Shadow of the forest

Chapter 27: The Shadow of the Main Tree

The three of them stood frozen before the towering, dying main tree. Its gnarled branches stretched into the darkened sky like skeletal fingers, its bark cracked and oozing black sap. The faint light that once radiated from the tree was now dim, barely clinging to existence.

Arina was the first to move, his boots crunching against the brittle ground as he approached the massive tree. Standing beneath its shadow, he felt impossibly small.

He reached out tentatively, his fingers brushing the bark. "...The main tree," he whispered, his voice trembling with a mix of awe and dread.

Zeke's gaze darted around the clearing, his good eye narrowing. "Something's wrong," he muttered. His hand instinctively went to the hilt of his weapon.

Suddenly, a deep rumble shook the ground, causing them to stumble. The air grew colder, the temperature dropping so fast that their breaths turned to visible puffs.

From behind the tree, a massive shadow began to emerge. Its hulking form towered over the landscape, each step sending tremors through the earth. Its eyes, glowing a malevolent red, locked onto them, radiating a hunger that made their blood run cold.

Arina's breath hitched. "It's… it's the shadow that devoured Kava."

But this time, the creature had grown to an unimaginable size, its grotesque form now a hundred times larger than before.

Zeke let out a guttural roar, his body convulsing as a fiery light engulfed him. When the light faded, his form had shifted. A massive lion stood where Zeke once was, its golden mane burning like the sun, its claws digging into the ground.

"Zeke!" Soran shouted, panic lacing her voice. "Calm down, you can't—"

But Zeke wasn't listening. With a deafening roar, he charged at the shadow, his massive paws leaving cracks in the ground as he leaped. His claws tore into the shadow's form, slashing through its smoky exterior.

Soran cursed under her breath. "Dammit, Zeke!" She raised her hands, her fingers glowing with blue light as she began casting her magic.

Arina, however, stood frozen in place. His legs felt like lead, his heart pounding in his chest.

"Arina! Snap out of it!" Soran screamed, her voice distant in his ears.

But then he heard it—a voice that sent chills down his spine.

"Arina… my baby..."

His head snapped around, his blood running cold. Standing amidst the dead trees was Kava, his familiar smile tugging at his lips. His form was exactly as Arina remembered—tall, poised, and exuding that same unsettling charisma.

"Reward…?" Kava whispered, his voice dripping with false kindness.

Arina's legs moved on their own, carrying him toward the figure. Kava extended a hand, his smile widening. "Come closer, my boy. Let me help you..."

Behind him, Soran's voice grew frantic. "Arina! Help us!"

Zeke roared as the massive shadow struck him with a sweeping blow, sending him crashing to the ground. He staggered to his feet, shaking his mane, his fiery eyes blazing with defiance.

Arina knew he needed to move, to help. But the pull of Kava's presence was too strong. Normally, he could resist the shadows' magic, but this was different—stronger, more personal. He took another step toward Kava, his mind screaming at him to stop.

"Arina!"

The voice snapped him out of his trance. He felt a force tugging at him, yanking him backward. Soran had used her magic to pull him away, her expression furious as she caught him.

"What the hell is wrong with you?!" she demanded, shaking him.

Arina blinked, his vision clearing. He looked around, realizing that Kava was gone. The figure had disappeared, leaving only the lingering dread in his chest.

"I…" He hesitated, his voice shaky. "It was nothing."

Soran glared at him, clearly unconvinced. But there was no time to argue.

The massive shadow roared, its red eyes narrowing as it prepared another attack. Arina clenched his fists, his arms lighting up with fiery runes as he summoned his magic.

He sprinted toward the shadow, his palms glowing with intense heat. "Take this!" he shouted, launching a massive ball of fire at the creature.

The flames struck the shadow's side, and for a brief moment, it seemed to work. A portion of the shadow burned away, leaving a gaping hole.

But then, as if mocking him, the hole closed up, the shadow returning to its original form.

