Pokemon : I Am A Breeder/Champion

Chapter 2: 2. I Have An Egg That Has Been Soaked In Water

Evan was immediately confused by the professor's words.

Then he felt a little embarrassed.

"Yeah, I don't have the money to buy eggs."

"A lot happened at the orphanage, and all the money for eggs was spent."

"So now I don't have the money to continue being a Trainer."

"After all, you can't be a Trainer without money."

When saying this, Evan didn't seem too regretful.

His previous dream had been to become a Trainer.

But now that he had seen the reality clearly, Evan said that he only wanted to make money.

The professor's name was Ethan.

Evan's words left Professor Ethan silent.

He couldn't quite respond to that.

"Alright."

"I understand."

"If you're so determined, I won't say more."

"But now that you've graduated..."

"I still need to give you a Pokémon egg."

Hearing this, Evan was about to refuse.

Then Professor Ethan added quickly.

"It's free!"

When Evan heard this, he swallowed his refusal.

No money required.

That's good.

In that case, he might as well keep it as a pet.

You see, raising a Pokémon in this world isn't that simple.

Besides financial issues, you also need certification.

What kind of certification?

Trainer qualification, breeder qualification, university diploma, etc...

Without a license, your Pokémon is considered illegal.

After all, Pokémon have strong combat abilities.

Even the smallest Caterpie can poison you if you're not careful.

After arriving in this world, Evan learned all of its rules.

Although Evan wanted to complain about needing a certificate just to raise a Pokémon, he had no choice.

Without a certificate, you can't even buy a Poké Ball.

Sure, you could get them on the black market, but...

Well, let's just say they're a little unreliable.

Don't ask how he knew.

Like the time a Pidgey, hit by a rock and concussed, couldn't even fit inside one. And they still called that a Poké Ball?

It was a scam, plain and simple.

In this world, the only way to buy genuine Poké Balls is from stores run by the Pokémon League.

Anything bought elsewhere is definitely fake!

While there are several brands of Poké Balls, they're all backed by the League.

The ones on the black market? Probably defective.

After all, Poké Balls are made of rare materials and involve space manipulation.

They're not cheap like in the games, where you can get thousands for completing random tasks.

Here, Poké Balls are expensive.

And the currency? It's the same as the one from Evan's previous life.

The official price for a Poké Ball is 500.

When you're trying to catch a Pokémon, if it doesn't work out...

That's 500 down the drain.

So yeah, being a Trainer is a costly profession.

Evan even thought, *A Trainer? Growlithe's not the only one barking, it's me too!*

That's something only the wealthy could afford.

For Evan, a kid who grew up in a poor orphanage, his current goal was to return there, take over the place, become a big landowner, and work as an online writer!

Maybe when he made some money, he could think about becoming a Trainer.

As for any special advantages, Evan had given up on that.

A garbage system, wasting his youth!

Everything those novels said was a lie.

...

Free stuff usually came with a catch.

Professor Ethan handed Evan an egg.

Looking at it, there was a red star on the surface, with some strange lines running across it. It almost looked like it had been soaked in water.

At first glance, it seemed like a broken egg.

Evan was confused.

"Professor, what's up with this thing?"

"Why does it look like it's been soaked in water?"

"Is it a Water-type?" Evan asked, confused.

"No, this pattern is clearly Fire-type!" Professor Ethan replied.

This was outrageous.

Evan mentally sorted through the list of Water + Fire Pokémon.

"Could it be..." he muttered, eyes lighting up. "Is this Volcanion's egg?"

For a moment, he couldn't believe it. Was the professor about to give him a Mythical Pokémon?

Hearing Evan's speculation, Professor Ethan suddenly looked incredulous.

"What are you thinking?"

"Volcanion? Do you want me to give you Arceus too while I'm at it?"

Professor Ethan was speechless. If he had Volcanion, what would he be doing as a professor? He'd have been a Champion long ago!

...

Evan's brief excitement quickly faded, disappointment washing over him. So, it really *had* been soaked in water.

This world had already discovered everything—there were 18 types, and the existence of Mythical Pokémon was well-known. There were no historical gaps here like in some stories. Even Mega Evolution existed.

Because of that, Evan's dreams of showing off with something revolutionary were dashed. No chance of writing a groundbreaking paper on Feebas evolution or anything like that. This world had thousands of years of history and research behind it. Everything had already been studied.

So, Evan's path to becoming a Professor was cut off before it even began. And to make matters worse, he had to actually study hard just to keep up. Otherwise, there was so much he wouldn't understand.

This is why Evan considered himself the unluckiest time traveler ever. No opportunities to show off, a broken system, and nothing going his way. Even the money he had saved since childhood was spent on various issues.

His path to becoming a Trainer was blocked too.

Plus, Evan hadn't had a proper meal in a long time.

(╥╯^╰╥)

...

Professor Ethan handed the egg to Evan and spoke seriously:

"Even though this egg was fished out of the water, it's a Fire-type Pokémon egg. It can still hatch, and the signs of life are normal."

"It's a Charmander egg."

"You understand what that means, right?"

Evan blinked, stunned for a moment, then hesitantly said, "But it was soaked in water..."

...

"It'll hatch just fine, even after being soaked. There's nothing wrong with its genes."

"Do you want it or not? If you don't, just give it back," Professor Ethan said, clearly annoyed.

It was free, after all—what more did Evan want? And it was still a starter Pokémon's egg. Even if it had been soaked, it was still from one of the coveted starter families.

If Evan didn't want it, there would be plenty of others who would. He could easily sell it for hundreds of thousands if he wanted. If Evan hadn't been a student he was proud of, Professor Ethan wouldn't have given him the egg.

Though Evan had given up on being a Trainer, his talent was undeniable. Plus, Professor Ethan knew Evan loved Pokémon. Once the egg hatched, the Pokémon would be in good hands.

That's why he gave the egg to him.

...

"I want it!" Evan said quickly. "Why wouldn't I? I'll take it home and keep it as a pet."

Evan accepted the egg without hesitation.

Free things weren't to be wasted.

Besides, Evan knew how to make basic Pokéblocks. If he didn't aim for extreme battle prowess, raising one or two Pokémon as pets wouldn't be a problem.

The orphanage's orchard had enough raw materials to make Pokéblocks. In the future, Evan could even set up a production line with the kids at the orphanage... Ahem, he meant *they could make money together*.
