"Beedrill, use Poison Sting!"
Despite sensing the strength of Tyson's Charmeleon, Il showed no intention of giving up and commanded his Beedrill to attack first.
Unfortunately, with such a significant difference in strength, no amount of strategy could bridge the gap.
"Charmeleon, Flamethrower!" Tyson ordered.
A scorching pillar of fire surged forth, incinerating Beedrill's poisoned stingers mid-flight. The intense heatwave forced Beedrill to retreat, interrupting its attempt to launch another move.
"Charmeleon, use Ember—don't give it a chance to recover!"
The momentum shifted as Charmeleon unleashed a relentless barrage of embers. Beedrill, unable to evade the continuous stream of sparks, had no opportunity to counterattack.
Inevitable defeat loomed as Beedrill's wings were clipped by the fiery onslaught.
"Finish it! Charmeleon, Flamethrower!"
Taking advantage of Beedrill's loss of balance, Charmeleon unleashed another devastating Flamethrower. The fiery column enveloped Beedrill, knocking it out with smoke rising from its scorched body.
The referee raised his hand. "Beedrill is unable to battle! Charmeleon wins!"
Tyson gave Charmeleon a congratulatory pat before stepping off the battlefield to observe other trainers' matches. His focus was on scouting elite-level or stronger Pokémon among the competition.
As battles raged on, Tyson used his system's analytical abilities to identify high-level Pokémon with remarkable precision. After spotting two trainers with elite-level Pokémon, Tyson reconsidered his plans to vie for the championship.
"Charmeleon's strong, but it's impossible to leap from advanced-level strength to elite-level overnight," Tyson thought to himself.
Realizing this, he relaxed his competitive mindset. Instead, he resolved to enjoy the tournament, aiming to defeat as many opponents as possible and earn mission points before his inevitable elimination.
Afternoon Battles
The second round of preliminaries began after lunch. This time, Tyson's match was scheduled mid-afternoon. Having already analyzed the morning's battles, Tyson felt confident heading into his next round.
"Let the battle begin!" the referee announced.
"Charmeleon, Ember!" Tyson commanded, wasting no time.
This time, his opponent, Crewe, sent out a Persian with advanced-level strength. Tyson knew he couldn't underestimate Crewe and focused on maintaining pressure from the start.
"Persian, dodge and counter with Bite!" Crewe responded quickly.
However, Charmeleon's Ember attack blanketed the battlefield in flames, leaving Persian with few escape options. Forced to defend itself, Persian used Fury Swipes to counter the incoming sparks.
With its Technician ability boosting its moves, Persian's swipes proved effective but couldn't match Charmeleon's relentless offense.
"Charmeleon, Dragon Breath!"
A green mist of energy surged toward Persian, forcing it to leap sideways to avoid the attack.
"Now's your chance, Charmeleon—Flamethrower!"
Tyson seized the opening. Charmeleon's powerful Flamethrower struck Persian mid-air, leaving it scorched and vulnerable.
"Keep up the pressure with Ember!" Tyson ordered.
The barrage of embers pinned Persian down, leaving Crewe no room to counter.
"Persian, hold on! Use Scratch to create an opening!" Crewe shouted, desperate to turn the tide.
But Persian's scorched state weakened its movements. When it finally launched forward with a Bite, Charmeleon met it with a precise Slash attack.
The battle reached its conclusion as Charmeleon unleashed a final Flamethrower, sending Persian flying across the battlefield.
"Persian is unable to battle! Charmeleon wins!" the referee declared.
Post-Battle Reflections
The first day of preliminaries concluded with Tyson securing multiple victories. However, he didn't stay to watch the remaining matches. Instead, he returned to the Pokémon Center to focus on training.
Charmeleon was granted a lighter training load after its strenuous battles, but Eevee worked tirelessly to push toward advanced-level strength. Eevee's goal was clear: to fight alongside Charmeleon in the semi-finals.
Meanwhile, abra, as usual, slept peacefully, unconcerned about training.
A Shady Encounter
At the base of Mount Moon, two shadowy figures leaned against a tree trunk, their eyes scanning their surroundings.
"How's the preparation going?" one asked.
"Almost done. We just need a little more time to finalize everything," the other replied, their voice low.
"Good. Stay here and keep watch. We'll act soon—we can't risk delaying any longer."
The two exchanged nods before one turned to gaze at the looming mountain, eyes gleaming with ambition.
The Second Day of Preliminaries
The final day of the preliminary rounds began with Tyson ready to face his next opponent.
When Lori saw that her opponent was Tyson, her expression darkened.
Her chosen Pokémon, an Ivysaur, faced a significant type of disadvantage against Charmeleon. Unlike Ash, not every trainer could overcome type disadvantages with sheer skill and determination.
"Let's do our best, Ivysaur!" Lori called out, trying to stay optimistic despite the odds.
