Chapter 154: Chapter 155: My Revered Vice-captain Yamada
In the end, Makoto successfully convinced Kisuke with a simple yet resolute statement: "As a healer, I will never give up on any patient."
After all, Makoto wasn't wrong.
Regardless of the circumstances, Kisuke's escape from the Central 46 had sealed his fate as a fugitive. Staying in the Soul Society would inevitably lead to relentless pursuit from all sides.
It was imperative to leave the Soul Society as quickly as possible.
Though the Central 46 might hesitate due to Yoruichi's influence, if Yamamoto were to personally intervene, enforcing the rules and order of the Soul Society, there would be no mercy.
In this context, restoring the consciousness of the Hollowfied Shinigami would significantly ease Kisuke's escape from the Seireitei.
Despite Makoto's visibly dire condition, his face showed nothing but unwavering focus and determination as he resumed his healing efforts.
Even Urahara Kisuke, along with Tsukabishi Tessai and Hachigen Ushoda, couldn't help but admire the sheer dedication and purity of Makoto's medical skills—and for that, they were deeply grateful.
Although Makoto's attitude towards Kisuke was less than friendly, his relentless efforts to treat the Hollowfied Shinigami indirectly facilitated their escape from the Soul Society.
"Makoto-kun, I will remember this debt of gratitude," Kisuke thought to himself, feeling a mix of gratitude and awe.
As Makoto treated Rose (Otoribashi Rojuro), skillfully embedding a "Seed of the Forest" during the process, he inadvertently looked up—only to see Kisuke assembling a strange, makeshift device.
The screen of the jury-rigged contraption displayed an analysis of Muguruma's Hollowfied areas. Controlled by six mechanical arms resembling tentacles, the device began the delicate task of excising the Hollowfied portions of Muguruma's spiritual body.
The surreal and unsettling scene left Makoto feeling uneasy. Nearby, Yoruichi, Tessai, and Hachigen were all visibly sweating, nervously swallowing as they watched.
What made the situation even more jarring was the fact that the device occasionally sputtered, emitted smoke, and malfunctioned. Muguruma's unconscious groans and cries of pain added to the disturbing atmosphere.
Occasionally, the device's clumsiness caused it to tear off parts of Muguruma's spiritual body in gruesome, bloody chunks.
Unfazed, Kisuke quickly demonstrated his exceptional healing skills, stemming the bleeding and continuing the procedure with meticulous efficiency.
Throughout the process, Kisuke jotted notes in a small notebook, occasionally showing expressions of sudden realization.
"This... feels like an execution," Makoto thought, his exhaustion momentarily forgotten as he felt a pang of sympathy for Muguruma.
In that moment, Makoto began to understand why, in the original version, many Shinigami were so resistant to being treated by Kurotsuchi Mayuri. If Kisuke's approach was already this terrifying, Mayuri's utter disregard for ethics and patient well-being could only be described as sheer torment.
To these "scientists," anyone lying on their operating table seemed to have been reduced to mere experimental material.
Lost in thought, Makoto snapped back to reality just in time to see Muguruma, drenched in blood, still on the operating table. Kisuke, unfazed, pulled out a syringe and injected it into Muguruma's backside, then calmly continued excising the Hollowfied portions.
"This... is inhumane, unethical, and outright wrong," Makoto thought, his heart heavy with guilt.
"Captain Muguruma, just hold on a little longer. Once I've finished treating the others, I'll come and rescue you!"
Steeling his resolve, Makoto forced himself to focus and began treating Shinji Hirako and Vice-captain Yamada Seinosuke.
When it came to Vice-captain Yamada, whom Makoto deeply respected, he spared no effort. The thought of Seinosuke being forced to wander the Human World filled Makoto with sorrow.
If not for his intervention altering the timeline, Seinosuke would have remained the Fourth Division's Vice-captain and later taken up the prestigious role of head physician at the division.
Driven by this regret, Makoto dedicated himself wholly to Yamada's treatment.
However, his mental and physical exhaustion reached their limit. His vision blurred, and his hands grew unsteady.
In an unintentional mishap, Makoto's scalpel cut slightly deeper than intended, removing unnecessary tissue. Realizing his deteriorating condition, he stopped using healing techniques on Yamada, fearing further mistakes. Instead, he focused on suturing the wounds.
Given Yamada's own exceptional medical skills, Makoto trusted that he could treat himself upon waking.
But as Makoto's vision briefly cleared, he was horrified to find that he had accidentally sutured Yamada's mouth shut.
"Vice-captain Yamada... I'm so sorry..."
Finally succumbing to exhaustion, Makoto fainted, unable to complete Yamada's treatment.
"But it's okay, Vice-captain Yamada. The seed of our connection has already been planted..."
"Kisuke knows how to proceed. It'll just... hurt a bit more. Please endure it."
---
When Makoto regained consciousness, he found himself in a makeshift Fourth Division tent.
The flap opened, and Aoki Risa entered, her voice filled with relief.
"Makoto-kun... no, Vice-Captain Senju, you're finally awake!"
"Risa? How did I end up here?" Makoto asked, massaging his aching temples.
"The Omnitsukido brought you back. You've been asleep for an entire day and night," Risa explained, pulling a letter from her sleeve.
"Oh, and this letter was delivered with you," she added, handing it over.
Makoto, still piecing together the events before his collapse, opened the letter and began to read:
"Makoto-kun, we've left. Perhaps we'll meet again one day. In the meantime, please take good care of Yushiro for me. After all, you wouldn't want me to inform Captain Unohana about your... misdeeds involving myself and the female Vice-captains, would you?"
