Survive as a Prison Guard in the Game

Chapter 119 - Shadow Lord (5)

Chapter 119
Shadow Lord (5)

A possible involvement with Rodwell.

Which means it was Rodwell’s plan to capture Baskervan and ship him off to Burning Hell.

“Heheheh.”

The Pirate Captain grinned widely, the corners of his mouth twitching upward, causing Redin to speculate on what kind of information might be in his head.

Balling up his fists, he charged forward.

Using the white tiger stride, he closed in on the captain, fists outstretched. However, the captain raised his sword to block the blow.

*BAAAAM!!*

A burst of shockwave ripped through the air.

He didn’t stop there, continuing to throw out punches. One after another, each one packed with mana, they exploded, leaving the captain flustered.

*Boom!*

*Boom!*

“Grrr!”

“It seems like you’ve held up pretty well?”

Since he’d never experienced a proper fight after acquiring Shapeshifting, it was the perfect time to experiment with different techniques.

The techniques that were written in the Inscription.

Using it to predict the captain’s movements, he was able to see and dodge incoming attacks and throw out his punches.

Mixing in an occasional feint.

The man was caught off guard and took a hit.

*Wham!*

The captain was sent sailing through the air by the punch, and took the opportunity to dispose of the group that had been using artifacts around him.

With the return of his ability to control the shadows, he finished off all the pirates in sight.

*Tap!*

*Tap!*

Walking over to where the captain was lying. Picking up his sword from the ground.

He plunged it into the man’s thigh.

The man attempted to shield himself by drawing on his mana, but it was of no use to him. Forming an Aura Blade, that cut through his mana.

*Stab!*

“Arrghh!”

“How do you know Rodwell?”

“….You think I’ll tell you?”

“You’d do well to tell me.”

Redin twisted the sword in the man’s thigh.

“AARRGGHHH!!”

“Do you feel like talking now?”

“The bastard found me first!”

“And?”

“He told me that if I worked to help him bring down Henry Baskervan, he’d give the organization to me, so I did as I was told.”

“Tell me more about the details.”

“That’s something…. can’t tell you.”

Redin pressed the sword down on his thigh, and the man gave a venomous snarl.

“I swear I can’t tell you! If I say anything about it, I’ll die!”

“It looks like you’ve made some kind of blood pact.”

Redin withdrew the sword from the captain’s thigh and aimed it at the man’s heart.

“P-Please…. No!”

*Squelch!*

As he pierced the heart, the [Mask of the Dead] was activated, showing him the man’s past.

Memories of living an idle life within the mansion.

There wasn’t much to be gained here, so he waited to speak to the soul. The Captain’s eyes began to glaze over.

The beginning of a conversation.

Since he knew he couldn’t converse indefinitely, he quickly asked only the most important questions.

“Do you have any idea why Rodwell sent Henry Baskervan to Burning Hell?”

“I don’t know.”

“Then what specific instructions did he give you after Henry was taken?”

“He told me to find Henry’s lineage and bring them back, but I was unable to locate them since he’d already hidden them away.”

“Have they reached out to you since?”

“Yes.”

‘Really?’

“What did he need from you?”

“He told me to send some of the talented guys I had with me…… over to…….”

Like a crackle of static.

His voice was cut off.

Soon, the memory ended and the surroundings returned to normal.

“Huu…”

He was thinking that the unit commander wasn’t particularly good, but that was because all the best fighters were with Rodwell.

If that was the case, why did Rodwell ask for them to be sent over?

Redin furrowed his brow and mulled it over.

He tried communicating to the other dead pirates, but none of them had anything more information than the captain.

“First…….”

It was clear that the men didn’t call the Oberg Empire home.

The reason why he needed skilled hands.

It seems as though he has plans beyond the Orberg Empire.

“I guess I’ll just have to ask him personally.”

He turned his gaze toward Baskervan Mansion. A secret place beyond that mansion, where the God of Sea was.

“Time to go.”

“Then let’s do it this way.”

Rodwell ended the meeting and strode out of the room.

Fabian followed suit, standing up and looking at the three remaining Dukes.

A peculiar sense of detachment.

“Since it’s lunch, why don’t we eat together?”

“Fellow dukes should stick together.”

“Well. Do you think I’d want to eat if my whole house was on fire?”

The fact that the three of them had joined forces was evident. And they made no attempt to hide it.

Fabian twisted his mouth into a grin.

“See you later.”

With that, he slipped out of the room and boarded the waiting carriage.

*Clip-Clop!*

*Clip-Clop!*

The horse drawn carriage headed for the newly constructed Ducal Residence.

Fabian recalled his most recent report.

-As expected, the other side intercepted us. We’ll move as planned.

.

.

.

-We have secured the first identification badge.

-We’ll move on to the next plan to secure the second ID badge.

After that, there’s a break in communication.

-Pierre, Hekan, and Untouchable seem to have joined up with each other.

-We’ve been unsuccessful in securing the second ID.

This morning he received a report that the plan had failed.

Pierre and Hekan.

Including the Untouchables.

“These bastards.”

Well, except for the Untouchables.

Pierre and Hekan gave no indication of feigning it.

The Imperial Knights’ trials are supposed to be a competition.

They openly pooled their strength without targeting each other, focusing solely on Blood.

“After setting fire to us, you expect me to sit and eat?”

Anger bubbled up inside him.

As much as he would have liked to physically move to compete for the badge, there were many things he needed to do in his position as Duke.

