Chapter 32: 32. Too Expensive
Sophia took out her mobile phone, then looked at Evan eagerly and said:
"Evan, please tell me all the materials you need."
"I'll ask someone to get them right away."
"I'll try to get them for you as soon as possible."
Hearing her offer, Evan nodded. Without hesitation, he began listing some of the materials he needed.
"The nectar from Vespiquen's body—the same nectar it uses to captivate other Pokémon—I need this. It takes about ten kilograms to last for a month."
"Then, the fruits on Tropius's neck that resemble bananas. They must be fresh and cannot be picked for more than 24 hours."
"Any longer, and they're useless."
"I also need Soft Sand—around 30 kilograms of it. You should have no problem getting these, right?"
Hearing Evan's request, Sophia nodded.
"No problem."
"These are easy to get."
"Anything else?"
The mentioned items didn't seem too difficult for her to obtain, so she remained confident.
Evan continued, "Sitrus Berry, Enigma Berry, Persim Berry, Rawst Berry, Hondew Berry, Haban Berry—I'll need some of each. Also, I need golden Nanab Berry and golden Pinap Berry. These two are rare and hard to find on the market, so please do your best to get them."
"Lastly, I need a Dragon Skull. This is the most important item. Can you get it?"
The final request was the hardest to fulfill—it was also the core requirement.
A Dragon Skull, as the name suggests, is the remains of a Dragon-type Pokémon. It holds immense energy.
Evan planned to use a specialized process to extract the energy and incorporate it into the creation of top-tier Pokéblocks.
Ordinary people couldn't easily acquire such a thing. Even in the wild, they are rare, and collectors often pay exorbitant sums to obtain them.
In truth, finding one is as rare as winning the lottery. Dragon-type Pokémon are uncommon, and their remains even more so.
Discovering a Dragon's Den—or, even more impressively, a Dragon's Tomb—could provide access to several such relics.
However, taking bones from these locations comes with grave risks. Dragon Pokémon are fiercely protective of their kin and would relentlessly pursue anyone who desecrated their sacred grounds.
Even when available on the market, Dragon Skulls are few and far between. It all depended on whether Sophia could locate one.
If she couldn't, not even Evan could proceed.
When Sophia heard Evan's final request, her brows furrowed deeply.
"A Dragon Skull?" she said, her tone filled with concern. "This is going to be tricky."
Sophia was feeling a bit uneasy.
Dragon Skulls were exceedingly rare, and obtaining one was no small feat.
After thinking for a moment, she pulled out her phone and said decisively:
"I'll ask my grandpa. He might have one."
...
Evan was speechless upon hearing this.
All he could think was how nice it must be to have connections and resources.
Shaking his head slightly at the thought, he nodded and said:
"That's all I need."
"If you can get it, I can start preparing Garchomp-specific Pokéblocks for you immediately."
"If not, we'll have to wait. Let's discuss it later if that's the case."
Evan shrugged. There was no workaround—this ingredient was irreplaceable.
The recipe demanded it, and nothing else would suffice.
Sophia nodded in understanding.
"Give me two minutes."
She stepped aside and quickly made a phone call.
Evan waited patiently as Sophia explained the situation to her grandfather.
Moments later, a smile spread across her face.
She returned and said excitedly, "Evan, my grandfather has one!"
"He said he'll have it sent over soon."
"Will that work for you?"
Hearing this, Evan nodded, a bit stunned.
"Ah… yes!"
"That will do perfectly."
"If he could also have it ground into powder before sending it, that would be ideal."
"Otherwise, I'll be in trouble."
Sophia nodded thoughtfully at Evan's words and didn't hesitate. She pulled out her phone again and sent another message to her grandfather, asking him to grind the Dragon Skull into powder before sending it over.
Along with the request, she also included a detailed list of additional materials.
After some consideration, she decided to add more items to the list.
She requested a variety of berries commonly found on the market, reasoning that Evan would likely find them useful.
Once everything was arranged, Sophia turned back to Evan, her expression eager.
"Evan, let's discuss the price now."
"How much will it cost for enough Pokéblocks to last Garchomp a month?"
Hearing this, Evan rolled his eyes.
"Most of the materials are coming from you."
"How much can I charge you for that? It's basically just a processing fee."
He sighed, muttering under his breath, "This feels like a loss."
After all, setting too high a price could complicate the deal.
Sophia caught on quickly and smiled warmly.
"It doesn't need to be like that."
"The berries aren't expensive—we grow them at home."
"The valuable items, like the Soft Sand and Dragon Skull, and even the nectar and Tropius fruit, all come from Pokémon we've raised ourselves."
"It doesn't cost us much at all."
"So, Evan, Senior, you can calculate the price as you see fit."
Evan considered her words for a moment before replying, "In that case, I won't hold back."
"The customized Pokéblocks for your Garchomp will cost 600,000 Pokédollars for a month's supply."
"As for the Dragon Skull, I'm guessing it's fairly large, so I'll charge you an additional 300,000 Pokédollars."
"That should cover everything for now. The rest of the materials can be stored for future use."
"I'll make a month's supply for now and return any unused materials to you."
He added, "To be honest, the next Dragon Skull will probably also go toward making Pokéblocks for your Garchomp."
"The materials you've provided should last a while. We can calculate costs for any future work when the time comes."
Sophia smiled at the arrangement, but Evan couldn't help but reflect on how expensive this endeavor was.
Top-tier trainers like Sophia spent staggering amounts on maintaining their Pokémon.
Providing for six Pokémon could easily cost tens of millions of Pokédollars a month—hundreds of millions a year.
Without the support of the Pokémon League, even Elite trainers would struggle to afford it.
Many would be forced to use standard-grade Pokéblocks instead of premium ones.
It made sense why even champions sought endorsements and competed for sponsorship deals.
Producing top-tier Pokéblocks wasn't just labor-intensive—it was extraordinarily expensive.
The base cost alone was several million Pokédollars, and some materials were so rare that even acquiring them was an ordeal.
If it weren't for Sophia's help in securing the ingredients, Evan might not have agreed to this task at all.
The costs were simply too high.
