Chapter 28: The Awakening of Arina
The air around them was thick with tension, suffused with the smell of burning shadows and the crackling of magic. Arina stared at the grotesque form of the shadow before him, now smaller but even more dangerous. It devoured the smaller shadows with a ravenous hunger, seemingly feeding on them to restore its strength. The shadow's body was severely damaged, its once-immense form now distorted and weakened, yet still deadly.
Arina's heart pounded in his chest. He could feel the weight of his failure, the crushing pressure of every battle they'd fought, every friend they'd lost. His body ached from exhaustion, but there was no time to rest.
With gritted teeth, Arina gathered every shred of strength left in him. He clenched his fists, forcing his magic to rise. Flames erupted from his palms, searing fireballs hurtling toward the shadow with an intensity he'd never summoned before. Each fireball hit its mark, causing the shadow to scream in pain, its dark form writhing in the air.
But the shadow retaliated, its remaining power coiling like a serpent, and with a single sweep of its tendrils, it struck Arina, sending him crashing to the ground.
Pain shot through Arina's body as he lay there, his vision blurred. He could taste blood in his mouth, the world spinning around him. He struggled to breathe, his chest tightening as he tried to stand. But the questions gnawed at him. Why wasn't he strong enough? Why was everyone around him dying, while he remained helpless? His thoughts flashed to the days he had spent with Kava and Zeke—those peaceful moments in the hut, the warmth of their friendship.
"Arina…" Soran's voice broke through his thoughts, a soft whisper of concern.
Arina looked at her, barely able to focus. She was slumped on the ground, her form trembling as she struggled to stay conscious. But there was something in her eyes—a flicker of hope, a light that had not yet been extinguished.
"I… can still… help you…" she whispered weakly.
Arina reached for her, his heart aching. She could barely keep herself upright, yet she still wanted to help him. He wanted to scream, to cry out in frustration at how powerless he felt, but instead, he stayed silent.
Soran's hand trembled as she lifted it toward the sky, her magic rising from the very outskirts of the forest. Energy began to gather, swirling like a storm of green and gold, swirling into her palm. Her eyes blazed with intensity.
"The forest… chose you, Arina. You… are the one it has waited for. Save us," Soran said, her voice filled with an emotion that was both desperate and hopeful.
Suddenly, all the energy from the forest, from every corner of the land, surged into Arina's chest. His necklace, a symbol of his destiny, flared to life, glowing with a radiant, blinding light. The power coursed through his body, overwhelming him with its intensity.
Then, from within Soran, another wave of energy surged—green light spilling from her chest and flowing into Arina. Soran collapsed to the ground, her body spent from the magic she had given him.
Arina felt the force of it all, the whispers of all those who believed in him, who stood behind him. Voices rang in his ears, soothing and powerful.
"Arina…"
A white light enveloped his body, and Arina's brown hair shimmered and turned into a glowing white, a beacon of pure magic. His eyes burned with newfound power, the energy coursing through his veins. Wings of green energy unfurled from his back, glowing like the leaves of an ancient tree. From his palms, a sword of pure energy appeared, shimmering with raw magic, its blade gleaming with deadly light.
Tears streamed down Arina's face as he fell to his knees, overwhelmed by the power—and the sorrow that now consumed him. He knew who he was. He knew his past, his present, and the future that awaited him. The pieces of his existence fell into place, and for the first time, he truly understood.
The shadow that had once seemed insurmountable now trembled before him. It had underestimated the power of the forest, the power of those who believed in Arina. It attacked with fury, but Arina was no longer the helpless boy he had once been.
With a cry, he swung his energy sword, cutting through the shadow's arm with ease. The shadow let out a scream, but Arina didn't hesitate. He knew what had to be done. He would not let this creature continue its devastation.
The shadow retaliated, its body twisting in a final attempt to defeat him, but Arina was faster. With a graceful, powerful strike, he severed the creature's head, and its enormous form crumpled to the ground in a heap.
But Arina wasn't finished. He had seen something—something dark and twisted inside the shadow's form. His sword drove into the creature's chest, and with a sickening pull, he drew out the very heart of the darkness—a man with long blond hair and a pale face, whose eyes gleamed with death itself.
"Gerard..." Arina whispered, his voice filled with both disbelief and sorrow.
The man, Gerard, looked at Arina with a faint, broken smile. "Thank you..." he whispered, his voice fragile, as though he knew his end was near.
But Arina, the anger and betrayal still bubbling inside him, lifted his sword. He drove it through Gerard's chest with a cold finality.
"I don't need any thanks from you," Arina said, his voice icy. "You are nothing but a coward. You destroyed everything because the girl you loved didn't accept you."
Tears welled in Gerard's eyes as he looked at Arina, his breath slowing as his life drained away. "I… loved her… with all my heart… Emma…"
As the final words left Gerard's lips, his body went limp, his once-sparkling eyes dimming. Arina stood over him, the weight of his actions heavy on his shoulders. He didn't speak. He didn't need to. Gerard's final moments had been a testament to the hollow nature of his obsession—an obsession that had led to the destruction of everything Arina held dear.
Arina looked down at the body silently. His breath was steady, but the sadness in his heart was palpable. This was the end of one chapter, but there would be no victory dance. Not yet.
The battle was over.
