Chapter 2 - Part 1 - Magic and Talent

[In this world, there are various types of magic.]

It was a children’s educational program.

The animated illustrations were surprisingly fun to watch.

[Magic was first discovered 200 years ago. Once the existence of magicians was revealed, ancient magical nations, which had been passing down their magic for generations, emerged and made their names known. That was the beginning of the magic culture that has become part of our daily lives.]

A drawing of a witch appeared and disappeared, and the magical illustration in her hand expanded.

A woman’s voice continued.

[Magic, gradually accepted into culture, has now become an inseparable part of our lives. Magic is our culture, our life, our energy, and our power.]

Several new images appeared on the screen.

[The countless types of magic that exist in the world are generally divided into four categories. First, True Magic, composed of pictures and words. Second, Spell Magic, where magic is cast with incantations and names. Third, Elemental Magic, which uses nature’s forces like fire or water. Lastly, Unique Magic, which is created and developed directly by magicians.]

Unique Magic.

Hearing that word, I absentmindedly moved my hand.

It was a pleasant term that resonated deeply with me.

[Among them, Unique Magic is called the symbol of a magician’s power. Unique Magic becomes part of a magician from the moment it is born from their imagination. There are also different types of Unique Magic. There’s the Main Magic, which is central to the magician, Sub Magic, which supports the main magic, and other types of Unique Magic, commonly referred to as Auxiliary magic.]

Unique Magic, born from the magician’s imagination and growing according to it.

To me, it was a mysterious and fascinating concept.

Being born into a magical world was already amazing, but the fact that I could create magic was even more thrilling.

On top of that, the idea that magic was born and developed through imagination?

I constantly found myself wishing I could use magic as soon as possible.

But I knew it was impossible.

Typically, a person begins developing their magic—what’s called their “Main Magic”—no earlier than elementary school.

In the lower grades, they first assess the potential for magic power and begin accumulating it.

From the upper grades, they start learning Spell Magic and other existing magic.

That’s why most people create their Main Magic by the time they reach middle school.

Of course, there are those with above-average talent, what you might call geniuses, who follow a different path…

Currently, I was just a baby, and I couldn’t even sense magic yet.

For me to talk about Unique Magic at this point was absurd.

To create magic, you first have to be able to sense magic, then move it.

Through repetition, you accumulate magic.

Only then can you start using even the basics of existing magic, like Spell Magic or True Magic.

Unique Magic comes after that.

[Magic has now merged with science to achieve remarkable advancements that were once unimaginable.]

The program had shifted to talking about the dazzling advancements in science.

I watched with wide eyes.

Dad came up behind me and sat down with me between his legs.

I turned my heavy head to look at Dad.

When my head wobbled, Dad caught me with both hands.

“Oh dear.”

“Waaah─.”

I made a babyish sound.

Even though my body was a baby’s, my mind wasn’t, so these things felt embarrassing.

I glanced back at the TV.

The broadcast was now talking about “Magicians” and “Non-Magicians.”

Carefully, I glanced at my dad.

He didn’t seem to care.

I fidgeted, thinking.

This world was a world of magic.

Seventy percent of the population were magicians.

Naturally, this meant there were people who weren’t magicians.

A “Non-Magician” was someone who had little to no aptitude for magic or magical power, unable to use magic unless through highly structured spells or True Magic.

In other words, they lacked the talent to create Unique Magic and could only use basic forms of magic.

These people were called “Non-Magicians.”

My dad was a Non-Magician.

Non-Magicians typically worked in non-magical professions or held jobs that had little to do with magic, and my dad was the latter.

Even so, I’d heard he was considered pretty capable among Non-Magicians.

However… This world favors magicians.

Because of that, Non-Magicians tend to be treated with slight disregard.

That made me feel a bit cautious.

Seeing me hesitate, Dad gently smiled and patted my head.

“What kind of magic do you want, Eunha?”

At his words, I glanced at him cautiously and then smiled.

Raising my hand, I spoke in an excited tone.

“Ah-oo──.”

…Although, my words didn’t come out right.

I had so much I wanted to say, but I couldn’t express it.

