Chapter 153: Chapter 154: The Paragon of Reverence for One’s Master
Instinctively, Urahara Kisuke, Muguruma Kensei, and Ushoda Hachigen all cast their gazes toward Shihoin Yoruichi. Their looks seemed to collectively question her:
"Did you rush us out of Central 46 just to show us… this?"
Even Yoruichi, known for her wild and unrestrained nature, found herself experiencing a metaphorical heart attack at the sight before her.
This scene—so audacious and outrageous—managed to leave even a free-spirited wildcat like her at a loss for words.
In the next moment, Yoruichi appeared beside Makoto and, with a tone full of exasperation, interrogated him:
"Makoto-kun, what exactly are you doing? I risked everything to bring them here, and you… you're up to this?"
"I…"
Makoto rubbed his temples, still feeling dizzy, as he stared at the blurry image of Yoruichi before him. Completely oblivious to his predicament, he responded:
"
Lady Yoruichi, why are you back so soon?"
With her arms crossed and an incredulous look, Yoruichi scrutinized Makoto, who appeared utterly drained, before retorting, "What did you expect? That I'd give you… more time?"
Makoto instinctively shook his head. "More time? One minute wouldn't have been enough, let alone more."
"...?"
Yoruichi's expression froze.
"Then how much time do you need to finish?" she asked, her tone growing increasingly peculiar.
Makoto pinched the bridge of his nose, attempting to steady his weary mind, and replied, "Conservatively? At least an hour per person."
"...!"
Yoruichi's eyes widened, and a mix of shock and disbelief flickered across her face. She couldn't resist asking:
"An hour per person? And that's conservative? You're… this strong?"
"Of course. It's impossible to go any faster, especially in my current state..." Makoto replied, gesturing toward the neatly arranged unconscious bodies of Lisa Yadomaru and the others.
"I just finished treating Vice-captain Yadomaru and the others, which drained a significant amount of my energy. That's why it's taking so long…" He paused before adding, "I just didn't expect Lady Yoruichi to return so quickly. If I'm to complete the treatment for all the hollowified Shinigami, I'll need a bit more time."
"Wait… treatment?" Yoruichi asked, her tone tinged with hesitation.
"What else would it be?" Makoto adjusted his glasses slightly and looked at her quizzically.
A faint blush crept across Yoruichi's face, and she coughed lightly, her voice carrying a hint of embarrassment. "Ah, yes. Treatment. Of course."
"...Is that so?"
Makoto tilted his head, sensing something was amiss, but before he could rise from his crouched position, his hand landed on something—something that didn't feel quite right.
Realizing what it was, Makoto instantly leapt off Muguruma Kensei's chest, his face a mix of shock and mortification.
Before Makoto could address the situation, Kisuke, standing behind Yoruichi, asked in astonishment:
"Makoto-kun, are you saying you've completely healed Vice-captain Yadomaru and the others of their hollowification?"
Makoto, trying hard not to dwell on his earlier mishap, turned his focus back to Kisuke. He answered with a hint of frustration:
"Not completely healed. Hollowification is a transformation rooted in the soul. What I've done is address the damage to their spiritual bodies."
He continued, "After studying the hollowification process, I discovered that the spiritual body's erosion by hollowification can be halted under certain conditions. It's because of this that I've been able to treat the hollowified Shinigami."
Kisuke's eyes sparkled with interest. "Can you elaborate on the specifics? This is incredibly important to me."
Makoto's brow furrowed slightly, his lingering distrust of Kisuke evident. However, after glancing at Yoruichi, he suppressed his irritation and nodded.
This subtle shift in expression didn't escape Yoruichi, who felt a surge of gratitude, guilt, and trust towards Makoto.
After all, Kisuke was merely her close friend, but in Makoto's eyes, he was practically an enemy. Despite this, Makoto chose to endure for Yoruichi's sake, refraining from any confrontation.
In that moment, Yoruichi couldn't help but feel that the care and trust Makoto had shown her far exceeded anything she had ever done for him.
'Captain Unohana really has a keen eye,' Yoruichi thought with a tinge of envy. 'To have such a devoted disciple… Makoto-kun truly is the Soul Society's paragon of reverence for one's master!'
As Makoto finished fulfilling his responsibilities, he massaged his temples and continued to explain:
"The reason these hollowified Shinigami haven't regained consciousness is due to the extreme contamination caused by their uncontrolled hollowification. It's akin to a finely tuned machine being inundated with impurities, disrupting its function."
He added, "This was something I confirmed through my treatment of Lady Yoruichi. If my calculations are correct, Vice-captain Yadomaru and the others should regain consciousness soon."
Yoruichi chimed in, "That's right. I can vouch for Makoto-kun's abilities. My recovery was entirely thanks to him…"
However, her gaze suddenly shifted to the four unconscious, shirtless male Shinigami, and her voice faltered as realization struck her.
Kisuke, oblivious to the awkwardness, exclaimed excitedly, "I see! I always assumed my treatments failed. But now I understand—it was the lingering hollowification residue in their spiritual bodies causing the problem…"
His enthusiasm unabated, Kisuke turned to Makoto, noticing his near-exhausted state. "Makoto-kun, you've worked hard. I'll take it from here. I'll design a device to extract the hollow spiritual pressure from their bodies."
"...?"
Makoto froze.
But how could he let Kisuke steal his fruits of labor? Exhausted though he was, this was his work, his pride.
"I appreciate the thought, Captain Kisuke, but only someone proficient in medical arts can discern which parts of the hollowification process are harmful to the spiritual structure," Makoto countered.
"Don't underestimate me," Kisuke replied with a grin. "I was the top of my class in Kaido during my time at the Shin'o Academy."
Makoto sighed and offered a compromise. "In that case, how about this—Captain Kisuke handles Captain Muguruma's treatment, while I continue with the others?"
