Chapter 7: Listening and Learning
For Yui Yuigahama, the afternoon had been unlike anything she'd ever experienced.
She couldn't stop marveling at Yukino's ability to adapt and Haru's effortless expertise.
It felt like she'd stepped into an entirely new world—and she wasn't sure she ever wanted to leave.
Yui Yuigahama couldn't help but admire him a little.
There was even a trace of youthful wonder, the kind only a high school girl could have.
She'd joined the photography club initially just to get closer to Amamiya Haru, maybe make friends with him.
But after spending the afternoon in the club, her goal shifted.
She liked the atmosphere here.
And she liked how serious Amamiya became when teaching.
Even though Yukinoshita Yukino intimidated her a little, she found that whenever she asked for advice, Yukino was surprisingly generous and thorough.
Well… except for those moments when Yui didn't quite get it. Then Yukino's gaze would shift into something resembling pity, like she was looking at a particularly dense child.
As for the other two girls in the club, Yui got along with them pretty well.
Maybe it was because their eyes sparkled with that same pure, innocent light.
"See you tomorrow, Amamiya-kun, Yukinoshita-san..."
As Yui left, Amamiya and Yukino locked up and headed out as well.
"Straight to my place to see the cat?" Amamiya asked casually.
"Pet store first. I'll grab some treats and biscuits," Yukino replied, her tone perking up at the mention of the cat.
"Geez, you treat the cat better than you treat me. And I'm the one who grew up with you."
"Didn't I get you a gift for your birthday?"
"Yeah, but I gave you chocolate for Valentine's Day."
"Idiot, I gave you a return gift too, didn't I?"
Their usual back-and-forth banter carried them all the way to the pet store. After picking out some snacks for the cat, Yukino's expression softened visibly, a faint smile lingering on her face.
But as they walked home, a group of young men blocked their path.
The leader wore a red headband.
Amamiya immediately recognized him.
It was Banana Guy.
Too familiar, in fact.
This was the same group he'd run into before.
Yukino didn't know any of this, though. Her expression turned serious as she slipped her hand into her pocket, gripping her phone, ready to call for help.
"Relax. I know them," Haru said, noticing her tension.
Yukino gave a quiet "hmm," but her hand stayed on her phone.
The young man in the red headband stepped forward, his face lighting up with excitement.
"Boss! The advice you gave me last time really worked. My stream's been blowing up lately! I even have people clipping my videos now!"
He bowed deeply to Haru, and the others followed suit, echoing their thanks.
The scene drew curious glances from passing pedestrians, who whispered to each other, wondering if this was some kind of gang initiation ceremony.
Haru's expression shifted to something unreadable. "I'm younger than you, though."
The young man only grinned wider. "Doesn't matter! You helped us out so much. Without your advice, who knows how long it would've taken for us to reach this level."
"So… your dream is to become streamers?"
"Exactly! Our dream is to become Tokyo's top streamers! We love this city so much we even gave up going to college elsewhere just to stay here."
Right, skipping college totally sounds like a noble sacrifice.
Haru glanced at the guy's red headband. "What kind of content are you streaming now?"
The man straightened up, a serious look on his face. "Exactly what you told me to do. I wear a red headband, go shirtless in just boxers, and dance to music with a devilish grin. I even learned how to do the Rasengan… from, uh, down there."
"Cough, cough—"
Amamiya nearly choked on air.
Could this guy not say so much in front of Yukino?
But before he could say anything, Yukino's shocked expression shifted to one of mild disdain as she cast him a pointed look.
The young man, oblivious, pulled out a thick envelope and held it out to Amamiya. "Boss, just call me Koji. This is half of what I've earned from streaming so far. Please, you have to take it."
Yukino blinked in surprise.
She had pieced together what had happened by now, but she hadn't expected these young men to offer to share their earnings.
It was… surprising.
Haru, however, gave a wry smile. "If I take your money, doesn't that make me your business partner?"
Koji froze, a hint of awkwardness creeping onto his face.
Haru's tone grew sharper. "You've come a long way, huh? I gave you a bit of advice, and now you're already planning for the future."
Yukino caught on quickly, turning to Koji with a question. "You're worried that this content won't last long, so you want him to keep giving you ideas?"
Koji's face turned redder. "Yeah, I mean… listening to smart people pays off, right? I figured if Boss could come up with one great idea, he'd definitely have more."
Yukino didn't respond, instead glancing at haru.
He's sharp, she thought. I didn't even consider that angle.
It made her realize just how much she still had to learn.
Haru, meanwhile, politely declined Koji's offer.
Helping them out had been a spur-of-the-moment thing, more of an experiment than anything else.
He didn't know these guys well enough to trust them, let alone enter into any kind of partnership—even if Koji was willing to share half his earnings.
When Haru and Yukino finally got home, Yukino's face lit up at the sound she'd been waiting for.
"Meow~"
Their orange cat waddled out of the living room, lazily making its way over.
It didn't hesitate upon seeing Yukino, immediately rubbing its head against her leg.
Clearly, it remembered the girl who always brought it treats.
This was the only time Yukino's smile truly reflected the warmth of a regular high school girl.
She picked up the cat gently, cradling it as she cooed, "I feel like Jelly's getting fatter. Is your automatic feeder broken?"
"I told you, orange cats are cursed to be fat," Haru teased, carrying the bag of cat snacks.
Yukino shot him an unimpressed look, choosing to ignore the ridiculous comment.
In the living room, she eagerly tore open the bag, feeding the cat little biscuits as it purred and nibbled in her lap.
As she glanced around, her eyes landed on a new poster on the shelf above the TV.
It hadn't been there during her last visit.
The poster featured a curvaceous woman in a sultry pose.
Yukino immediately recognized her.
Kyoko Fukada.
She remembered Haru mentioning the actress before.
When Haru came over with tea and snacks, Yukino took a cup, her tone calm. "Thanks. Is that poster new?"
"A classmate gave it to me. I thought Kyoko-san looked pretty, so I put it up," he replied honestly.
Yukino stroked the cat absentmindedly, her voice even. "I didn't know you were into older women."
Haru sipped his tea. "Well, she's a gorgeous actress with tons of fans."
"Hmm."
Yukino's expression didn't change, but the faint flicker in her eyes betrayed her thoughts.
