Survive as a Prison Guard in the Game

Chapter 98 - Brown Bear Hunting (2)

Chapter 98
Brown Bear Hunting (2)

Before leaving for a mission.

Stopping by Heather’s workshop in the special education wing. The room is littered with inventions that Heather is working on.

Huddled in a corner, Heather is working on one of his inventions.

*OOoooh!*

Judging by the mana pulsing through the room, it looks like he’s working on something that requires Magic. He leaned back against the wall, waiting for him to finish.

Just a few months ago.

Heather was once filled with hate towards magic, but now willingly used it to create artifacts.

Artifacts that would help them in their mission.

From earrings that functioned as communicators, allowing for instant communication with members of the team, to a sticky goo that could discern certain types of energy, allowing him to identify the spy.

A truly monstrous talent.

“Hmm?”

Swiveling to the side, he saw that Heather had finished his research and was coming over.

“When did you get back?”

“Just now.”

“Contact me when you are coming. Aren’t you busy with your mission?”

“I have some time to spare.”

“Really?”

Heather smiled broadly.

It was nice to see him looking so much more confident than he’d seen him before.

“How’s Special Ed going these days?”

“We just got our first batch of new students, and they’re in training. They’ll be ready for Cerberus in a month or so.”

“Really? Are there any good ones?”

“There’s a kid named Khan who’s a trainee in the program. I thought I was seeing you.”

“Khan…… And what did he do?”

“Oh, he’s testing my artifacts with me, and as soon as they’re safe, they’ll be distributed to Cerberus.”

Redin smirked at Heather’s now air of authority.

“The old crybaby is completely gone, huh?”

“Who’s that guy?”

After chatting with Heather for a while, it was time for another mission and so he pushes himself away from the wall.

Then Heather clapped his hands.

“Ahh!, Hang on.”

Heather walked over to a storage shelf and pulled something out. Taking a small box, he opened the lid in front of him.

A bunch of black beads.

He had ordered them in a rush from Heather the moment he learned what Brown Bear would be doing next.

“I know it was a rush job… but it should work.”

“Yeah? I’ll put it to good use.”

He took the black beads and stashed them away.

After saying goodbye to Heather, he leaves the Special Education Center and takes a boat to Brule Harbor.

*Pooh-Pooh!* *Pooh-Pooh!*

The long boat arrived at the port of Brule, and when he stepped on the land, his team members walked out of the warehouse as soon as they heard the sound of the boat arriving.

Seria, Hugo, and Adela.

They were well-rested, and their faces showed no signs of fatigue. Rather, there was a clear determination to carry out this mission.

“Everyone, double check your gears, make sure you haven’t forgotten anything.”

“Yes.”

After the equipment check, the mission briefing began.

“The mission is to apprehend Brown Bear, who is voluntarily turning himself in. The rendezvous point is the border area between the Kingdom of Ravino and the Kingdom of Crane. Contact time is one hour from now.”

Thus ends the mission outline.

“If you have any questions about this mission, feel free to ask.”

Adela raised her hand.

“I don’t understand the sudden desire to turn himself in at this time of year. Isn’t this a ploy to draw us in?”

“Why would he want to draw us in?”

“Because he’s been relentless in his pursuit. I’m guessing he wants to wrap things up quickly and focus on Pierre and Hekan.”

He nodded.

It was something to consider.

“Okay. That’s possible, but does it make any difference whether or not Brown Bear’s surrender is fake?”

“…….”

“What’s important to us isn’t whether Brown Bear’s voluntary surrender is real or not. What’s important is that we get to see him face to face.”

“…….”

“Catching Brown Bear shouldn’t be too hard with our skills, right? It’s finding him that’s hard.”

Adela nodded.

Next to her, Hugo raised his hand.

“I’m curious about something, too.”

“Tell me.”

“Pierre and Hekan are targeting Magnes, and they could show up in our area of contact, right?”

“That’s right.”

“Then no matter how strong we are, it’s dangerous to be outnumbered, isn’t it?”

“That’s why I’ve prepared something.”

He opened the box Heather had handed him, and handed out the black beads to the group. Hugo held up the bead and scratched his head.

“What is this?”

“It’s a device that dissipates mana in a three-meter radius around the user. With it, you should be able to deal with enemies even if you’re outnumbered.”

“How far does it go?”

“Expert Intermediate. It should be able to destroy up to 5th Circle Magic.”

If they continue the study.

Heather said it would take a long time to get to Advanced and even 6th Circle Magic.

“If I use this incorrectly, won’t it also affect my allies’ mana?”

“It doesn’t apply to those who carry the bead, so feel free to use it.”

“That’s amazing.”

“Anyone else have any questions?”

He glanced at Seria, who hadn’t asked a question, who shook her head to indicate that she didn’t have any.

“Let’s get going, then.”

They walked out of the warehouse and over to the teleporter. After telling the staff the location, she activated the teleporter.

*Whoosh!*

A bright flash of light and a shift in visual field.

He pulled the [Watcher’s Eye] from his pouch and scanned the area for possible enemies.

The ones in the village appeared to be Magnes, and the ones farther away, in the distance, appeared to be Pierre and Hekan.

As expected, they were on standby.

He designated Pierre and Hekan using the Watcher’s Eye. Once done, he retracted the Watcher’s Eye and looked around.

A village in ruins.

The village of Poola, where Brown Bear and Fire Ant had met before. He didn’t know why he’d asked to see them here.

“Let’s move.”

Leading the group inside the village. As they passed the collapsed houses, they came upon a building with an intact exterior.