Arina's heart sank. "No… no, that's impossible."

The shadow let out a deep, guttural laugh, its red eyes gleaming with malice. It was as if Arina's attack had been nothing more than a nuisance.

"Arina!" Soran shouted, her magic crackling in the air as she sent a barrage of ice shards toward the shadow. The shards embedded themselves in its form, but like Arina's attack, they seemed to do little more than slow it down.

Zeke roared again, leaping back into the fray. His claws raked across the shadow's face, but even his strength seemed insufficient against the sheer size and power of the creature.

Soran gritted her teeth, glancing between Zeke and Arina. "We're not strong enough for this," she muttered.

Arina's fists trembled as he prepared another attack. "We have to try," he said, his voice steady despite the fear in his eyes.

The battle was far from over, and the three of them knew it. The shadow was unlike anything they had faced before—a force of nature, a nightmare given form.

But they couldn't afford to back down. Not now.

----

The shadow loomed before them, its massive form casting a thick darkness that seemed to swallow the very light. Zeke, battered and exhausted from the relentless battle, was struggling to maintain his stance against the behemoth. His golden fur had dulled, and his massive claws were slowing, his energy sapped from the ongoing fight.

Arina's heart pounded in his chest as he watched Zeke falter. If they didn't do something soon, Zeke would be overwhelmed. The thought of losing his friend—the one person who had fought beside him through every hellish moment—they couldn't afford that.

Taking a deep breath, Arina gathered every ounce of his courage. He needed to distract the creature, to pull its attention away from Zeke long enough to give him a chance to recover.

"Zeke, hold on!" Arina shouted, his voice steady despite the panic gnawing at him.

He stepped forward, his arms flaring with fiery energy, and aimed his palms at the shadow's massive, glowing eye. With a shout, he unleashed a powerful blast of fire. The fire hit its mark, the explosion rocking the shadow's face, and for a moment, the creature recoiled, its red eyes burning brighter with fury.

That's when Arina knew he had its attention.

The massive shadow roared in anger, its form twisting unnaturally as it focused entirely on him.

"Arina, no!" Soran screamed from behind him.

But Arina had no time to explain. He darted to the side, trying to keep the shadow's attention on him while Zeke could recover. He sprinted, his body agile as the shadows followed, their tendrils snapping at his heels.

Behind him, Soran was rushing toward Zeke. But Zeke, barely able to stand, pushed her away with a growl.

"Don't interfere!" Zeke snarled, his voice filled with frustration and pain.

Soran stumbled back in shock. "Zeke! What are you—"

Before she could finish, Zeke's hand shot into his pocket, pulling out a small, delicate bottle. Soran's eyes widened in horror as she saw the contents of the bottle: a glowing, pale blue liquid.

"Tears of mermaids?!" she shouted in disbelief. "Zeke, don't drink that!"

But Zeke wasn't listening. His gaze, fierce and determined, locked with hers, filled with raw anger and an unshakable desire for vengeance.

"Don't interfere!" he growled again, and in one fluid motion, he threw his head back and drank the entire bottle.

Soran screamed as she watched Zeke's body convulse violently. His eyes glowed a bright, unnatural gold, and his body began to tremble as if some force was coursing through him—something beyond his control. His roar of pain split the air, but there was an undeniable smile on his face, as if he welcomed the agony.

In an instant, Zeke's form shifted once more. His body swelled, fur rippling as he turned into the massive lion again, but now he was even larger, an aura of golden magic enveloping him. He was no longer just a lion. He was the embodiment of a guardian, a force of nature imbued with unimaginable power.

Arina could only watch in awe as Zeke roared, his voice shaking the ground beneath their feet. The shadow, finally noticing the massive transformation, turned its gaze towards the lion with new, menacing focus.

