Chapter 25: The Duel to Prove The Worth
Two days later…
Zara was deep in work, her movements sharp and purposeful in the sprawling kitchen of the castle. The room buzzed with activity, yet all eyes were on her as she seamlessly managed the chaos. The caretakers hovered by the corners, their faces a mix of awe and concern as they watched their Luna slicing vegetables with practiced precision.
"My Luna, why are you doing all this? You should be at the training grounds right now," Lilly spoke up, her voice tinged with worry. Her eyes darted to Zara's hands, uneasy about the queen's involvement in such mundane tasks.
Zara glanced up, her lips curving into a calm smile. "My mates come first, Lilly. Training can wait. They need their strength before I need mine." Her voice carried a quiet authority that silenced further protests.
Lilly sighed, her concern still etched on her face as the tantalizing aroma of the bubbling pot caught her attention. "That smells incredible, Luna. What is it?"
Zara chuckled softly, her hands deftly chopping meat now. "It's my way of making soup—a full protein-packed porridge. This will help them heal faster."
Lilly inhaled deeply, clearly impressed. "You amaze me, my Luna. But you shouldn't be doing this alone—"
Before Lilly could finish, a piercing shout echoed through the kitchen, making everyone freeze.
"Ah—ouch!"
Zara hissed in pain, dropping the knife as blood trickled from her finger. Panic erupted among the caretakers.
"Oh goodness, Luna!" Lilly gasped, rushing to Zara's side. She grabbed a cloth and pressed it to the wound, her hands trembling. "The kings are going to kill me for letting this happen! Someone get bandages!"
"Lilly," Zara said, her tone steady despite the pain, "it's just a small cut. Calm down." But Lilly was too frantic to listen, muttering about impending doom.
"I told you not to work in the kitchen! If the kings find out…" Lilly's voice quivered as she wrapped the bandage around Zara's finger, her hands unsteady.
Zara rolled her eyes, her patience wearing thin. The rigid hierarchy of this world grated on her nerves. A fleeting thought crossed her mind. i need to rethink how I write stories with this kind of inequality.
Hoping to shift the focus, Zara said with a soft smile, "Lilly, instead of panicking, maybe we should check what caused the commotion. Someone might need our help."
Lilly hesitated, but Zara's calmness was contagious. She nodded, and together they moved toward the corridor, followed by the rest of the kitchen staff.
Unbeknownst to them, a shadowy figure lingered behind, carefully gathering the bloodstained cloth Zara had dropped before slipping away unnoticed.
As they reached the corridor, a chilling scene unfolded before them. Jennifer, the pack's notorious troublemaker, and her cronies were tormenting a trembling omega girl. The poor girl knelt on the cold floor, tears streaking her face as she scrubbed Jennifer's boots, her hands bruised and bleeding.
Rage ignited in Zara's chest. Without hesitation, she strode forward, her presence commanding the attention of everyone in the hallway. She knelt beside the omega and pulled her up, shielding her with a protective arm.
Jennifer's smug expression faltered as she saw Zara, though she quickly masked her surprise with disdain. "Well, if it isn't our Luna," she sneered.
Zara's voice was ice-cold, each word laced with controlled fury. "How dare you? What kind of creature torments someone weaker than themselves?"
Jennifer's lips curled into a mocking smile. "The kind that understands hierarchy, Luna. Weaklings like her deserve no better."
The gathered pack members gasped at Jennifer's audacity. Zara's fists clenched, but she maintained her composure.
"Hierarchy?" Zara's voice dropped to a deadly calm. "Is that what you call cowardice? Bullying someone who can't fight back?"
Jennifer's smirk widened. "You should understand, Luna. After all, weren't you once a weakling yourself? Rejected by your mate for being wolfless? You even tried to end your life, didn't you? What a pity you failed."
Laughter erupted from Jennifer's cronies, but the crowd around them fell silent. Zara stood motionless, her face an unreadable mask.
Jennifer, emboldened by the lack of reaction, took a step closer. "You're nothing, Zara. A powerless creature pretending to be a queen."
When Zara finally spoke, her voice was a low, lethal whisper. "Do you truly believe you're stronger than me?"
Jennifer snorted. "Stronger? I'm the strongest she-wolf in this kingdom. No one's ever beaten me, and no one ever will."
Zara tilted her head, her gaze piercing. "Then prove it. Tomorrow night, at the training grounds. A duel. You and me. Let's see who's truly stronger."
Jennifer was shocked by her invitation. She was looking at her with a widen eyes.
"Are you serious, Zara? You really think you can win over me? A she-wolf?" She asked with a immediate shock. As reply Zara just nodded her head.
A stunned silence fell over the corridor. Jennifer's confidence wavered for a moment before she recovered, her eyes gleaming with excitement.
"You're on. By this time tomorrow, everyone will see your place beneath me."
Zara stepped closer, her presence radiating quiet power. "We'll see who deserves their place. Best of luck, Jennifer."
With that, she turned and walked away, guiding the injured omega girl with her. The crowd parted to let her pass, their shock giving way to whispers that quickly spread through the castle.
And in the shadows, unseen by all, a pair of eyes gleamed with dark intent as they watched Zara disappear down the corridor.
---
Somewhere deep within the forest, shadows danced under the pale light of the moon. The air was thick with the earthy scent of moss and damp leaves, broken only by the faint rustle of a dark-cloaked figure crouching behind a jagged rock.
There another figure standing behind the rock. The figure's voice was low and raspy, barely audible above the sound of the wind.
"She's agreed to fight Jennifer tomorrow night at the training grounds. It's spreading like wildfire across the kingdom."
There was a crackle of static before another voice, colder and dripping with malice, responded from the other end. "Perfect. The fool has just signed her own death warrant."
The cloaked figure smirked, their teeth glinting faintly in the moonlight. "Should we intervene? Or let Jennifer tear her apart?"
"No." The second voice paused, as if savoring the thought. "Jennifer is nothing but a pawn. Let the fight proceed. But make sure it's Zara's last. I want her gone by sunrise."
"As you wish." The figure glanced over their shoulder, ensuring they were alone before continuing. "What's the plan?"
A chilling laugh echoed through the rock "Simple. Ensure the fight isn't fair. Poison her food, weaken her strength, and if she survives…" The voice grew darker, venom dripping from each word. "Finish her off in the chaos."
The cloaked figure nodded, determination hardening their features. "Consider it done. By this time tomorrow, the wolfless Luna will be nothing more than a memory."
"Good. Don't fail me." The conversation went dead, leaving the forest in silence.
The figure rose from their hiding spot, the hem of their cloak brushing the damp earth. They melted into the shadows, their silhouette disappearing among the trees as they whispered to themselves,
"Goodbye, Zara Blossom. Your story ends here."
Unbeknownst to them, a faint pair of glowing eyes watched from the treetops, disappearing as swiftly as they came, leaving only the whisper of leaves behind.
