Chapter 67: Chapter 68: Leaving Mt. Moon
After their encounter with Clefairy, Ash and his friends found themselves in another predicament. A swarm of Zubats emerged from the depths of the cave, drawn by the lingering scent of food. Unlike Clefairy's gentle curiosity, the Zubat were aggressive and rushed to snatch the food from Ash and his group.
These Zubat, numbering over twenty, were far more formidable than the Spearow flock Ash had faced earlier. However, Ash and his Pokémon were now much stronger than before.
With the help of Pikachu, Pidgeotto, and Beedrill, Ash successfully repelled the Zubat attack. Despite their numbers, the Zubat retreated. However, in their hasty escape, one Zubat collided with a rock and fainted near their camp.
Initially, Ash intended to release the unconscious Zubat back into the wild. Misty had no interest in capturing it either, but Brock, was intrigued. Brock examined the Zubat and noticed its exhaustion and injuries.
When Zubat eventually woke up, it appeared disoriented. Since Zubat lacked eyes, it relied on Supersonic to sense its surroundings. The feedback it received from its sonar seemed to alarm it, as it realized it had been left behind by its group and was now surrounded by humans.
Sensing Zubat's fear, Brock spoke to it in a calming voice and offered it Pokémon food. Slowly, Zubat's anxiety eased, and it began eating.
Once Zubat had eaten and regained its composure, Brock proposed capturing it. After a moment's hesitation, Zubat agreed, and Brock officially added his first Pokémon to his team since starting his journey.
Meanwhile, Misty hadn't captured any Pokémon since she joined Ash's journey.
With the Zubat incident resolved, the group experienced no further disturbances that evening. They spent the night peacefully and resumed their journey early the next morning.
As they ventured further into Mt. Moon, they encountered more wild Pokémon, including Paras.
Ash, having read about Paras in various Pokédex entries, was intrigued. The mushrooms on Paras's back were more than decorative; they played a significant role in its life cycle. According to the Pokédex, the mushrooms could absorb Paras's nutrients to grow.
Paras's evolution into Parasect was even more alarming. The Pokédex claimed that the mushroom on Parasect's back completely controlled its actions, leaving Parasect without its own consciousness.
However, Brock explained that reality differed from the Pokédex's dramatized descriptions. Paras and Parasect existed in a symbiotic relationship. While the mushroom did influence Parasect's actions, the Pokémon retained a degree of its own consciousness.
"The mushrooms actually provide protection for Parasect," Brock elaborated. "They enhance its abilities, allowing it to use moves like Stun Spore and Sleep Powder. It's a mutual relationship, much like two beings sharing one body."
Ash found this perspective fascinating, and the group continued discussing Pokémon biology as they progressed through the cave.
By the afternoon, they finally emerged from Mt. Moon, greeted by the warm sunlight outside. They had reached Route 4, which connected Mt. Moon to Cerulean City.
Route 4 stretched across a vast grassland teeming with common Pokémon from the Kanto region, such as the Pidgey, Spearow, and Rattata families. Occasionally, rarer Pokémon appeared, though their sightings were scarce.
The route was also popular among trainers. As Ash and his friends made their way toward Cerulean City, they passed at least thirty trainers engaged in battles, training, or resting.
"Let's hurry to Cerulean City," Ash urged. "We need to reach the Pokémon Center by tonight."
He felt no need to linger on Route 4, as the upcoming Cerulean Gym challenge didn't require special preparation.
Misty, however, appeared hesitant, lagging behind the group. Her reluctance was unusual compared to her earlier enthusiasm when they left Viridian Forest or headed toward Pewter City.
"I know what you're thinking, Misty," Ash said, turning to her. "You're from Cerulean City, right? Brock told me a bit about it."
"What?!" Misty exclaimed, startled.
"You're the youngest of the four sisters who run the Cerulean Gym, aren't you?" Ash said with a knowing smile.
Misty's face turned red as she glanced at Brock, who nodded. "I might have mentioned it to Ash back at the Pokémon Center near Mt. Moon," Brock admitted.
Misty sighed, clearly conflicted. Before leaving the Cerulean Gym, she had vowed not to return until she became a Water Pokémon Master. Yet, less than a month into her journey, she was already on her way back.
"I get it, Misty," Ash said gently. "I don't know why you left, but I think you should face whatever's waiting for you. Family is important, and I'm sure they'll be happy to see you again."
Misty was visibly torn. Her sisters had always teased her, and she feared they would mock her for returning so soon.
"Look, I know your sisters weren't exactly supportive in the anime I've seen," Ash continued. "But this world is different. I think there's more to them than meets the eye."
Misty looked up, surprised.
"For one, you had a bicycle, right? Those don't come cheap. Even if it wasn't as expensive as the one in the games, it must have cost several thousand yen. I don't think you could've bought that yourself. Your sisters must have given it to you. That doesn't sound like they don't care."
Ash's words gave Misty pause. While she still worried about facing her sisters, she realized Ash might be right. Her sisters, despite their teasing, probably did care for her in their own way.
After some reflection, Misty nodded. "Alright. I'll go back. Even if they laugh at me, I'll face them."
Ash and Brock smiled, proud of her resolve. Together, they quickened their pace toward Cerulean City, ready to face whatever challenges lay ahead.
