Chapter 7: Shadows and Beasts
Yacarta was slowly stitching itself back together after the dragon attack, but Tanya and I knew the city's wounds ran deeper than broken buildings. Someone had sent that dragon, and we were determined to find out who.
As we followed the magical trail Tanya had picked up, our journey led us to the outskirts of the city, where the dense forest loomed like a giant broccoli patch. We trekked through the underbrush, Tanya leading with her intense, warrior-like focus, while I mostly tried not to trip over the roots that snaked across our path.
"You'd think evil masterminds would leave easier trails to follow. Maybe some neon signs?" I grumbled, trying to lighten the mood.
Tanya, scanning the area with her piercing gaze, didn't respond. Her silence was abruptly interrupted by the sudden rustling of bushes ahead.
"Uh, Tanya? I don't think that's just the wind," I said, my heart racing.
Before we could react, two massive figures emerged from the shadows, muscles rippling and eyes glowing with an intensity that suggested they could squash us without a second thought. One was a tiger beastkin, sleek orange and black stripes glistening under the moonlight, wielding a magnificent axe. Its blade shimmered with a polished finish, intricate carvings of ancient runes adorning its surface. The other was a lion beastkin, his mane gleaming like spun gold, carrying a sword that appeared to be forged from the very bones of a dragon, its edge jagged and imposing.
"Looks like we caught some trespassers, Marduk," the tiger beastkin grinned.
"What do you think, Brutus? Should we let them explain, or just scare them a bit?" the lion smirked.
"Whoa, hold on! We're just here to... uh... sightsee?" I raised my hands in a placating gesture.
Tanya, ever composed, stepped forward, her sword drawn. "We're not here to fight. We're tracking a dangerous enemy who controlled the dragon that attacked Yacarta. If you know anything, it would be wise to share it."
Brutus, the tiger, grinned wider. "Oh, we know. But you don't just waltz into beastkin territory without proving you can handle yourselves."
"I don't like where this is going," I whispered to Tanya.
"Prove ourselves? Fine by me," she replied, her eyes glinting with determination.
Before I could protest, Brutus lunged at Tanya, his axe slicing through the air with a sound that made my teeth clench. Tanya dodged with a graceful spin, landing a quick jab to Brutus's side that made him grunt in surprise.
"Okay, she's got this. I'll... stay here?" I thought, wide-eyed.
Not one to be left out, Marduk turned his attention to me, his feline eyes narrowing as he raised his dragon-bone sword, Not one to be left out, Marduk turned his attention to me, his feline eyes narrowing as he raised his dragon-bone sword, gleaming ominously under the moonlight. "And you, little human? What's your move?"
"Move? I was thinking... maybe a strategic retreat?" I gulped, feeling the weight of the moment.
Marduk chuckled, his massive paws pounding the ground as he lunged. With no other option, I raised Gungnir, managing to block his initial strike. The impact sent vibrations up my arms, but to my surprise, I didn't drop the spear.
"Alright, let's see what you got!" I panted, adrenaline coursing through me.
I swung Gungnir in a wide arc, the tip barely missing Marduk's mane. He dodged with feline grace, but my wild flailing must have caught him off guard because he stumbled slightly.
"Is that supposed to be a dance? You're more entertaining than I thought," Marduk laughed.
"Glad I could amuse you," I replied, panting.
Meanwhile, Tanya and Brutus were engaged in a flurry of rapid strikes and dodges, neither giving an inch. Tanya's sword flashed in the moonlight, her movements like a deadly ballet, while Brutus relied on his brute strength to counter her agility. His axe, despite its size, moved with surprising speed, each swing forcing Tanya to stay on her toes.
"You're fast, but can you handle this?" Brutus roared, leaping into the air to aim a powerful kick at Tanya. She sidestepped just in time, causing him to crash into a nearby tree, shaking the branches so violently that a squirrel fell out and landed on his head.
"Seriously?" Brutus scowled.
"Even the wildlife's against you!" I laughed, the tension easing slightly.
Marduk, not one to be outdone, decided to show off. With a mighty roar, he lunged at me again, but I managed to duck under his swipe. In a moment of desperation, I grabbed a fallen branch and waved it in front of him like a lion tamer.
"Down, kitty!" I grinned.
Marduk raised an eyebrow, clearly unimpressed. "Did you just—"
Before he could finish, I accidentally poked him in the nose with the branch, causing him to sneeze so loudly that even Tanya paused mid-fight to look.
"Really, Zach?" she deadpanned.
"Hey, I'm improvising!" I shrugged, trying to keep the mood light.
Brutus, now free of the squirrel and back on his feet, looked at Marduk, who was still rubbing his nose. "We might want to take these two a little more seriously."
Marduk nodded, stepping back into a ready stance, his sword glowing faintly with residual magic. But before the fight could escalate, Tanya raised her hand.
"Enough. We're not your enemies. We need your help to stop whoever's behind the dragon attack."
Brutus and Marduk exchanged a glance, their playful demeanor giving way to something more serious. Brutus was the first to lower his guard, his axe resting on his shoulder.
"Alright, you've got guts. We can respect that."
"And you've got a strange, but effective, way of fighting. We'll help you," Marduk added.
"Finally! Truce?" I exhaled, relief flooding through me.
As the tension eased, I couldn't help but feel a strange camaraderie forming. Sure, we'd just had a bizarre brawl with two beastkin warriors, but there was something about Brutus and Marduk that made me feel like we could trust them.
"You fight like a madman, but you've got spirit. Welcome to the team," Brutus grinned.
"I'll take that as a compliment," I replied, matching his smile.
With Brutus and Marduk now on our side, we set off deeper into the forest, ready to uncover the mystery behind the people behind this trouble and their dark plans. As we walked, I couldn't help but wonder what other crazy adventures lay ahead.
