Survive as a Prison Guard in the Game

Chapter 118 - Shadow Lord (4)

Chapter 118
Shadow Lord (4)

Through the bustling streets, he found a tavern closer to the sea.

The most popular place for disembarking travelers.

The tavern is a large building filled with many patrons.

[Treasures of the Sea].

Through the open door, he saw a group of people drinking and chattering. Redin went inside and sat down at an empty table.

The waitress approached him.

“What would you like to order?”

“One of your best snacks and a beer.”

He added a tip and surveyed the crowd.

“Drink, drink! Let’s eat and drink to our hearts’ content today.”

“And you’re going to be the first to do it? I can already picture you feeding those fishes at sea.”

“What? Kahahahaha.”

Free City of Emer.

Formerly owned by the Brassel, one of the seven major criminal organizations, it became a free city after the capture of its leader, Henry Baskervan.

A city that is ruled by no authority.

The people who lived in Emer didn’t want to be ruled by anyone, and so they worked together to run the city.

However,

But it wasn’t all peaceful.

“But, doesn’t it seem like there’s been a lot of pirates lately?”

“Ah. You said this was your first time sailing, didn’t you?”

“Yes.”

“Well, this is the time of year when the most expensive fish are caught. That’s why they’re out there baring their teeth and robbing fishing boats.”

Pirates plundering.

“So there’s nothing we can do about it?”

“Nothing, except to die.”

“The navy is….”

“They’re poorly armed. Phew, back in the days of Brassel, we didn’t have to worry about these things.”

As he listened to their conversation, he was collecting information.

If the pirates were actively operating in the area, there was a good chance that the ones he was hunting for were as well.

Because they were pirates, as well.

“Here’s your beer and food.”

Steaming seafood wafting with smoke.

A stout beer with a thick foamy head.

He saw the people next table looking at the food on his table.

“Is that okay?”

“Sure.”

He moved his chair towards the people talking next to him, and called for the waiter. He then ordered two more plates of appetizers and beers.

“No. I don’t know if we should be taking advantage of you.”

“Well, I’m new here, and there’s a lot of questions I would like to ask you guys, so I guess you could say that’s the price for this.”

“Really? Okay, you can ask me anything.”

The conversation developed over the course of a few drinks.

These guys were fishermen who roamed around in medium-sized boats.

“I didn’t mean to listen earlier, but are there really that many pirates here?”

“It’s bullshit.”

One of the fishermen shook his head in exasperation.

“Back in the old days, these bastards couldn’t even make a peep because of Brassel, but now, they’re all sailing around like it’s their damn playground.”

“So are they all part of the same crew?”

“They’re all different pirates. I’ve seen at least five.”

The fisherman straightened his back and squared his shoulders as if he were proud. As he proceeded to describe the pirates he’d seen.

None of them were the ones he was after.

Perhaps they hadn’t been formed yet.

It was entirely reasonable, as this was a long time in the past from the game’s point of view.

“Are there any pirates out there that use three skulls?”

“Three skulls? Hmm.”

The fisherman shook his head.

“There are no such pirates around here.”

“Then who is the strongest of all the pirates?”

“The Blackfords. Their ships are a scam. They can go as far as the Shadow Islands. No navy can chase them.”

The corners of his mouth curled up.

The ship the Blackfords possessed was the vessel he was looking for.

“Where do pirates called the Blackfords tend to hang out?”

“Where there’s the most fish. Even with Emer’s Navy stationed there, they hang around quite openly.”

“What do I have to do to get there?”

“There’s probably no one who wants to travel there. Small fishermen like us are too scared to go there. You’d have to find fishing boats that operate from a large business.”

The idea of using a big boat is a bit bothersome.

After thinking for a while, he looked over at the fisherman, who called himself the captain.

The man who has been chatting so far.

“Can I ask you a favor?”

“What is it?”

“If you take me to where the Blackfords are, I’ll give you…..”

From his subspace pouch, he pulled out a sack of money. He thrust it at the captain.

“I’ll give you all of this.”

“Gulp.”

The captain’s red eyes widened. He sucked in his breath, then cleared his throat and looked at him.

“That’s a lot of…… money, but it’s not enough to…….”

Pulling another sack of money out of the subspace pouch. Raising the two sacks, he shook them towards the captain.

“Is this enough?”

“Huek!”

The captain’s eyes bulged in surprise and he nodded.

“Where shall I take you, sir?”

“Sir, we are nearing our destination.”

At the Captain’s voice, he stepped out onto the deck.

Across the blue sea, he could see several ships. A large trawler was hauling in its net.

It was full of fish.

“Wow… how much is all that?”

The fisherman next to him was looking at the boats with envy.

The reason why the large fishing boats were able to fish freely was because of the combat ships around them.

Warships to safeguard the fishing boats.

It was keeping the local pirates from approaching.

*Pooh-pooh!* *Pooh-pooh!*

With the booming sound of a ship, a large vessel drew near. The dolphin emblem of the Emer’s Naval Forces. A uniformed man addressed them via a loudspeaker.

“We can’t guarantee your safety if you go any further, turn your ship around immediately and move to a safe area.”

The Captain swiveled his head to look at him.

As if asking him what to do, Redin raised the corner of his mouth and smiled. The Captain’s eyes squeezed shut and he continued sailing the ship.

“Stop.”

“….”

“This is our final warning. Stop, we can’t be held responsible if you go any further.”

