Chapter 8: Beasts, Brawls, and Big Plans
As we continued our trek through the forest, the atmosphere shifted from tense to something more companionable. Brutus, his tiger stripes practically glowing under the moonlight, walked alongside Tanya. Marduk, his impressive mane still a little ruffled from the branch incident, kept pace with me.
"So, that sneeze back there—was that your battle roar or just allergies?" I asked Marduk, grinning.
He rolled his eyes. "Laugh it up, twig boy. Next time, I won't go easy on you."
"Easy? That sword of yours looks like it could slice a mountain in half. You call that easy?" I snickered.
Marduk smirked, patting the hilt of his dragon-bone sword, which pulsed faintly with leftover magic. "This beauty? It's called Drakontos. Made from the bones of an elder dragon. Strong enough to crush anything in its path."
I whistled, impressed despite myself. "Fancy. And what about you, Brutus? That axe of yours looks like it belongs in a museum... or a really cool action movie."
Brutus hefted his axe, the blade catching the light in a way that made it look almost too perfect. "This is Aetherfang. Crafted by the best blacksmiths in the beastkin tribes. Strong, sharp, and, if you ask me, downright gorgeous."
"So, we've got Drakontos and Aetherfang... and here I am with Gungnir and Draupnir. I feel like we're the cast of a legendary weapons show," I said, grinning.
Brutus chuckled, his deep, rumbling laugh echoing through the trees. "You've got guts, kid. But tell me, what brings you and your fierce lady friend here? You mentioned the dragon attack, but there's gotta be more to it."
Tanya, ever the stoic warrior, spoke up, her voice steady and firm. "We're tracking a group called the Nightshade Coven. They're responsible for controlling the dragon that attacked Yacarta. We need to stop them before they cause more destruction."
Marduk's eyes narrowed, a glimmer of recognition flashing across his face. "Nightshade Coven? We've been tracking them too. They've been stirring up trouble in the beastkin territories. Dark magic, forbidden rituals... it's bad news."
Brutus nodded. "Sounds like we're after the same prey. They've been targeting not just cities but sacred beastkin lands. We've been trying to cut them off, but they're slippery."
"So, you're telling me we've got a common enemy? Great. It's like one of those team-up movies where the heroes join forces against a bigger bad guy," I chimed in.
"Except in this movie, we're the stars. And you're the comic relief," Brutus grinned.
"Hey! I prefer the term 'witty sidekick,'" I replied, mock hurt.
Marduk smirked, but his expression quickly turned serious. "If we're going to take on the Nightshade Coven, we need to be prepared. They're not just any rogue mages. They've got serious power—and numbers."
"Agreed. We'll need a plan. And allies," Tanya added, nodding.
As we walked, the conversation flowed more easily. Despite the seriousness of our mission, an undeniable camaraderie was forming. Even Tanya, who usually kept her guard up around strangers, seemed more relaxed around Brutus and Marduk.
"You're not half bad with that sword. Most people wouldn't have lasted five minutes against me," Brutus said, grinning at Tanya.
"You weren't so bad yourself. For a tiger," she smirked.
"Is this... is this flirting? Should I give you two a moment?" I laughed.
Tanya shot me a look that could've turned a dragon to stone. "Focus, Zach."
"Right, right. Back to business," I held up my hands in surrender.
Eventually, we reached a clearing where we decided to set up camp for the night. As Brutus and Marduk started a fire, I couldn't help but marvel at how effortlessly they moved. It was like watching a pair of jungle kings, their every motion calculated and precise.
"Do you think they practice looking cool, or is that just a beastkin thing?" I leaned toward Tanya.
"Maybe if you spent less time cracking jokes, you'd look cool too," she replied, rolling her eyes.
"Nah, I've got my charm. It's a different kind of cool," I grinned.
As the fire crackled, we gathered around, the warmth a welcome relief from the cool night air. Brutus pulled out a map, spreading it on the ground.
"We think the Nightshade Coven's main base is here, in the Shadowvale Forest. It's dense, dangerous, and crawling with their kind," he pointed.
"We've tried getting close, but their wards are strong. We'll need to find a way to break through without alerting them," Marduk added.
"Breaking into a heavily guarded forest filled with dark mages? Sounds like a challenge. And I love a good challenge... as long as it doesn't involve more sneezing dragons," I said thoughtfully.
"Don't worry, we'll handle the heavy lifting. You just keep them laughing," Brutus grinned.
"Deal. I'll be the distraction," I smirked.
Tanya, who had been quiet for a moment, spoke up, her gaze focused on the map. "We'll need to move fast. If they realize we're coming, they'll either strengthen their defenses or go into hiding. We can't afford to let them escape."
"Agreed. First light, we move," Brutus nodded.
The rest of the evening passed in a mix of strategizing and banter. Marduk shared stories of his adventures, Brutus regaled us with tales of his people, and I, of course, added my own (probably exaggerated) tales of heroism.
"And that's how I defeated the dragon with nothing but a bell and a branch!" I gestured wildly.
Brutus laughed. "You're something else, Zach. I like you."
"You've got guts. But let's see if that luck holds out tomorrow," Marduk grinned.
As the fire died down, we settled in for the night, the weight of our mission hanging over us but tempered by the bond we were forming. It was strange, but I felt more confident knowing we had allies like Brutus and Marduk by our side.
"Heroes come in all shapes and sizes... and species, apparently," I thought to myself with a smile.
With that, I drifted off to sleep, ready for whatever chaos tomorrow would bring.
