Chapter 69: 69: Luffy's Unmet Promise
Some time ago, Luffy had reviewed the sea charts.
However, for reasons beyond comprehension, it seemed his knack for maps was just… lacking.
He'd completely forgotten the routes.
"Damn it," Luffy grumbled, scratching his head.
"Without a map, where the heck am I supposed to go?"
Frustration welled up inside him.
He was left adrift, aimlessly wandering.
The only thing he knew for certain was that he had drifted out of the Calm Belt.
He could feel the breeze brushing against his cheeks, a sensation that was oddly refreshing and exciting.
"Wait a second!" Luffy exclaimed, an idea striking him like lightning.
"I can just ask for directions!"
Waving his hand, he summoned a few fish to his side, their slippery bodies gliding through the water effortlessly.
"Hey!" Luffy called out to them.
"Do you know how to get to the Sabaody Archipelago?"
The question was straightforward and earnest, as was Luffy's nature.
But the absurdity of it hit him almost immediately.
How could fish possibly understand him?
He slapped his forehead, bursting into laughter at his own silliness.
"Man, I'm such an idiot!" Luffy said, shaking his head.
"Why am I talking to fish?
"My brain must be broken or something!"
But then inspiration struck again.
Fish might not understand human speech, but they definitely knew the way.
There was no doubt in his mind about that.
Luffy grinned, his eyes gleaming with determination.
"All right, time to do this the smart way!"
Summoning his Conqueror's Haki, Luffy activated its unique power, channeling it directly into the consciousness of the fish around him.
In an instant, he began sifting through their memories.
Through flashes of thoughts and feelings, Luffy read the minds of the fish, their fragmented recollections unfolding like pieces of a puzzle.
He nodded occasionally as he processed the information.
Fish, after all, were migratory creatures.
Some of them had traveled great distances, crossing oceans and currents.
By piecing together their collective knowledge, he could trace routes he would never have found otherwise.
It didn't take long.
Soon enough, Luffy's eyes lit up with excitement.
"I've got it!" he exclaimed, his grin widening.
"One of these fish has been to Sabaody before!"
"This is awesome!"
"I think I know the way now."
With his newfound knowledge, Luffy felt confident enough to plot his next move.
After a few more moments of sorting through the fish's memories, he clapped his hands together.
"Ha! I really am a genius!"
Using the fish's memories like pieces of a map, he managed to stitch together a rough route to his destination.
Without wasting any more time, Luffy turned and set off in the direction he believed was right.
"Everyone's waiting for me," he said to himself.
"I can't keep them hanging any longer."
Unbeknownst to him, he was already late.
Drifting across the ocean could have been tedious, even boring.
But not for Luffy.
Thanks to his ability to read the consciousness of creatures around him, his journey was anything but lonely.
He chatted nonstop with fish, birds, and even the occasional Sea King that crossed his path.
Their conversations were lively and full of surprises.
"You humans!"
"My scar was caused by your kind," growled a Sea King, its deep voice rumbling in Luffy's mind.
"One time, I was searching for a mate, but the humans noticed me."
"They intercepted my sonic waves and captured me."
The Sea King's thoughts connected with Luffy's brainwaves seamlessly, allowing the two to communicate effortlessly.
This was only possible thanks to Luffy's unique abilities.
Without them, such a conversation would have been unthinkable.
"Hmm," Luffy muttered thoughtfully, nodding as he listened to the creature's story.
He'd nicknamed the Sea King "Old Turtle" because of its shell-like appearance.
"Old Turtle," Luffy said, grinning.
"From the looks of it, you're pretty powerful—probably worth a few hundred million berries at least!"
"It must've taken some serious pirates to hurt you like that."
He glanced around at the surrounding waters.
"This area seems pretty remote. Not many islands or humans around here."
The Sea King rumbled in agreement, and their conversation continued, each new story adding color to Luffy's otherwise monotonous voyage.
Pirates were relatively scarce in these waters.
"Heh!"
Old Turtle chuckled.
"Guess I was just unlucky.
"Ran into someone too tough to handle."
With a heavy sigh, he continued,
"Ah, forget it!"
"No point talking about it now."
"I'm done feeding myself, and it's time to feed my little ones."
"My wife just gave birth, and the kids need a lot of food."
The massive Sea King glanced at Luffy.
"Alright, young man, I'm off.
"Take care! Bye-bye!"
With a flick of his tail, Old Turtle swam away, his massive form slowly disappearing into the horizon.
Luffy didn't try to stop him.
He just watched the Sea King's retreating figure with a helpless shrug.
To be honest, Luffy had considered eating Old Turtle.
After all…
The Sea King's strength was impressive, and consuming it might've given Luffy a slight boost in power.
But after hearing his story, Luffy was moved.
"Man, that's tough," he muttered to himself.
"Life is hard enough for us humans, but even Sea Beasts have it rough."
Shaking his head, he sighed again.
"Poor guy."
"Hmm?"
Luffy suddenly noticed something unusual overhead.
A shadow zipped across the sky—a delivery bird carrying newspapers.
"The Morgan News Company, huh?"
Luffy recognized it immediately.
He raised his hand, summoning the bird with his Haki.
In an instant, the bird was under his control, fluttering down to hand him a freshly printed newspaper.
Luffy grabbed it, thanking the bird with a grin before settling down to read.
A few minutes later, he burst into laughter.
Apparently, something interesting had caught his eye.
"Not bad!" Luffy said, smirking.
"So they've already set out, huh?
"Good!"
The newspaper detailed a recent Marine operation against the Straw Hat crew.
For the first time, Luffy realized how much time he'd lost.
"Oh well," he said, unconcerned.
"No rush."
"It'll all work out."
He leaned back, slowly flipping through the pages.