“Huu…”

Fabian remembered the expressions on the faces of the Dukes and formed bats out of his blood.

He placed a message on it.

-Change to Plan C.

He sent the bats to the vampires who were competing for identification badges. The bats flew quickly out the carriage window.

A plan devised by Reddin and him.

They had worked out a detailed strategy, anticipating all kinds of variables. One of which was the present situation.

All three Dukes, working with each other.

And Blood having to fight on its own.

“Let’s see who gets the last laugh.”

A Rock in the middle of a Black Tempest.

When he first met the God of the Seas, the creature told him he would wait for him there.

Afterwards.

Seria said it was located in the deepest reaches of the Shadow Archipelago, and could only be reached by mastering the Power of Shadows to its limits.

“That’s it then.”

As he walked along the path Seria had outlined, he came to what appeared to be a secret entrance.

A door in the depths of Baskervan Mansion.

Chains made of shadows wrapped around the door, and it was emblazoned with a black dragon depicting the form of the sea god.

The sight alone gave it a sense of grandeur.

“…..”

Reaching out with his hand, he harnessed the power of shadows. It disperses the heavy chains of shadows wrapped around the door and unlocking it.

*Clank!*

Through the door lies the black sea. There was a stone bridge across the water, and there was a large rock at the end of it.

*Crash!* *Boom!* *Crash!*

*Rumble!*

Black lightning crashed down like crazy, and a violent tempest formed by strong winds swirled around the rock.

*Whirr!*

If it were an ordinary person.

The force of the wind was such that one could have been swept straight into the sea.

The clothes he was wearing were flapping around like they might tear.

He tried using his Shadow alter ego, just in case, but it failed to materialize on the bridge or on the rock.

“Huu…”

Exhaling, he began to step forward to the bridge.

As soon as his foot made contact with the bridge, a bolt of lightning fell from the black sky.

*Zap!*

*Boom!*

Redin formed a shield out of shadow and blocked the lightning. But it didn’t end there. With every step, more lightning rained down.

If not for the shadow shield…

“Is this why she insisted on mastering it to the extreme?”

When he was halfway to the bridge.

*Whoosh!*

The storm whipped up and tried to blow him away, and if he hadn’t used the shadows to tether himself to the bridge, he would have been sucked in.

The tempest intensified.

It was impossible to continue walking.

“Shadow…..”

Thinking of a solution to this situation, he constructed a giant wall using the shadows.

A wall that would shield him against the lightning and block the wind.

After covering his legs, and the entire bridge, to the left, right, and the ceiling with shadows, he sprinted forward and finally arrived at the rock.

“Huu….”

Although crossing the bridge wasn’t as easy as he thought it would be because of the forced elevation caused by the [Phalaenopsis Dream (S)].

Nevertheless, he managed to get there.

There was a black bell on the rock, which he picked up and rattled.

*Jingle!*

*Jingle!*

In that instant.

The lightning around him ceased, the tempest subsided, and the roaring sea settled.

-You’re here.

A familiar voice called out to him.

The voice of the God of the Sea, who’d imparted the power of the shadows to Seria and tried to kill him.

-As expected, a member of that family.

*RUMBLEEEE!!*

The black sea behind the rocks parted revealing the God of the Sea.

A pair of massive horns.

Glistening black scales.

With a long, billowing beard, the black dragon flew through the air and leaned down to face him.

-It’s certainly nice to finally speak to you face to face.

“Alright, so tell me more about this family.”

-This Family? Don’t you know what kind of blood runs through your veins?

The God of the Sea made a small smile and opened his mouth.

-All Master Berhart. His blood runs through you.

He had heard of it only once.

An extraordinary family known for their genius at all kinds of things.

The Gifted Berharts.

In the game, they were listed as a defunct family, and nothing was known about their history.

“Isn’t House Berhart considered defunct?”

-Defunct? That’s the first time I’ve heard of it.

“Then what did you mean back then when you said you couldn’t believe that his lineage is still here?”

-Berhart was a hero in the first war against the demons. A master with a sword, a master with his magic. He excelled in all things, and even received the favor of the gods, so it’s no wonder he was called a demigod.

The Sea God spoke in a harsh tone.

-And I lost to him. That’s all I know. After that, the war ended, and he disappeared.

In the distant past.

A hero who has not been written about.

There’s no mention of the first Berhart recorded anywhere in the game.

Even the Berhats that he knew.

All he knows about them is that they rose to prominence during the Second War against the Demon Church, after which every member of the family died.

“How could a family with such tremendous power fall?”

-People with exceptional power tend to be attractive targets for others.

“Hmmm…….”

The Berhart described by the God of the Sea was talented in every aspect, but the Berhart he knew only excelled in one.

A degradation of ability.

It made sense that those members of the current generation would die at the hands of those who were jealous of their power, especially if they were not gifted with the ability to use it.

His lips slightly twitched upward.

So much fun learning things he had no knowledge of.

Though the question now was, who had attacked the Family, and how had this body, with the blood of Berhart, managed to survive?

And there was only one person to ask.

There was only one person who knew the identity of Redin.

The Warden of Burning Hell, Rukel.

“Great.”

With that, he pushed his ever-growing list of concerns to the back of his mind and looked up at the God of the Sea. The purpose of coming here remains unchanged.

To break the Shadow Lord’s seal.

“Enough of the past. Let’s get back to the real matter at hand.”