The two titans collided in a storm of fury. Zeke's claws slashed through the air with lightning speed, each strike like a thunderclap, but the shadow countered with its own monstrous attacks. It lashed out with tendrils, sweeping Zeke off his feet and sending him crashing into the ground.

The ground trembled under the weight of their battle, the air thick with the stench of smoke and magic. Zeke leaped back to his feet, fury in his eyes as he charged again. His claws connected with the shadow's flesh, but this time, there was more force, more magic. The shadow screamed in pain, its form briefly shuddering as if something inside it was being wounded.

But just as quickly as the shadow screamed, it retaliated, its jaws snapping shut with a terrifying force, aiming for Zeke's neck. Zeke dodged, his massive body twisting in the air, and then, with a brutal roar, he lunged forward, sinking his teeth into the shadow's neck.

The sound of his teeth piercing the shadow's form was deafening, a sickening crunch echoing through the battlefield. The shadow screamed in agony, its body writhing and distorting as Zeke's powerful bite crushed its neck.

In that moment, Arina could see it—the thing that had been holding the shadow together. A dark, pulsating core, hidden deep within its form. It was its weak point, its vulnerability.

Before he could shout to Soran, a sudden shift in the air caught his attention. The ordinary shadows, once content to lurk in the background, began to stir. They swarmed the area, their numbers swelling into the thousands, and in an instant, both Arina and Soran were surrounded.

"No!" Arina shouted, gritting his teeth. "We have to protect Zeke!"

"We need to deal with these first!" Soran shouted back, her voice tight with strain.

Both of them fought valiantly, slashing through the smaller shadows, but the sheer numbers made it a losing battle. Arina's magic flared, his fiery blows cutting through the shadows, but they just kept coming. Soran summoned her ice magic, encasing whole swaths of shadows in blocks of frost, only for new ones to appear in their place.

Meanwhile, Zeke was locked in a vicious battle with the larger shadow. His lion form moved with a speed that belied its size, but the shadow wasn't slowing down. It lashed out with all its fury, but Zeke met every strike with a roar of defiance.

The two fought like gods clashing in the heavens, a battle of immense power, each blow shaking the earth beneath them. Zeke's golden aura flared brighter with every strike, but the shadow only grew more furious, more determined to overwhelm him.

Then, in a final, earth-shaking moment, Zeke's powerful jaws found their mark. He bit down on the neck of the larger shadow with a savage strength that made the ground tremble. The shadow screamed—an earsplitting, wailing cry that echoed through the entire battlefield.

Arina and Soran paused for a brief second, their gazes snapping to the battle. Zeke's head jerked back, his bloodied teeth tearing through the shadow's form. The shadow writhed in pain, its body beginning to disintegrate.

But just as quickly as the shadow screamed, an explosive burst of light filled the air. Arina and Soran were thrown back, their bodies flung through the air by the raw energy of the blast.

"Zeke!" Soran screamed, her voice full of panic as she stumbled to her feet. "No! Zeke!!!"

The blinding light vanished as suddenly as it had come, leaving a stillness in the air.

Arina's heart stopped as he saw Zeke's body lying motionless on the ground.

He rushed toward him, panic rising in his chest. "Zeke! Zeke!"

But as he reached Zeke's side, his heart froze in horror. Only the upper part of Zeke's body remained, his once-gleaming eyes now dull and lifeless, his spirit seemingly gone.

"No…" Arina whispered, his voice barely audible.

Soran stumbled to his side, groping around the ground in a desperate attempt to find her friend.

"Where is he?" she cried, her voice breaking. The bright light of the previous explosion blinded her eyes.

Arina felt the knot in his throat tighten as he shook his head, his breath catching in his chest. He couldn't speak, couldn't explain the devastation that filled him.

But before either of them could process their grief, a low growl echoed from behind them. The larger shadow had returned, though now it was smaller, deformed, and angry. Its body was shifting, contorting as if it were feeding on the smaller shadows that swarmed around it.

The battle wasn't over. It had only just begun.
