Chapter 54: Liar
Byakuya, Eto, and Arima all shared similar ideals — to change the world —so they quickly reached a consensus.
Hearing Byakuya and Arima's conversation, Eto opened her eyes in confusion.
"What are you talking about...?"
"I'll explain it all to you once we get back. For now, focus on taking care of your organization's matters" Byakuya replied, avoiding an immediate explanation.
He was aware that if they delayed further, the V might send someone to monitor the situation.
Before this, he had carefully surveyed the surroundings and confirmed that there were no members from V nearby for the time being. His confidence in the perceptive power of his mangekyo sharingan was absolute.
Thus, he aimed to ensure Eto and the members of the Aogiri Tree evacuate before V discovered them.
Eto froze for a moment, finding Byakuya increasingly enigmatic. In her mind, he remained a bastard, a liar, and an inscrutable lolicon.
Then, a sly smile formed at the corners of her mouth as she spread her arms toward Byakuya.
"...What's this?"
Byakuya was momentarily puzzled, unsure of what Eto was trying to do.
"Isn't it obvious? Carry me out of here. I'm too weak to move on my own" Eto said without hesitation.
"…..."
Byakuya could instantly tell she still had plenty of strength left.
After all, he and Arima had only disabled her kagune's arms, leaving her main body unscathed.
Nonetheless, he didn't refuse her request. Reaching out, he lifted Eto from her kakuja's shell.
As he held her, Eto leaned close to his ear and murmured in a teasing tone, "Even if you're a liar, you really are a lolicon~."
"And where am I a liar?" Uchiha Byakuya retorted immediately.
Eto smirked but didn't clarify. "A liar is a liar"
Nearby, Arima watched the exchange between Byakuya and Eto with an impassive expression, remaining silent throughout.
After a moment, Byakuya set Eto down.
She landed softly and reabsorbed her kakuja's shell, ensuring no traces were left at the scene.
[Ding! The host has defeated the SSS rated ghoul One-Eyed Owl and earned: 200 attribute points.]
Byakuya immediately reaped a significant reward of attribute points. Notably, the One-Eyed Owl was still rated as SSS rather than SSS+ — a level she would only reach in the events of the original timeline.
As for Furuta from the late stages of the original series, his power had far surpassed the SSS+ rated.
With their mission complete, Byakuya and Arima prepared to leave, stowing their quinques back into their briefcases.
"See you tonight" Byakuya said to Eto before departing.
"Hmm…" She murmured, watching his retreating figure, momentarily lost in thought.
Even now, she couldn't fathom just how many secrets this enigmatic, infuriating liar and lolicon was hiding.
Something about him felt… off. He wasn't an ordinary human, nor a typical ghoul investigator.
And the blue-haired guy who appeared today only deepened her suspicions.
He seemed to be Byakuya's partner, and the combined strength of the two far exceeded that of CCG's Special-Class Investigators — clearly abnormal.
Eto speculated that they were likely both half-humans and possibly even members of the V Organization.
Based on her parents' experiences and the notes her mother had left behind, Eto inferred that nearly every member of the V possessed strength equivalent to a Special-Class Investigator. Byakuya and the blue-haired man were likely elites among them. This explanation seemed plausible.
But speculation was futile for now. Tonight, she would wait to see what that bastard, liar lolicon had to say…
...
Sunlit Garden
In a certain courtyard, Kaiko asked, "Byakuya, Arima, how did it go?"
Byakuya shook his head slightly. "We were a step too late. By the time we arrived, the One-Eyed Owl and her organization had already relocated"
"Is that so? What a pity" Kaiko said, showing no sign of suspicion when Arima didn't refute Byakuya's report.
Kaiko trusted Kishou deeply, even if Byakuya was unreliable, Arima certainly wasn't.
"We'll shelve this matter for now. Once we locate the organization again, we'll proceed" Kaiko said. "I'll inform you if there are any new assignments"
Byakuya and Arima both nodded slightly before leaving.
...
On their way back to the 2nd Ward, Byakuya and Arima began to converse.
"What's your plan, Byakuya?" Arima suddenly asked, his question clearly referencing how to realize Eto's goal of changing the world.
"First, we have to topple the Washuu Clan. Only then can we proceed with the rest of the plan" Byakuya stated decisively.
The Washuu Clan, creators of the CCG, were secretly ghouls themselves — a fact known only to a select few.
Their goal was to maintain a balance where neither humans nor ghouls became too dominant. Any ghoul who grew too strong would be "swept away" by the V, which the Washuu Clan had established for this purpose.
From their perspective, ordinary ghouls were of no consequence.
The existence of the Washuu Clan was precisely why Eto described the world as utterly flawed.
Overthrowing them was a necessary step.
For instance, developing food substitutes for ghouls had been possible for a long time, but the Washuu Clan consistently sabotaged such research.
If peace between humans and ghouls were achieved, the CCG's purpose would diminish, and so would the Washuu Clan's control over Japan — something they couldn't allow.
This was why, in the original timeline, once the Washuu Clan was eradicated, substitutes for human flesh were quickly developed.
"But it won't be easy, especially given our short lifespans…" Arima expressed doubt.
Not only was the Washuu Clan a formidable obstacle, but the entire V would also be a significant challenge.
In contrast, Byakuya exuded unwavering confidence.
"Don't worry. We'll win" he said assuredly.
