Chapter 53: Eto Reveals Her True Feelings
Arima had already discerned that the petite figure in the black cloak before him was likely the One-Eyed Owl, which was why he refrained from making any rash moves earlier.
Noticing the Owl preparing to enter kakuja form, Byakuya and Arima, with impressive coordination, simultaneously opened their quinque briefcases.
Byakuya wielded Moonshadow and Wind Spirit in his hands.
Not only that, he immediately allocated his attribute points.
[Current Attribute Points: 248]
[Ding! Attribute points allocated successfully!]
[Physical Strength +100]
[RC Cell Count +148]
The points accumulated from completing system quest and daily check-ins were all used up in one go.
As always, Byakuya focused primarily on enhancing RC Cells, with Physical Strength as a secondary priority.
[Physical Strength: 40]
[RC Cell Count: 821]
After the upgrade, Byakuya's physical strength reached four times that of an average human, but his RC Cell count was nearing the 'threshold'.
The so-called 'threshold' referred to the point where one's RC Cell count approached that of a ghoul's. If it surpassed the threshold, he would lose the ability to consume normal food.
Byakuya resolved to save attribute points in the future to purchase an "RC Cell Reservoir" ensuring he wouldn't face dietary issues later.
At the same time, Arima, confronting a formidable enemy, wielding two Yukimura 1/3 quinques.
Eto deemed Byakuya the greater threat and aimed to quickly eliminate the blue-haired man first, planning to focus on Byakuya afterward.
Her initial target was Arima.
However, Arima easily evaded her attack and countered by slashing at the One-Eyed Owl's kagune arms with his quinque.
When dealing with kakuja-form ghouls like the Owl, whether it was the One-Eyed Owl or the Non-Killing Owl, Byakuya and Arima's strategy remained the same. The kagune arms, combining offense, defense, and speed, were the most critical targets to neutralize first.
Given that Yukimura was a B rated quinque, its damage was limited, and Arima couldn't sever the kagune arm in one strike.
However, Byakuya swiftly followed up, using dual-wield techniques to deliver significant damage to the Owl's arm.
"Screeeech!"
The kagune arm was severed at the elbow.
But this injury wasn't fatal; the kagune regenerated quickly from the shoulder's kakuhou.
Eto realized that the blue-haired man was just as strong as the lolicon investigator she previously despised.
Facing these two simultaneously, she felt unprecedented pressure.
Still, with the other Aogiri Tree members not yet fully evacuated, she had no choice but to hold her ground.
Byakuya, with two prior battles against the Owl — one against Eto and the other against Kuzen — found the experience invaluable. Father and daughter shared nearly identical kakuja forms and combat styles, making this fight much more manageable for him.
He soon precisely struck and damaged the kakuhou on the right arm.
Immediately after, Arima damaged the left arm's kakuhou.
Both kagune arms hung limp, barely attached and rendered nearly useless.
At their current strength, either Byakuya or Arima alone could defeat the One-Eyed Owl. Together, their victory was swift and inevitable.
Byakuya didn't stop there. Using his quinques, he broke through the kakuja's armor with precision, extracting Eto from its core.
Realizing her defeat, Eto abandoned her usual coy and gentle demeanor. Instead, she displayed a wry smile, speaking playfully:
"So? Surprised, Mr Byakuya~?"
Even in her final moments, she couldn't resist teasing the lolicon investigator.
"Yeah, it's... quite the surprise"
Byakuya's expression remained calm, his tone indifferent.
Arima, who had initially intended to deliver the finishing blow, paused when he noticed a peculiar familiarity between Byakuya and the One-Eyed Owl. He decided to observe silently.
Seeing Byakuya's lack of reaction, Eto's playful interest faded.
She suddenly realized his earlier sweet words had been lies. Whether or not he found her 'cute' were meaningless.
Even after discovering her identity as the "One-Eyed Owl," he could still kill her without hesitation.
"You're just a deceitful investigator. Go ahead and kill me. That way, you'll get your promotion to Special Class."
Eto, resigned to her fate, sought a quick death at Byakuya's hands.
Escaping was impossible, and death seemed far preferable to imprisonment in Cochlea.
Her ideals had barely begun, yet they would end here. At least her father would be spared further danger as the CCG's pursuit of the One-Eyed Owl would cease with her death.
Still, she felt no regret for her rebellion against the Washuu Clan and the V.
"Before you die, is there anything you'd like to say?"
Byakuya asked indifferently.
"Let me think... I guess I regret not realizing my ideals" Eto replied with a self-deprecating smile.
"What ideals?"
"To change this broken world, of course" she answered with a bitter laugh. "Though it seems ridiculous now — dreaming big with such meager strength..."
"Is that so? I think it's admirable"
Byakuya had been waiting for this moment. As long as Eto confessed her true thoughts, with Arima as a witness, his goal was achieved.
"What about you, Arima? What do you think?"
Byakuya asked casually.
Arima's eyes flickered briefly, and for the first time, a faint smile appeared on his face.
"I think it's admirable as well" he replied.
