Chapter 5: Sleep
“…Phew. This should be enough.”
I would have an easier time if I had a tool like a lighter to start a fire, but unfortunately, I only have a knife.
So, I had to collect hard and soft wood and dry leaves, branches, and bark for tinder.
It was a short search that took less than an hour, but it was enough to check the surroundings of the cave.
This forest seemed to have giant hamsters, rabbits, and boars as its inhabitants.
Most of the wild animals looked no different from the ones in the world I came from, but I wondered if they could use magic or something.
But there was no guarantee that there were no monsters that only came out at night.
I decided to return to the cave before it got completely dark.
I could get back to the cave without getting lost, but the bleakness of it was a bit depressing.
Well, I guess I’ll make a fire and distract myself from today.
I made a small hole on a soft wooden board and cut a thin groove next to it.
This groove made it easier for the sparks generated by friction to accumulate.
Then, I inserted a hard wooden stick into the hole and quickly moved it back and forth with both hands.
I felt like I was using a drill as I created heat by friction, and the sparks from the wooden board gathered in the groove and formed a small ember.
Here, I transferred the ember to a dry leaf and gently blew on it to make the weak flame grow.
Once the fire caught, I started with thin branches and gradually moved to thicker ones until I had a decent fire to warm myself.
“…Indeed, it went better than I expected for the first time.”
This must be what the god meant by “things will go a little better.”
The cave had little wind, so it should be safe for the night.
I was dissatisfied, but I thanked god as I lay down and closed my eyes.
I thought I couldn’t sleep after experiencing such a leap of civilization, but before I knew it, I had lost consciousness.
I slept soundly without any dreams, but I woke up to the gentle light that penetrated the cave, something that human hands could not reproduce.
“Ah…I guess I avoided a game over on the first day.”
I had gathered some grass and laid it down but still slept on the hard ground.
My joints were a little sore.
I noticed that I was thirsty and reached for the plastic bottle, which was my only lifeline.
“I’m out of water…”
The water in the 500ml plastic bottle was also down to the last two sips.
The tension may have worn off, but I was really hungry.
I had let my guard down after finding a place to stay, but I had to find food to survive today.
God probably wanted me to work hard on that, too.
He said it would be easier to make weapons, too.
So, as they say, haste makes waste, and I quickly left the cave, but…
“It’s bright…”
A cloudless blue sky.
Something like the sun shone, blessing the world and illuminating every leaf.
If I were the old me, I would have turned around and holed up at this moment.
But this was another world.
No one knew me, nor anyone I knew.
I didn’t have to worry about being rejected or being seen by others.
I would find and nurture a new self here and live leisurely.
With that in mind, I didn’t feel annoyed by the sunlight but moved by the energy that rose from within.
My goal today was to secure food and water, but water was the priority.
Both were essential, but water had more uses, and I could survive without food if I had to.
I decided on my goal and walked straight in the opposite direction from yesterday for about the same distance.
I postponed the detailed search and tried to scour every place I could find for a water source.