‘The kind of magic I want…’

In truth, I hadn’t decided what my Main Magic would be.

Ever since I learned about magic, I’d been contemplating it endlessly, but I hadn’t found the one magic that made me think, ‘This is it!’.

Since Main Magic isn’t something you decide lightly, it wasn’t easy.

But there were plenty of types of magic I wanted to learn.

For starters, I absolutely wanted to learn teleportation.

But I didn’t plan to use it as my Main Magic.

I figured it wouldn’t hurt to create it as a backup.

I should also learn clairvoyance.

Do you know how much trouble I went through in my past life just trying to find things without magic?

I should learn tracking magic too.

Despite thinking about all these things, I still hadn’t decided on my Main Magic.

But I had a rough idea.

Whatever magic I created, I wanted my Main Magic to be something that drew upon my imagination to wield great power.

I had been a novelist in my previous life.

If you ask me if that’s why I think this way, yes, you’d be right.

I’d been able to become a novelist thanks to developing my imagination.

So I absolutely wanted magic that was rooted in imagination.

Thinking that way, I felt like I might be onto something.

However, since magic in this world is largely tied to imagination, maybe I’d have an advantage?

With my heart full of anticipation for the future, I giggled to myself.

I tried to utter unfinished words with my clumsy tongue.

“Ba─ba─.”

I was just babbling, but Dad took it differently.

“Huh? Did you just say ‘Dad’? Good job, Eunha!”

Yep.

This is what they call a typical doting dad.

As I lay in my dad’s arms, I thought.

I wonder what kind of magic Dad would’ve wanted.

Of course, that’s something I’ll only ask much later, carefully and hesitantly.

After all, it could be a touchy subject for a Non-Magician like him.

I wished I could decide on the magic I wanted to create soon.

But I wasn’t in a rush.

To be honest, just being born into a world where I could use magic made me so happy.

‘Ihehehe.’

While I was laughing like a witch to myself, the door suddenly burst open, and Mom, dressed neatly, appeared.

She frowned when she saw me and Dad.

“You still haven’t changed Eunha’s clothes? We need to leave soon.”

“Oh, is it that time already?”

“Yes!”

Mom nodded with a pouty expression.

I pricked up my ears at her words.

Meanwhile, Dad, smiling awkwardly, quickly started changing my clothes.

I chuckled at his touch.

In a baby’s body, feeling embarrassed about being undressed meant defeat!

There would be far more embarrassing moments to come…!

Sniff!

Despite trying to brush off the embarrassment, I couldn’t help but smile.

I was excited about where we were going.

Although it wasn’t anything special, I was scheduled to have a special check-up at the hospital today.

Or more precisely, an early development check-up.

After Dad finished dressing me, Mom wrapped me in a baby carrier and held me.

My parents got everything ready and we headed out.

Dad took the wheel and drove.

The scenery outside flashed by.

As I flailed my short arms and legs in excitement, I overheard Mom’s wistful voice.

“If Suna were here, I’d have asked Jungmin to help.”

“Oh, her husband’s a medical magician, right?”

“Yeah, it’s a bit disappointing.”

‘Suna,’ it was a name I hadn’t heard in a while.

I blinked.

The car sped along, and we arrived at a hospital in a quiet area.

Unlike the peaceful exterior, the inside was bustling with people.

After waiting in Mom’s arms, we were called into the examination room.

Inside were a doctor in a white coat and a nurse sitting beside him.

“Hello, I’m Yoo Jinhwan. I made a reservation.”

“Yes, you’re here for the early development of your baby’s magic flow, correct?”

“Yes, this is my child.”

I blushed slightly as I looked at the doctor.

My heart pounded.

Magic flow development was a procedure for young children to help their magical potential bloom earlier.

Most children undergo this procedure at least once.

It’s usually performed after they turn one year old, and it’s recommended between the ages of one and three.

However, this procedure involved circulating magic through the body’s magic pathways, unblocking them, which only doctors highly knowledgeable about the human body could do.

Because of that, it was quite expensive.

“What’s the baby’s name?”

“It’s Eunha.”

“Alright. Hello, Eunha.”

I fumbled slightly as I tried to move my lips.

