Chapter 57: Chapter 57: Extreme Speed Conference Begins
On the lush green grasslands, numerous Trainers and Falcon City residents had gathered, creating a sea of people. As one of Falcon City's major events, the Extreme Speed Conference annually attracted many Trainers.
Each participating Trainer could only use one Pokémon to ensure that familiar Pokémon wouldn't collaborate, maintaining competitive balance.
The Extreme Speed Conference prohibited certain moves, as some abilities significantly boost speed within a short time, such as Quick Attack or even more advanced moves like Agility.
While the conference primarily focuses on speed, it also tests the courage, intelligence, and competitive spirit of the Pokémon. Apart from moves specifically designed to enhance speed being banned, any other techniques aimed at disrupting opponents are allowed.
This has been a longstanding tradition of the Extreme Speed Conference. Initially, it was solely about pure speed until a Trainer's Ninjask, utilizing its Ability acceleration, effortlessly dominated and secured first place. Consequently, rules were introduced allowing interference and hindrance of opponents during the competition.
Banning Pokemon with acceleration Abilities from participating would be unfair to many Trainers, as some Pokemon naturally possess exceptional speed, like Ninjask. If their eligibility were denied solely due to acceleration Abilities, it would undermine the essence of the Extreme Speed Conference.
The Extreme Speed Conference is about racing, not just raw speed; competition takes precedence over sheer velocity, which has always been its fundamental rule.
Each year, a few Trainers bring Ninjasks to compete in the conference. However, obtaining a Ninjask requires capturing an Earth Dwelling Ninja first.
Earth Dwelling Ninjas themselves aren't particularly strong, and evolving them into Ninjasks demands considerable time and training. Consequently, most Trainers' Earth Dwelling Ninjas haven't evolved by the time the Extreme Speed Conference begins.
Nevertheless, possessing a fully-evolved Ninjask allows for relatively easy advancement through the early rounds of the conference. In the previous edition, a Ninjask even reached the final round but was unfortunately defeated by a Swellow, equally swift, using Flying Type moves.
Without direct commands from Trainers, the autonomy of the Pokemon becomes crucial—a distinctive feature unique to the Extreme Speed Conference.
Kalia and Julian stood amidst the crowd, with some time left before the conference began. Many Trainers gathered together, discussing various strategies.
"So many Flying Type Pokémon," Kalia observed, scanning the surroundings. Since the event originated as the Flight Conference, flying-type Pokémon have historically dominated each year's competition.
Among them, Pidgeotto and Staravia were most common. However, there were also less frequently seen species like Golbat, Masquerain, and Emolga.
Apart from Flying Types, several other attribute Pokémon were present in significant numbers, such as Raticate, Linoone, Voltorb, and Ponyta.
These speed-oriented Pokémon emerged as strong contenders likely to advance deep into the rounds of this Extreme Speed Conference.
"I hope we at least make it past the first round this time. There are so many formidable Pokémon here," Rosa expressed pessimistically. While his Pidgeotto was competent, he noticed numerous Trainers had similar Pokémon, along with rare flying-types, making the competition intense.
The Extreme Speed Conference this year was as lively as ever, but most Trainers were merely participating for experience. Limited resources prevented some from capturing rare Pokémon.
Nearly one-third of the Trainers had either Pidgeotto or Staravia. The remaining participants were largely spectators hoping for a stroke of luck, while only a small group specifically trained their Pokémon solely for the Extreme Speed Conference.
Kalia's confidence waned as she learned more about her competition, realizing the significant gap between them. Her Grovyle's level was too low, and its speed hadn't fully developed yet.
However, Kalia still felt assured about advancing through the first round, knowing that Grovyle held its own against many other Trainers' Pokémon.
Lian followed closely behind Kalia. He had grown considerably taller now, although not exceptionally so, reaching just over a meter—about a head taller than Grovyle.
As he observed the other Trainers' Pokémon, Lian analyzed the overall skill level at the conference. His mood grew increasingly serious with each observation; several Pokémon displayed exceptional speed, and if they were even slightly higher in level, they might surpass him.
Among the most threatening were undoubtedly Swellow and Ninjask. Swellow had a remarkable speed base stat of 120, with its evolution level requiring only Level 22.
Currently, if Lian competed against Swellow, even a slightly higher level would make it faster than him. As for Ninjask, boasting a speed base stat of 160, it was undeniably the swiftest Pokemon at the Extreme Speed Conference, needing just Level 20 to evolve.
Apart from Swellow and Ninjask, Lian felt confident against the others. With his current speed base stat already at 120, he had achieved the maximum potential for that value.
Typically, any Pokemon with a speed base stat below 100 and not exceeding Level 25 would be unable to outpace Lian, unless they also possessed a similar system or reached their own speed limit.
"Securing first place might be quite challenging," Lian mused, feeling slightly troubled. However, there was still hope. The Extreme Speed Conference did not prohibit Pokemon from initiating attacks, and other Pokemon could retaliate as well, which opened up strategic opportunities for him.
As time passed, the competition arena was set up, featuring a vast space wide enough for ten Pokemon to race simultaneously. The rules were straightforward: the use of speed-boosting moves, medications, or items within a short duration was prohibited. Pokemon battles were allowed, and the first Pokemon to reach the destination would advance to the next round.
The race involved traversing the entire Sapphire Grasslands, starting from the western edge and swiftly running or flying towards the eastern side. Along the way, specialized Pokemon would interfere and obstruct the competitors.
A total of 500 participating Pokemon competed, with each group consisting of ten Pokemon, resulting in fifty groups overall. In just the first round, hundreds of Pokemon would be eliminated, making the competition fiercely intense.
Soon, the opening ceremony of the Extreme Speed Conference commenced. After enduring a barrage of meaningless speeches by Falcon City's high-ranking officials, Gym Leader Kas of the Falcon City Gym made his appearance.
Kas, not only the Gym Leader of Falcon City but also one of the organizers of the Extreme Speed Conference, appeared annually at this event to deliver motivational words and inspire Trainers.
After Kas delivered his motivational speech, the Trainers erupted in enthusiastic applause, officially marking the commencement of the Extreme Speed Conference.
Subsequently, numerous Trainers began receiving numbered identification stickers to place on their participating Pokemon. Each sticker had a unique code for easy distinction during the competition.
Lian observed the sticker with number 35 affixed to Julian's Charmeleon. While Kalia was distracted, Lian stealthily swapped the numbered sticker onto himself and exchanged positions with Julian's Charmeleon.
"Just keep sleeping, and when you wake up, eat," Lian instructed. His own favorite activities were sleeping and eating; as long as Julian's Charmeleon followed this routine, constantly alternating between eating and sleeping, it would be challenging for Kalia to distinguish between the two similar-looking Charmeleons.
Julian's Charmeleon nodded in agreement. Then, Lian quickly joined Julian, silently following behind him as they awaited the start of the competition.
Kalia didn't notice anything amiss, merely seeing Charmeleon lying down sound asleep. Unconcerned, she focused her attention on the upcoming Extreme Speed Conference.
