Chapter 39: Chapter 39: Double Evolution! Alakazam!
"So, your Xatu needs to train for performance," Gary remarked. "Don't worry; this training won't take too long. Xatu's performance growth has limits, and one or two months of hard training should be enough."
Sabrina nodded. "Yeah." She agreed, though she didn't particularly care about her Pokémon's physical abilities. Still, it was for the benefit of her Xatu.
In regular battles, Sabrina often relied on her Psychic abilities, but in official competitions, using Psychic to assist in battles was prohibited.
"By the way, Sabrina, how did you use Psychic to evolve your Abra into Xatu?" Gary suddenly asked, observing Xatu's performance training.
Gary had been watching his own Abra, which had reached level 20, surpassing the evolution requirements. He wondered if Abra might be able to evolve soon. This would allow him to train its physical strength earlier, which would be beneficial for its growth. The longer the delay in evolving, the harder it would be to train certain abilities.
Sabrina looked at her Abra and replied, "Abra can evolve at any time, as long as it wants to. I simply used telepathy to tell Abra to evolve."
Gary was startled. "Is that so?" he said, walking over to his own Abra. "Abra, can you evolve?"
"Jiji!" Abra responded with a nod, its eyes sparkling with curiosity. It was capable of evolving whenever it wished, but it had kept its current form because it liked the Contest Condition it was in.
Gary was a bit taken aback. He was worried that, like Ash's Bulbasaur, this Abra might not want to evolve. If that was the case, it could cause trouble later on, as Abra was far more powerful and valuable than Bulbasaur.
"Abra, why don't you evolve?" Gary asked again.
"Jiji!" Abra sent a telepathic message directly to Gary, revealing that it had been waiting for Sabrina's permission to evolve. It hadn't evolved because Sabrina had not consented yet.
Gary smiled softly. "Now you're my Pokémon. You don't need to ask for Sabrina's approval. You can evolve when you're ready."
Abra looked nervously at Sabrina, seeking her approval. Though it had been handed over to Gary, Sabrina still held a special place in Abra's heart. It wasn't easy for Abra to shake off that connection.
Sabrina's voice was firm. "Look at what I'm doing. You're Gary's Pokémon now. You have to listen to him."
Abra felt a pang of hurt. It was as if it had been abandoned by Sabrina. Yet, it also realized that Gary was treating it well, so it slowly accepted the situation.
Though the bond with Gary was still new, Abra was determined to prove its worth to earn Gary's full trust. It thought about the other Pokémon Gary had, all of whom were adorable and strong. If it didn't work hard, it would surely be overlooked.
Feeling a new surge of energy, Abra's body began to glow with incandescent light as it activated its evolutionary process. Its height increased, and its body became more muscular and defined. The light dissipated, revealing Xatu, holding a spoon and looking far more alert than before.
"Not bad," Gary said as he patted Xatu on the shoulder. He activated his Eye of Insight to check its attributes.
[Pokémon: Brawlhalla]
[Attribute: Psychic]
[Level: 20]
[Potential: Quasi-Elite]
[Ability: Inner Focus (Prevents flinching and intimidation effects)]
[Skills: Teleport, Confusion, Psybeam, Reflect, Miracle Eye]
[Intimacy: 140 (max value: 255)]
Gary was impressed. Xatu had evolved into a Brawlhalla (the evolutionary form of Abra) and awakened four new skills at once, including Miracle Eye. Sabrina's own Brawlhalla hadn't awakened this skill, so Gary felt lucky. However, he noticed that Xatu's intimacy with him had increased by only 30 points after evolving. Normally, Pokémon intimacy would increase by around 50 points after evolution, but it seemed that Xatu still held strong ties to Sabrina, as it had been her Pokémon before Gary took it in.
"Looks like we're off to a good start," Gary said, making a mental note of their progress.
"Gary, when do you plan to evolve Xatu into Alakazam?" Sabrina asked. It was clear that she had been thinking about the next step in her Pokémon's development.
Gary didn't hesitate. "Are you planning to evolve Xatu into Alakazam so soon?"
"Yes, it will evolve sooner or later," Sabrina replied. "I don't mind when it happens. The sooner it evolves, the better, right?"
Gary nodded. "That's right. Evolving into Alakazam sooner will help Xatu adapt to its new form more quickly. Alakazam is a powerful Psychic-type, and the sooner Xatu evolves, the sooner it can begin adapting to its new abilities."
To evolve Xatu into Alakazam, they needed to perform a special connection exchange. This process would trigger a physical and mental transformation in Xatu, allowing it to evolve and unlock even greater powers.
"Alright then," Sabrina said. "Let's head to Vermilion City and do the exchange."
Two days later, Gary and Sabrina rode together to Vermilion City. This city, located on the southern coast of the Kanto region, was a major seaport and a bustling center for trade, auctions, and Pokémon battles.
At the Pokémon Center in Vermilion City, the two Trainers handed their Pokémon over to Nurse Joy for care. They left their Poké Balls with Brawlhalla (Abra) and waited for the moment of evolution.
Once the Pokémon were treated, Gary and Sabrina walked over to the machine that would facilitate the evolution exchange. They placed the Poké Balls with their Brawlhalla into the machine's grooves and pressed the activation button. A blue light emerged from the port, and the Poké Balls disappeared in an instant.
The screen on the machine showed the iconic exchange animation as another blue light emanated from the port, and the Poké Balls reappeared.
"Successful exchange!" a voice from the machine announced.
Gary and Sabrina exchanged a glance, then both released their Pokémon at the same time. "Come out, Brawlhalla!"
The two Pokémon emerged from their Poké Balls, and the exchange triggered an intense evolutionary reaction. A blinding white light enveloped both Brawlhallas.
The Trainers, as well as other people in the Pokémon Center, were drawn to the dazzling light of evolution. The energy of the exchange had activated their cells, and the two Brawlhallas instantly evolved.
The two Pokémon's bodies became leaner, and the thick, long tails they once had disappeared, replaced by a more slender form. Their once youthful appearances now looked more mature, and they resembled wise, old sages. Their facial features were similar to those of Brawlhalla, except for the addition of long, golden beards and a pronounced bulge on their foreheads where their brains had grown significantly. They were now fully evolved Alakazams.
"Hu!" the newly evolved Alakazams exhaled deeply, feeling the increase in their psychic power.
Gary smiled at the successful evolution. "Alright, we can exchange them back now."
"Yeah," Sabrina agreed.
The two Trainers returned their Alakazams to their Poké Balls, placed them back into the machine, and completed the final exchange. The Pokémon had evolved, and now the real journey with their new abilities would begin.
As Gary and Sabrina watched their Pokémon, they knew that this was just the beginning of a new phase in their training and evolution journey. Their bond with their Pokémon had only deepened, and together, they would grow even stronger.