Aoeoe…

At this point, that’s all I could say.

Of course, the doctor couldn’t understand me.

“Please take off the baby’s top and lay her here.”

“Okay.”

I frowned slightly at those words, but it couldn’t be helped.

If you got embarrassed about being undressed at the hospital, you lost.

Especially when you’re in a baby’s body…ugh…

I was seated on a baby examination bed.

My buttoned top was unfastened, and my clothes were taken off.

The doctor placed his hand on my back.

I closed my eyes, feeling slightly scared.

Then, I felt a strange sensation from my back.

My eyes widened.

A tickling sensation spread from my back, slowly circulating through my body.

I felt soft, feather-like touches everywhere.

It was warm.

My chest was filled with a sense of wonder and fullness.

“Ah, ah-oo─.”

‘Wow…’

I was in awe.

I instinctively knew—this was magic power.

For reference, there’s a degree of individual variation in how children experience magic flow development.

Some kids feel the magic flowing through their bodies right away, while others only sense it after some time.

Some kids can’t feel it for a while.

Just because a child feels magic being circulated through their magic pathways doesn’t mean they can immediately sense ambient magic.

But it certainly has some impact on the flowering of their talents.

As I marveled to myself, the doctor smiled slightly.

“It seems your daughter has talent. She’s responding well to the magic flow development. While not absolute, I’ve often seen children with this response grow up to be quite powerful magicians.”

“Oh my…”

“Really? That’s a relief.”

“Ah~!”

I laughed aloud at Dad’s words.

I agreed.

It truly was a relief.

To be honest, while I hadn’t yet decided on my Main Magic, I had already thought of two types of magic I wanted to create.

The first was a barrier.

I wanted to develop a barrier magic that could protect me, sever space, or close it off—a magic that manipulates space.

The second was written magic.

I wanted to develop a magic that could manifest things written down into reality.

I wanted to make stories come true.

That was quite a novelist-like idea, wasn’t it?

If I could create a barrier that was my personal domain and write the settings for it with written magic, it felt like I could make my imagination more vividly real.

But even with those two magics, something still felt lacking in realizing my ideal vision.

That’s why I hadn’t decided to make either of them my Main Magic.

I could create a barrier and write settings with written magic.

But then what?

It still felt incomplete.

It was truly a dilemma.

Magicians could create as many Unique Magics as they wanted.

Whether a magician had two or three Main Magics didn’t matter—there were no major restrictions when it came to “creating” magic.

I’d heard that some magicians had dozens of Sub or auxiliary magics.

However, how much magic could be used and how powerful it could become depended entirely on one’s own abilities.

For now, I planned to make the space-based barrier magic my “Sub” Magic.

Written magic would likely become my “Main.”

Though I hadn’t decided on my Main Magic, hearing that I might have talent, considering how much I’d already contemplated the magic I wanted to create, was incredibly welcome news.

Given that Dad was a Non-Magician, he seemed happy that his daughter had magical talent.

However, Mom had a somewhat ambiguous expression.

“Really…?”

She hesitated slightly as she patted my head.

I looked up at her with curious eyes.

Mom simply smiled at me.

“Are you feeling good, Eunha?”

In response, I burst out laughing again.

Of course, I felt great.

Just the sensation of magic flowing through my body was fascinating and brought me joy.

Experiencing something new that I hadn’t before was thrilling.

In my previous life, while I’d experienced the extraordinary through the goddess’s Pocket Dimension, that was it.

I had no powers I could control with my own hands.

Being able to use magic, something I’d only ever seen in novels, comics, and movies, was an incredible joy.

With an excited heart, I thought, I hope I grow up quickly!

I want to use magic as soon as possible!

I laughed once again.

That night, I had a dream.

I stretched my hand toward the sky, and I could feel something swirling around it.

This sensation was familiar.

Ah, yes, it was magic!

Filled with excitement, I swung my arm.

Then, mysterious lights began to radiate from it.

“Wow─.”

I exclaimed in amazement, my eyes shining.

Maybe because it was a dream, I could speak well.

I wished this dream would become reality soon.

In the dream, I could do anything, but that was just an illusion.

Still, it was a pleasant dream.
