Rewriting Her Destiny With The Lycan Kings

Chapter 26: The Voice Inside Her

Night had fallen over the castle, but Zara's room was anything but peaceful. She paced the length of it, her steps quick and uneven. Her mind was a whirlwind of panic and self-recrimination.

"Stupid, stupid, stupid!" Zara muttered under her breath, running a hand through her hair. Her other hand nervously twisted the bandage on her injured finger. "What in the world possessed me to challenge Jennifer? I must've lost my mind!"

She stopped abruptly, leaning against the edge of her desk. Her fingers clenched the wood so tightly that her knuckles turned white. "I'm not even a wolf. She's a trained fighter—a she-wolf! This isn't some underdog fairytale, Zara! She'll rip me apart!"

Across the room, Lilly stood silently by the door, her face etched with worry. She had been watching Zara's growing frustration for what felt like hours, unable to find the right moment to speak. Finally, she couldn't stay quiet any longer.

"My Luna…" Lilly's voice was soft, almost hesitant. "Why did you do it? Why challenge Jennifer like that? You know how dangerous she is. You don't have to prove anything to anyone."

Zara turned to face Lilly, her expression a mix of guilt and confusion. "Lilly, I wish I knew." She slumped into the chair by the fireplace, burying her face in her hands. "I don't even understand why I said what I did. When I saw that poor girl being treated like that… it was like something snapped inside me."

Lilly moved closer, her concern deepening. "Snapped? What do you mean, my Luna?"

Zara raised her head, her eyes distant as she tried to put her feelings into words. "It was like…I wasn't fully myself in that moment. I felt this overwhelming rage—like someone else was speaking through me. I didn't think. I just acted."

She paused, shaking her head. "But now the reality of it all is sinking in. Jennifer doesn't just want to fight me—she wants to kill me. And the worst part is…I gave her the perfect opportunity."

Lilly's heart ached seeing her Luna so vulnerable. "My Luna, you're not alone. We'll figure something out. Maybe you can—"

"Back out?" Zara interrupted, a bitter laugh escaping her lips. "I can't. You saw how everyone was watching. If I back down now, I'll lose whatever little respect I've managed to earn in this world. Jennifer will win without even lifting a finger."

Lilly hesitated, then knelt beside Zara, placing a comforting hand on her arm. "Then we'll prepare. We'll train you tonight. You might not be a wolf, but you're not powerless. You have a fire in you, Zara—a fire that even Jennifer fears. Why else would she try to humiliate you with those words?"

Zara looked at Lilly, the weight of her caretaker's words sinking in. "You really think I can stand a chance against her?"

Lilly nodded firmly. "I do. But you'll need to dig deep, my Luna. Not just to fight her—but to survive."

Zara let out a shaky breath, her mind still clouded with doubt, but Lilly's confidence was like a lifeline in the storm of her thoughts.

"All right," Zara said finally, her voice steadier than before. "Let's train. If tomorrow is going to be my last day, I'll make damn sure Jennifer remembers it."

Lilly gave a small, encouraging smile and stood, ready to assist her Luna. But as she turned to gather supplies, she whispered under her breath, "The kings will hear of this. One way or another, they'll protect you."

Zara didn't hear her, too lost in her thoughts. Outside, the moonlight cast eerie shadows across her room, and a strange, almost imperceptible chill crept in, as if unseen eyes were watching and waiting for the chaos to unfold.

Deep within the forest, the air was still, the only sounds being the rustle of leaves and the faint hum of nature. At the center of an ancient clearing sat the mentor of the Lycan Kings, cross-legged, his silver hair glowing faintly in the moonlight. His deep-set eyes were closed in intense meditation, his breathing steady as he sought the answers that had eluded him for days.

The energy in the kingdom had shifted dramatically, and the enigmatic presence of Zara weighed heavily on his mind. He had felt it—the ripple of power beneath her mortal exterior, a force unlike anything he had encountered before.

What was she? How had she ended up here, in a world she cannot survive? The need to uncover the truth gnawed at him relentlessly, pushing him deeper into his trance.

But then, a faint sound disrupted his focus.

A soft rustle, barely perceptible at first. Then another. It grew louder, the crack of twigs underfoot and the unmistakable shuffle of feet. His ears twitched, honing in on the source. Someone—or something—was moving through the forest.

The noise swelled, surrounding him from all sides. His brows furrowed, but he did not break his concentration. Instead, he reached out with his heightened senses, trying to discern the intruders' identities. The forest, however, betrayed no secrets.

Realizing the danger, he slowly opened his eyes.

And then, his heart nearly stopped.

Encircling him were figures cloaked in darkness, their forms barely discernible against the shadows of the trees. But it wasn't their presence that shocked him—it was their aura. An overwhelming force of malevolence pulsed from each of them, thickening the air with a suffocating weight.

"You," he whispered, his voice low and laced with disbelief. "It can't be…"