The more he read, the more entertained he became.
According to the report, Admiral Kizaru had been intercepted by none other than Silvers Rayleigh, the Dark King himself.
The newspaper described the clash in vivid detail, highlighting how the Admiral had failed to prevent the crew's escape.
Luffy couldn't contain his laughter.
"Kizaru, huh?"
"That guy's just an Admiral, and he doesn't even have Conqueror's Haki!"
"And he thought he could take on old man Rayleigh? What a joke!"
He laughed again, shaking his head in disbelief.
"Kizaru must've had a rough time!"
"But hey, it's a good ending for everyone."
He grinned as he read on, finding more confirmation that his crew had successfully left Sabaody Archipelago and was now headed for Fish-Man Island.
Luffy did a quick calculation, his brow furrowing.
"I'm late," he muttered.
"Ridiculously late."
Shaking his head, he sighed deeply.
"I've wasted so much time."
Even if he rushed to Fish-Man Island now, he knew it wouldn't matter.
By the time he arrived, everything would already be over.
He could picture it clearly—his crew would have moved on, continuing their adventure without him.
"Ah well," Luffy said with a resigned shrug.
"Guess there's no helping it."
After some careful thought, he decided on his next move.
"Alright then!" he said, standing up.
"I'll head straight to Dressrosa instead."
Based on the timelines he'd pieced together, it seemed like the perfect place to regroup.
"Yeah, that works," Luffy said, grinning.
Stretching his arms, he let out a loud laugh.
"I feel great! Let's do this!"
He cupped his hands around his mouth, shouting as if his crew could hear him from miles away.
"ZORO!"
"SANJI!"
"NAMI!"
"NICO ROBIN!"
"CHOPPER!"
"USOPP!"
"FRANKY!"
"BROOK!"
He called out each of their names, his voice booming across the empty sea.
With his destination set, Luffy felt a surge of excitement coursing through him.
The journey wasn't over.
Not by a long shot.
Luffy's voice echoed across the open sea, though there was no way anyone could hear him.
Still, that didn't stop him from shouting again, carefree as ever.
"You guys will handle it just fine!"
"I'm counting on you!"
To an outsider, Luffy's words might have seemed puzzling, but his intent was clear.
He had decided not to head to Fish-Man Island.
The enemies there? He trusted his crew to handle them completely.
Especially Zoro.
In Luffy's mind, this would be a perfect training opportunity for the swordsman.
"Zoro could use this as a way to speed up his growth," Luffy said with a nod.
"And Sanji, too."
"Hody Jones isn't a big deal."
"Anyone can take him down easily."
Luffy chuckled confidently, brushing off the challenges his crew might face.
He had no doubt they would triumph without him.
"Fish-Man Island? Piece of cake."
"Punk Hazard? Also simple."
"But Dressrosa…"
Luffy's tone shifted slightly, a rare moment of seriousness crossing his face.
"Now that might be tricky for them."
He clenched his fist.
"That's where I come in."
"I'll make sure Doflamingo gets what's coming to him!"
Luffy grinned widely, his excitement mounting as he thought about the challenge ahead.
"Donquixote Doflamingo, huh?"
"More like Deadbeat Doflamingo."
...
"On to Dressrosa!"
The ocean currents seemed to obey his will, shifting to carry him swiftly toward his new destination.
As he sped along, Luffy couldn't stop laughing, feeling exhilarated at the thought of what lay ahead.
Meanwhile, at MarineHeadquarters…
Inside the Fleet Admiral's office, the sound of a loud crash echoed as Akainu smashed his fist into his desk.
"Damn it!"
He growled, his voice seething with anger.
"That blasted Rayleigh! He's always getting in the way!"
"Two years ago, if it weren't for him, we would've captured the entire Straw Hat crew!"
"That old relic is nothing but trouble."
"I should've killed him when I had the chance!"
Akainu's frustration burned like magma, but Kizaru, leaning casually against the wall, seemed unfazed.
"Come on, Sakazuki," Kizaru said lazily.
"The situation back then was a bit… complicated."
"Rayleigh might be past his prime, but he's still sharp enough to give even an Admiral a hard time."
Kizaru smirked.
"Relax. We'll get our chance eventually."
But Akainu wasn't appeased.
"Hmph!"
"An old-timer like him shouldn't be causing this much trouble."
His tone grew even more serious as he continued,
"You said Straw Hat Luffy wasn't there?
"How do you explain that?"
This question shifted the atmosphere in the room.
Luffy's absence from the battle was peculiar.
As the heart of his crew, he was always present.
The fact that he hadn't shown up was… unusual.
"Exactly," Kizaru replied, his tone still casual but with a hint of curiosity.
"For some reason, Luffy wasn't there."
"There must've been something going on, but I couldn't figure it out."
Akainu inhaled deeply, puffing out smoke as he leaned back, his expression contemplative.
He finally spoke, his voice low and calculated.
"Kizaru, this couldn't be some kind of trick, could it? Maybe the Straw Hats are trying to mislead us, throw us off their trail?"
Kizaru shook his head.
"Not likely. They'd have no reason to do that. Although…"
He paused, reflecting.
"I'll admit, it's odd."
"From Rayleigh's expression during the battle, I'd say something must've happened."
"Something involving Luffy. And when the Straw Hats left, they were in such a hurry. It didn't seem like they were acting."
Akainu nodded, processing the information.
After a moment, he gave his orders.
"Kizaru. Find Luffy."
"I have a bad feeling about this."
"If he's separated from his crew…"
"And even Rayleigh isn't with him…"
"Then he's vulnerable."
Akainu's eyes glinted with determination.
"When you find him… Make sure he doesn't get away. Straw Hat Luffy is a threat we can't afford to ignore."