In front of it, he saw members of the Magnes organization.

A group of men with their own name in the organization led by Brown Bear.

He approached them and spoke.

“Where is Brown Bear?”

“Is he your friend?”

“Can we just pretend what happened today never happened?”

The gang member flinched and bit his lip.

“Get in here.”

He entered the building, where the facade was in good shape, to find a neatly decorated interior.

There were plush sofas and a large table lined with drugs, cigarettes, and all manner of fine liquor.

Brown Bear was sitting on the couch, smoking a cigarette and drinking.

Walking over, he sat down across from him.

Blowing out a puff of white smoke, he gestured to the drinks with his hand and raised the corner of his mouth.

“What do you want to drink?”

“Forget the drink. Can we get straight to the point?”

“Don’t we have a while longer before our appointed time?”

“Yes, but I was given a piece of information before I came here.”

“Information?”

“That Pierre and Hekan are targeting this place.”

*Shatter!*

The flask in the Brown Bear’s hand was shattered.

Blood and liquor flowed down the Brown Bear’s hand.

“Son of a…….”

“I’d like to finish this before the rest of those people get here.”

“The terms of the deal are simple. You will keep me safe until I am imprisoned in Burning Hell.”

“I promise you with my name and rank.”

“Very well.”

Brown Bear held out his arms compliantly.

Standing up, he pulled out a pair of handcuffs and slipped them on his arms.

With a snap!

He led the unresisting brown bear out of the building. He looked at his team, who remained silent, and gave them their orders.

“Arrest the others.”

“Understood.”

Silently, he approached the handcuffed men, touching their shoulders one by one and checking their respective status panels.

He didn’t tell them.

There was a big variable in this mission.

Himus von Oberg.

Whether or not he was actually here would determine the course of the mission.

“Sir, I’ll contact the special transport.”

Nodding at Hugo’s words, he checked the rest of the organization’s status.

There was no indication of Himus’ presence.

It was expected so he wasn’t surprised. There were only two options anyway.

Bring Himus back for real.

Or pretending he was here.

If he really was present, he could use it to drive Brown Bear back to the station, but since he was just a smoke screen.

He simply moved on to the next plan.

“Brown Bear, it seems like things are going to get complicated, don’t you think?”

“What do you mean?”

“You have a spy in your midst?”

Not an owl, the symbol of Magnes, but rather a clown dancing, the symbol for Pierre.

He decapitated the guy.

*Thud!*

At that moment, the designated figures in the Watcher’s Eye began to move.

“Everyone, prepare for battle, the enemy is coming.”

“Yes!”

As the group scrambled to respond, Brown Bear approached him, still handcuffed.

“Take the cuffs off, we’ll fight too.”

He smirked.

“I have a special talent.”

“What? All of a sudden it’s….”

“I killed that guy and got a piece of information. Turns out he was targeting you to find the descendant of the Oberg Empire.”

“……!”

Brown Bear’s eyes widened in surprise. He was so shocked that he stared blankly at Redin with his mouth open.

He drew his sword and plunged it into the heart of a nearby gang member.

*Squelch!*

“Kuekk!”

A member with white eyes collapsed. Brown Bear shuddered as he watched.

“This isn’t him, is it?”

He killed the one next to him.

As he did so, he watched Brown Bear’s reaction.

“St… op.”

“Judging by your reaction, this isn’t him.”

Without hesitation, he swung his sword.

These guys were committing crimes and engaging in other evil deeds. He had no qualms about killing them.

As he held the blade to the throat of the last remaining member of the gang, Brown Bear gritted his teeth and shouted.

“Stop!”

“You have no spirit in your voice, huh?”

*Slash!*

Wiping the blood from his sword, he stepped in front of Brown Bear and leaned down.

“At this rate, I’m guessing the descendant is staying near the side of Caius.”

“This… son of a…..”

“I’m sure you have a lot of questions you want to ask, so I’ll give you some time to process.”

He stood up and looked ahead.

Several enemies were running at them, each carrying a weapon. Clown symbols on their shoulders, necks, and arms.

They were members of Pierre’s Organization.

At least a hundred of them.

Clutching the black orb he’d prepared in his left hand and his sword in his right, he charged at them, giving orders to his group.

“Take them all out!”

He plowed into their midst and pressed the button on the black bead.

*Ooooohhhh!!*

*Pow!*

A small wave rippled around him.

“Huh?”

“What the……!”

Approaching the flustered enemies, he slit their throats. It didn’t take much effort to deal with the mana drained enemies.

“Ugh!”

“Re… treat!”

“Everyone fall back!”

With the shout of the group’s leader, the members of Pierre’s organization turned and began to flee.

Following suit, he cleaned up behind them and shouted to his team.

“Enough, we’re going back too.”

“You’re letting them get away like that?”

“Yes. Leave the fleeing ones behind, and see if you can find anything useful among the dead.”

He walked over and stopped in front of Brown Bear.

His face was bright red and completely enraged.

“You son of a……!”

He leapt to his feet, sidestepping the lunging brown bear and stomping on his head.

“What do you think those guys over there are going to do when they see this? If I were them, I’d throw the whole force at Caius, knowing that you lack their target.”

“….. Grrrrr”

“How about we make a deal?”

“…..”

“If you tell me where Caius is, I’ll take these cuffs off and let you go back to him.”

Brown Bear was silent.

He could see he was conflicted.

“Rather than be arrested alone like this, shouldn’t you give me the information and make a last stand?”