“Damn it, this is all for the money.”

The Captain increased the ship’s speed.

The rapidly accelerating ship was getting farther and farther away from the navy, and the sounds from the loudspeaker were barely audible.

Some distance away from the large trawler boats.

The ship Redin was on was getting closer to the Shadow Archipelago, separating them from the city.

The Captain halted the boat and walked over to him.

“We ought to be seeing the pirate ship around here by now.”

“Do you have any nets?”

“It’s a fishing boat, of course we have one.”

“Then go ahead and catch some of the fish. We’ll have to throw out some bait to lure them in.”

“If a pirate ship appears, this boat will just be fish food.”

Redin took another sack of silver coins from his subspace pouch and handed it to the captain.

“Is this enough?”

“Cough.., if we see a pirate ship, we’ll run for it.”

“Sure.”

Watching the captain call his crew of fishermen to move the nets, he settled into a corner and waited for time to pass.

The fishermen unfurled their nets.

He watches them reel in the fish.

He couldn’t help but wonder how much time had passed.

“Look, there’s a pirate ship!”

One of the fishermen shouted in alarm.

With that, the captain barked orders.

“Damn it, I knew it, I’ve been so blinded by money for nothing…… Give up the nets! Cut them all up.”

Walking past the bustling fishermen, he made his way to the head of the boat.

A black pirate ship, sailing fast in the distance.

A flag with a skull on it fluttered, and he could hear the pirates on board shouting as they raised their weapons.

“Are those the Blackford Pirates?”

“Yes. By the look of their attire, I’m guessing it’s the commander of the unit…… Ha, Captain, what are we going to do?”

As he watched the black ship draw in closer, he recognized the same illustration he’d seen in the game and caused him to grin.

It was a special ship built by Baskervan.

“See you guys later.”

Waving goodbye to the fishermen, he created a shadow alter ego on the pirate ship’s deck.

[Shadow Shift].

He traveled to where his alter ego stood.

“Nice to meet you guys.”

As he waved to the pirates, who were staring at him in disbelief, they lunged at him with wide grins.

Grabbing the arm of the first pirate to reach him, he twisted it.

“Argh!”

*Snap!*

He snapped the arm completely off and flung him in the direction of the pirates.

*Swish!*

Dodging attacks coming from behind, he picked off the pirates one by one.

“Since I need someone to operate the ship….”

“Aaaahhhh!”

“I’ll only spare five people.”

“Get out of the way!”

The man who seemed to be the commander shoved the pirates aside and stepped forward. He looked at Redin, grinding his teeth, and scowling.

“What are you doing, bastard?”

“I’m trying to borrow this ship.”

“What?”

He sheathed his sword and threw a light punch at the commander walking towards him.

[Black Bear’s Paw].

*Booom!*

A shockwave exploded, sending the commander hurtling away. The remaining pirates gulped at the sight and turned to look at him.

“If you know how to operate this ship. Raise your hand. The first five of you will be spared.”

“I-I know how to sail!”

“Me too!”

“I know how to do it too!”

Smiling at them.

“Let’s go to the Shadow Archipelago.”

*Crack!* *Rumble!*

*Splash!* *Booom!* *Splash!*

A cascade of thunder rumbles down from the gloomy dark skies, and with it comes rough seas that rock the ship.

An environment that would have been impossible for a normal ship to withstand.

The special Black Ship, which was made by the Baskervans, sailed swiftly through it all.

“There’s the Shadow Islands.”

One of the pirates gestured ahead.

There was an archipelago consisting of several islands. Redin could see several black ships, including the one he was currently aboard, and figures that looked like pirates.

At the far end of the archipelago.

There stood the largest building by far. A mansion that had been home to the Baskervans for generations. Behind it lay the Sea God.

“Man the ship.”

“Aye.”

There was a hint of mirth in the pirate’s voice, but he didn’t pay it much attention.

*Clunk!*

The black ship has stopped at an island.

The pirates dropped anchor and lowered a ladder to the shore.

And then, the pirates who had been lying in wait on the island rushed in.

A snickering sound from behind him.

“Tsk.”

Using his [Shadow Alter Ego], he killed all of the pirates on the ship, then made his way down the ladder, clearing out the rest of the pirates as he went.

“Keukk!”

“Arrghhh!”

With a slow pace, he made his way to Baskervan’s mansion.

*BOOM!*

Hearing the cacophony of screams, the pirates burst out of the mansion. Surrounding him, and finally, the last to appear, the leader of the pirates.

With a long beard and fierce eyes.

A burly man with a scar across his chest.

The entire presence felt ominous.

This man was far more dangerous than the squad commander from before.

“Dabbling with the shadows… The lineage of House Baskervan should have ended with a wench. Who are you, boy?”

“Are you familiar with them?”

Redin questioned while staring at the Blackford Captain.

“Quite well.”

The captain made a lopsided grin.

“I captured Henry myself and handed him over.”

The men surrounding him pulled out something. A blinding flash of light. In that instant, the power of the shadows in his body was sealed.

He felt hollowed out and empty.

Unable to use the [Shadow Arts].

“…Ah.”

“Shadow power isn’t all-powerful, kid. I don’t know how you ended up here, but thanks to you, I’ve made a fortune.”

Turning away, the captain barked instructions to one of his underlings.

“Call Rodwell, tell him we’ve got a guy using the power of shadows.”

‘Rodwell?’
