feigning casual interest. "I've been out on missions and missed the news. Who'd have thought something this big would happen?"
Making his excuses, the black-clad figure slipped away from the crowd.
"Tobirama Senju has been resurrected? This needs to be reported immediately," he thought, his steps quickening as he disappeared into a narrow alley.
