Chapter 1: The Death of Justice
Adam's polished badge glinted under the harsh streetlight as he adjusted his holster. He was a righteous cop in a decaying department, a beacon of integrity surrounded by shadows. For years, he had turned a blind eye to the corruption festering in the precinct, focusing on his job while ignoring the moral decay. But tonight, everything was supposed to change.
The anonymous tip he'd received promised to expose the rot at its core—a clandestine meeting between dirty officers and a powerful drug cartel. Adam had been warned that digging too deep would only lead to trouble, but the weight of his badge compelled him forward. Justice had to prevail, no matter the cost.
The alley was darker than he expected, an oppressive void illuminated only by the faint hum of a distant streetlamp. His instincts prickled, and his hand brushed the handle of his gun. Something wasn't right.
"Captain Monroe?" he called out, his voice firm and steady. The echo of his words disappeared into the night.
A shadow emerged from behind a dumpster, followed by two more. Adam's stomach sank as the figures stepped into the dim light. His breath caught in his throat. It wasn't the cartel. It was his own team.
"Adam," Captain Monroe said, his tone laced with feigned regret. "You couldn't leave it alone, could you?"
"What the hell is this?" Adam demanded, his hand tightening on his weapon.
"You were digging too deep," said Officer Carmichael, smirking as he leveled his gun at Adam. "You think you're some kind of hero? You're just making it harder for the rest of us."
Adam's heart pounded as he took a step back, his mind racing. These were men he had trusted, men he had shared drinks with after long shifts. The betrayal cut deeper than he could have imagined.
"This isn't justice," Adam growled, his voice trembling with rage.
Monroe sighed, raising his weapon. "It's survival."
The first shot echoed in the alley, followed by another. The bullets tore through Adam's chest, knocking him to the ground. Pain exploded through his body, his breath hitching as blood pooled beneath him. His vision blurred as the world faded to shadows.
As he lay there, choking on his own blood, a single thought consumed him: This isn't how it ends. This can't be how it ends.
The darkness closed in, but deep within that void, something stirred.
